I haven’t made a case either for or against crypto either way in this thread, except to state that I have some crypto.

There might be value in a discussion that asks for disclosure. I’m not sure this discussion is working as intended though, judging the amounts of disclosures in the comments. Just an observation.

We’re not journalists. We’re discussing a subject on a message board.

Besides, my original position was that it was bad form to ask for the exact amount of crypto someone holds.

I don’t ask for the exact amount of stock someone holds in Tesla when they are talking about how great Tesla is.

People who talk in a National Assembly have real influence on laws so conflict of interest is a real problem.

If the chair of the SEC comes out for or against crypto (or any financial product) of course we should know what investments he holds.

We’re arguing about a subject on a message board. It’s not going to have any influence whatsoever on the price or whether it fails or not.

I would hate to have to disclose the exact amount of Toyota stock I own anytime I argue with someone the merits of Toyota over Ford or Honda.

There is no element of FOMO or being proven wrong when talking about slavery or drugs.

When someone comes out against crypto and I find out they have just sold their stake, that seems really suspect to me.

Re:Cryptocurrency Is an Abject Disaster on Monday April 26, 2021 @12:33PM (#26944515)
Imagine a world where you can’t argue about anything without disclosing the exact amount of stake you have in it.

Skin in the game works both ways. FOMO is a real thing.

Re:Cryptocurrency Is an Abject Disaster on Monday April 26, 2021 @12:25PM (#26944397)
In that same vein, I assume that anyone who comes out against crypto has little or no stake in it. And I’m usually correct.
Re:Cryptocurrency Is an Abject Disaster on Monday April 26, 2021 @12:17PM (#26944299)
It seems rather poor form to ask someone to disclose their exact crypto holdings for the sake of legitimizing, or delegitimizating their position.

Couldn’t it just be a binary yes or no?

Disclosure: I own some crypto.

Maybe with some public accountability they can finally solve the issue of their servers “going down” every time there is a rush to sell.
You’re not the only one. But there are a lot of people whose life situation might dictate that choosing a safe FAANG job beats the risk of working for a startup or striking out on their own. Or maybe they just want to work on interesting things, have a good work life balance, and get paid really well.

Your golden handcuffs might be someone else’s golden parachute.

Re:BTC Endgame on Friday February 19, 2021 @06:24PM (#26199430)
I wonder if at some point Bitcoin might become important enough that nation states will work together to ensure that no one state has more than a 51% hashrate as a matter of national security.
Copyright issues aside, you would think claims of innovation would be taken with a grain of salt until this engine competes with, and beats Stockfish and Leela at the TCEC (top computer engine championship).
Ive found that there are days when I can’t do more than 2 hours without struggling, and some days where 10 hours go by without too much effort. Like you, I probably average 4 hours a day, but I don’t want to artificially limit it if I’m in a groove.

At my old team - in a fairly well known non-Faang software company - we planned sprints assuming 4 productive hours a day, so the 4 hour figure is probably not too extraordinary.

Not to mention the prison-industrial complex in the US.

I was hoping for some payoff, like if it was possible for me to somehow hop over to the elite ladder and ascend to the level of barbarian.

Why would China invade Taiwan when it can just buy all of its engineers?
Not sure what you mean by volcanic magma half life but keep in mind the time dilation effect are minuscule, amounting to 2.5 years out of the 4.5 billion years of the earths age.
Re:Apple does not keep the 30% commission on a refund on Thursday July 30, 2020 @08:10AM (#23997147)
So does Apple keep the 30% or not? It’s too much information for my brain to process.
Re:China's 996 working hour system on Friday June 12, 2020 @01:02PM (#23501253)
Is this phenomenon unique to China? Many of us in my current company are unofficially on a 996 kind of system as we are nearing our release date.
There could be other reasons for disliking it other than not understanding what’s going on. Maybe other people are working on tight deadlines and don’t have the time or mental energy trying to understand an entirely unfamiliar programming paradigm.

I would want to program in functional too, but I would seek out projects or teams that already use functional. I’d never introduce a functional language to an already established team or project, unless of course, I was the CTO and there were clear benefits.
