Re:Ask HN: What's a Purchase You Regret? on Saturday November 08, 2025 @09:02PM (#45862247)
iPad Pro M1. I use it rarely. Anything I can’t do on my phone I use my MacBook or pc. Consuming media is better on my laptop display, and easier to type/navigate. It just doesn’t really serve a purpose.
Yes, the battery needs coding to tell the car about its capacity, battery type, etc. to optimize the charging. Fortunately coding modules is not completely locked behind dealer-only tools (see VCDS https://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/VCDS.php), but it is very inconvenient for the non-enthusiast who probably doesn't want to spend $200 on a tool to code their battery.
Take Volkswagen vehicles (VW/Audi, mainly). Nearly every electronic module in the car that you'd want to replace has component protection, making it literally impossible for a non-dealer to replace it since you need access to VAG servers to get the token to code the module for the car VIN. I had this experience recently with a CAN bus controller module that just randomly failed. $3k at the dealer. I would have preferred to do it myself but there is no way.
Re:Ask HN: Software Engineer Minimum Wage on Thursday December 05, 2024 @01:41PM (#42331108)
Yes, I was mistaken. Instead, it seems to be referring to a salary or hourly threshold specifically for overtime exemption.
Re:Ask HN: Software Engineer Minimum Wage on Thursday December 05, 2024 @01:40PM (#42331096)
Thank you for the response, I was missing important context. I came across this scrolling through the WAC page. I found a few articles that clear it up as well:

"Effective January 1, 2025, exempt computer professionals paid at an hourly rate must be paid at least $58.31 per hour in order to be exempt." [0]

"...or $58.31 per hour and be exempt from overtime pay." [1]

Ask HN: Software Engineer Minimum Wage

I'm a salaried software engineering employed in Washington state. I make a bit under $100k. Today I learned about minimum wage laws in WA state for computing professionals that would give me a raise of $15k - $20k / yr. Question is - how do I bring it up to my employer, and is it as straightforward as it sounds here?WAC 296-128-535 states that:"Beginning January 1, 2022, and each following...

I could get behind that type of short, clear legalese.
Re:New data shows walking down 36% in USA since 2019 on Thursday January 11, 2024 @12:05AM (#38947919)
A big thing that concerns me is the absurd levels of tint people are putting on their windows.

I bought a used car last year that came with 20% all around, and I removed it from the front windows almost immediately. It was so insanely hard to see outside at night properly, especially in dim or unlit areas. How do people with less than that see? I guess they don’t.

Re:Ask HN: Do high refresh rate monitors make it hard to go back? on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @05:01PM (#37681239)
It doesn't bother me in my case since it's not my main monitor. I have a high refresh rate main monitor, and an ancient 60hz (1680x1050) second monitor. I don't notice it because I'm rarely dragging windows around on the second monitor.

I don't notice it on my phone either. However, I purposely got a high refresh rate laptop because of this concern. I think it depends on two things: The size of the screen, and how often you'll be looking at it.

Re:Ask HN: Is cell phone radiation still a concern in 2023? on Thursday September 14, 2023 @05:14PM (#37514944)
I sleep with my phone under my pillow. I should probably stop.
Re:Ask HN: Would love a physical job, any ideas? on Thursday August 31, 2023 @06:39PM (#37344536)
I'm a bit younger than you, but I have had a similar realization. I love programming, but sitting around all day at a desk does not seem fun for the next several decades, and really doesn't do my social/mental health much good, despite the amount of money.

So, I'm working to become a pilot instead. It's expensive, time consuming, competitive, and probably won't see six figures for half a decade or more. But, it's a heck of a lot more meaningful than sitting at my desk all day.

Just thought I'd share my situation and solution since it's relatively similar. All the best.

Re:Ask HN: Alternative Jira UIs? on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @05:56PM (#37154417)
Work used to use Jira. Then switched to Linear. Now they recently moved back to Jira. I'm thinking about leaving.
Re:Human Shader on Thursday July 20, 2023 @03:46PM (#36805768)
All of the pixels were already taken by the time I tried, but I did an "error" pixel (11, 26) just for my own pleasure.

Somehow I got RGB(255, 50, 194), which is different from the value posted on the chart. Actually, I'm not sure how originally they got 0, since G comes from R and B, which are both positive, and the expression is multiplication and addition.

Re:MacBook Air vs. pro for development work on Wednesday July 19, 2023 @09:22PM (#36795815)
I don't have this many windows open constantly, but I can say that I do a lot of C & C++ stuff with VSCode and my M1 MBP 14 has absolutely zero trouble keeping up. In fact, I often think I should have just got the Air. I'm pretty sure the fan doesn't exist (okay, I know it does, but it is seriously quiet: you should never hear it unless running something super intensive).

What ultimately swayed me towards the MBP was the SD port (I do a bit of hobby photography on the side, this is very useful), the HDMI port, and...the display. It's a fantastic display. Ever since going high refresh rate on my desktop PC, I feel like I can't go back. It's an absolutely wonderful experience.

Re:Ask HN: Has your Twitter feed gotten worse? on Wednesday July 19, 2023 @12:05AM (#36782007)
Interesting observation: I deleted my Twitter account, but created one again recently. Turns out, I was better off without it, so I only login a few times a month to see content from a few people I get a lot of value from. All it shows me in the recommended section is right-wing accounts?? The only accounts I look at are pretty darn far from anything political. My guess is that pushing political stuff drives up view numbers? Not completely sure.

I’ll probably delete it for good soon. It was a lot easier to separate myself from the platform than I thought.

Re:Couples with Joint Checking Accounts Are Happier on Tuesday July 18, 2023 @03:00AM (#36768841)
My rationale is that prenups are an acknowledgment that sometimes, people discover things don’t work out. Agreeing what each person has from the beginning confirms the commitment of marriage is beyond the money/wealth that existed before.

I’ve never been married yet but this perspective seems rare. So many people’s lives get destroyed or seriously damaged after a bad divorce. Why not do something that would ease the pain for both parties?

Re:C++23: The Next C++ Standard on Tuesday July 11, 2023 @07:38PM (#36688628)
C++ 17 is the sweet spot for me. It has most of C++ 11/14, with many new features I use a ton: constexpr, <charconv>, <string_view>, [[maybe_unused]], new SFINAE feature (if constexpr), and more. (And this was considered a small release!?)

I guess I’m just right at home and therefore a bit reluctant to jump into C++20. That and the constantly changing “””correct way of doing things.”””

Side note, but Silo is one of my favorite shows in a long time. Up there with Severance. Watch it if you haven’t.

I actually bought the first book, Wool, because I liked it so much.

Re:U.S. pedestrian deaths reach a 40-year high on Monday June 26, 2023 @11:04AM (#36480530)
The merging and the lane etiquette are the two biggest for me, though I do a lot more driving now than a few years ago. People going below the speed limit in the leftmost lanes regularly back up the freeway since no one can pass. Also is way more dangerous since some weave in the middle lanes (or right) to make the pass.
I was wondering about that. What would be the proper way of doing it? Perhaps glue…but then you have the screws that hold on the titanium caps. Maybe carbon fiber in general wasn’t a good choice.

Edit: Actually I’m wrong. The hatch is bolted on to a titanium ring, which is glued to the carbon fiber body. So no hatch screws in the carbon fiber. [0]

Re:The planning of U.S. physician shortages (2020) on Saturday June 03, 2023 @12:41AM (#36173779)
I wanted to become a doctor. But I also wanted to study engineering. I didn’t want to do some relatively useless degree path like biology simply to fill all the required prerequisites for med school. And then I learned about all of this other stuff, like the MCAT, and how you essentially get abused during residency. I don’t think I’d be able to function on the sleep you’d get anyways.

It shouldn’t be easy to become a doctor, but man the bar right now is so high.

But why now and not a few years ago? The spike appears to have started at the beginning of this year which is most intriguing to me.
I have an Audi from ~2017. Then, a few years ago, the 3G network was shut down in the US. Can't use the app to unlock the doors or check the car status. I think I prefer it like that. Interestingly, on the center console screen, it shows an LTE connection - must be for something else? Then why isn't the unlock/lock function over LTE? Who knows.
These are features on most of the mid to high end Audis.

In Canada, I believe you can only use Mastercard at Costco, interestingly.
Re:Hyundai Promises to Keep Buttons in Cars on Tuesday March 21, 2023 @09:13PM (#35255346)
I'm somewhat interested in older cars, but a big deterrent for me has been safety. I guess this is just a risk in driving an older car. A lot of my driving is on the highway going 70+ MPH, so I suppose if my commute consisted of roads with half the speed limit or less then it'd be more of a consideration.
Re:Hyundai Promises to Keep Buttons in Cars on Tuesday March 21, 2023 @09:06PM (#35255289)
Agreed. Interestingly, only on higher end vehicles have I seen more appealing/simpler steering wheels (Audi, in my experience).
Re:Ask HN: Why Hacker News? on Wednesday March 01, 2023 @12:01AM (#34978959)
Some dislike the site design. It's one of my favorites though. It's just...different from most other places on the internet nowadays. I think it compliments the type of community/content here, too.
Re:Ask HN: So what IS the end game for any WW3 scenario? on Tuesday February 21, 2023 @06:06PM (#34889020)
Me too. While I have some doubts, I also think that the US is not unprepared for a scenario where nukes are flying. I think Russia is still a significant threat, but also that the US has, given their budget, developed/implemented technology the public doesn't even know about to counter this possibility. In fact, I would be beyond shocked if the US hasn't developed anything like that.

I certainly would like to not be in a scenario where the public finds out about possible technology like this, because it would probably mean war has already broken out.
