Google's version of freemium?

I'd love to know the numbers behind this. Anyone have an idea of what Google's Adword visitor LTV is for these sites?

Re:Ask HN: Startup School worth it? on Monday October 07, 2013 @11:18PM (#6512832)
I flew from Australia in 2011 for it and have no regrets. At the time though I was very new to the startup scene.

Like any conference most of the value is derived from the networking rather than the speakers/presentations. Keeping in mind the target market, expect to see a lot of undergrads and startup newbies.

That being said the talks are still amazing and there are some more senior guys that go.

Re:Show HN: BackboneScreencasts.com on Wednesday October 19, 2011 @10:21PM (#3133124)
I'd be interested to see what value this adds compared to the documentation and existing (free) blog posts on it's use. IMHO Backbone's docs are super friendly and if you're really wondering what's going on under the covers the source code is relatively easy to jump into and understand (assuming you're a javascript programmer not a jQuery hacker)
Re:How to seem good at everything: Stop doing stupid shit on Friday August 05, 2011 @06:56AM (#2849678)
Completely agree - when it comes to software you will avoid doing 'stupid stuff' if you actually UNDERSTAND what you are doing.
Re:We mistakenly marked about 50 applications as late on Friday April 08, 2011 @06:08PM (#2425798)
not really a shocking number considering the current state of the industry.

This sounds cool. I would also be quite interested.
Re:What to do with a site that accidentally got popular? on Monday October 04, 2010 @01:53AM (#1754736)
I think this is a very good point. You may find that there is more to be made selling songs/albums/playlists via affiliate channels, or like stated, offering pro features. DJ's may even be using it to trial new vinyls before they buy. If nothing else understanding the use should allow you to better tailor the site to drive up traffic if you do decide to roll out ads.
Re:Ask HN: How worthwhile is Startup School? on Sunday October 03, 2010 @06:47AM (#1752488)
Im just looking at flights now and should be able to have 8 days in town: 13th - 21st. Do you know any events off the top of your head that are on? Something I might start concentrating on once flights are booked.

I am definitely starting to think that it would be worthwhile, mainly for the networking. There are so many talented people in the area and the thought of meeting some of them really excites me.

Now I just hope they'll give me time off work. Somewhat short notice but I think (hope) it'll be okay!

Thanks for the advice.

Ask HN: How worthwhile is Startup School?

Fortunately I was accepted for startup school. As I am based in Australia however it will not be a cheap/quick affair to attend so I am wanting to reassure myself that its a worthwhile expedition. Can those who have been before enlighten me as to what I can expect and whether or not it is worth the trip (approx $3)?My big fear is that I go to find the content is fairly general and a more...

Re:This is the best "we're hiring" image ever drawn on Friday August 20, 2010 @06:33AM (#1620017)
Clever - quirky enough to get to the top of HN, informing (arguably) the best pool of potential employees that they're hiring.
Re:Ask HN: How much is a remote job worth to you? on Wednesday July 28, 2010 @10:13AM (#1554355)
As an alternative - I work site based requiring me on site 15 days at a time, 6 days off. Accommodation and food provided. As a salaried employee I am given a 40% uplift for this. I have heard of cases where this can be as great as 60%. However, the detail is in the numbers - when on site you are usually required to work 12hr days. 50% more hours, 40% more pay. Go figure.
Re:Ask HN: Review my status board startup on Monday July 19, 2010 @09:26AM (#1528549)
What was your motivation for getting it done right from the start, rather than bootstrapping it yourself first for proof of concept/profitability? time constraints?

Obviously you have made some assumptions as to how long profitability will take - something I presume only comes with experience.

Not to over step my mark, but what magnitude of savings is needed to fund this sort of development? I ask this as I have recently started work on my own project, and am curious if my savings are even ballpark to consider outsourcing it.

Re:Ask HN: Review my status board startup on Monday July 19, 2010 @09:07AM (#1528491)
I am not sure if it is possible (as my programming experience is very limited) but an API for this so, rather than continually having to provide support for other services, you outsource the development to the community!
Re:Ask HN: Review my status board startup on Monday July 19, 2010 @08:51AM (#1528451)
Well done on launching! find the bootstrap/outsource combo very interesting - surely this is somewhat of a oxymoron What's your background if you don't mind me asking?

Ask HN: Start-up success as a non-technical?

Do you need the technical skills to succeed or are you better off gaining the complementary skills (marketing, pricing etc) and partnering up with people with the technical skills? Why I ask: I'm a grad. civil eng. who wants to get out of the industry, saving up hard to start my own business/further my education. Would my money be better spent on a MBA or MSCS? I see a Stanford MSCS doesn't...

Re:Ask HN: Any New Zealand HN readers out there? on Saturday May 08, 2010 @07:31AM (#1329989)
Yea I will do - I've been meaning to start one up but at the moment I don't have enough spare time as it is (working 12 hour days and spending all my spare time learning). When I've got something worth writing about I'll let you know.
Re:Ask HN: Any New Zealand HN readers out there? on Saturday May 08, 2010 @07:29AM (#1329983)
This is true - it requires you have a product that is not intrinsically linked to the country you're developing it in. I would imagine something like Groupon.com or foursquare may be hard to get going in NZ. Where in NZ are you thinking of moving? Like squidsoup said, there seems to be quite the community in Wellington.
