Re:A Brief History of Cyrix on Saturday November 09, 2024 @12:37AM (#42092718)
I owe my entire career to the high school internship I had in the IT department at Cyrix in Richardson, circa 1996. It was awesome. Learned everything about building PCs for employees and Windows networking. So much free hardware walked out the door -- usually stuff that was slightly out of date, just stacks of it everywhere. Spent the next three summers there through college too. It was really exciting there at that time, Internet age just taking off. They had beer at 4PM on Fridays out back.

Everything went downhill with the series of acquisitions. Anyway, I'm grateful for my time there... I can trace where I am now directly back to the guy who first gave me a chance there.

cool name i've never seen before... currently struggling to come with a new baby girl name. might bring this one up. :)

oh good, it's not just me and my already bad first day of the year... is it too early to start drinking?
Re:Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com on Thursday September 17, 2020 @10:41PM (#24512422)
Moved all my domains and many of my friends' domains to namecheap a few years back. I'm always impressed by how quick and informed customer support is whenever I have an issue. Good job, guys.
top notch original photography in that article.
Re:Trump gives Microsoft 45 days to clinch TikTok deal on Monday August 03, 2020 @10:18AM (#24038046)
How badly will Microsoft fuck this up once the deal is closed? I can't imagine they're going to be able to successfully make this app secure.
As a small time musician with about 20 albums in as many years up on the streaming services, I am 100% fine with this trade-off. I get basically nothing, but in return I can share my musically instantly with anyone. It's pretty awesome really. It would suck to have to make a living off music or art.

I'm still uncertain how I'm supposed to lead twins through online Kindergarten and write software all day. They can't even fucking use scissors without my help.

I just finished watching Fargo Season 2 last night... the massacre at Sioux Falls. :)
Re:Show HN: SheetUI – Turn Google Sheets into Web Pages on Tuesday July 07, 2020 @01:15PM (#23761453)
very nice... curious if you could embed it easily into another site or even wordpress page? I have had an HOA membership page that is backed by a Google Spreadsheet with some crap Sheets plugin that's always having trouble.
I'm really tempted here. I've got a paid Ableton license, and I absolutely love Ableton, but it's the main thing keeping me from dumping Windows 10 for Linux.
Re:I Spent $6M on Google Ads Last Year on Monday April 27, 2020 @02:18PM (#22998408)
Guess you haven't seen Mad Men? It's Don Draper's department name. They say it all time referring to the team who creates the ad ideas.
Just looked it up and we're only in the top 50 (insert crying smiley).
it was acute gut-wreching pain that we weren't sure what to do about, didn't know if it was going to get worse... we should have gone to an "urgent care" clinic, which was our mistake.
i work for a tech company in the fortune 500 top 25... i would assume the best insurance possible, still killing us (paid nearly $7000 out of pocket last year + the actual premium costs of several thousand more). i've got three small kids including one with a heart condition, so it's particularly bad right now.
there's a line item in the bill of $750 for "1mL iodine"
We decided (slash "made the mistake") of going to the emergency room last summer. Spent less than two hours in an exam room before being dismissed with no conclusion and referral to another doctor. Got a $9500 bill about six months later and have been billed a 10% copay on that (insurance paid $5500 already at their negotiated rate). Still fighting it as absolutely absurd, but there's really no hope. This country is fucked. It's an embarrassment.

It's possibly the only piece of software I look forward to using. Everything is right about it. I'm currently remastering a bunch of old albums for digital distribution, so I've been using it a ton. I don't know why every UI isn't required by law to have drag up/down to mean zoom on a timeline/scrollbar type control.
Re:Key takeaways from the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin on Wednesday October 02, 2019 @11:54AM (#21137818)
I've read it (for free). It's really fun to read. He's very funny and it's just generally fascinating to read such modern-seeming genius from so long ago.
Re:The Growth of Hypercasual Games on Tuesday April 02, 2019 @10:25AM (#19554368)
I read the whole article and could not figure out what "hypercAUsal" meant or why they didn't explain it... just realized from your comment it's "hypercasual".

I think it's a palladium arc reactor, designed by group leader Wendelin "Tony" Stark.

I don't really play games at all, but I've had Factorio bookmarked for a while, thinking I wanted to try it. Think you've just convinced me.
My kids get to learn about living with HIV almost every time we watch Peppa Pig with a 3+ minute long commercial of monologues with people suffering from HIV. Also one time we got an American conservative extremist group video ad railing against transgender rights. And violent video game ads all the time.

I signed up for YouTube Red for a free month of no commercials and it was great. I'm wondering if maybe YouTube is doing this to nudge parents into signing up for their premium service to avoids disturbing ads during kid viewing time. $10/month really isn't that bad and I'm considering just having it part my monthly digital fee schedule.

> easy to give false reports which then leads to regular overwork in the days just before a hard deadline.

Working from home for three years now as a software project contributor, this is my biggest problem. I always get my shit done, but it gets majorly stressful since daily family life goes on the same regardless of my self-inflicted work crunches. Pretty sure the tradeoffs are still worth it, though.

What is this magic?? I feel like I'm sane again reading Facebook like that. Just replaced my bookmark. If it could display in reverse chronological order, then Facebook would be totally fixed.
