we are going to find out very soon
Re:Monte-Carlo Simulations on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:20PM (#50127270)
I wrote a Monte-Carlo simulation while working on a Pokemon-Go style game to simulate people walking all over the world. I used statistics for average walking speed and times played for similar games. To my amazement when the game launched, my predictions were within +/- 2%! A career highlight.
It's not that it's fake. It's that it has a distinct style.

I once thought that AI image/video would quickly become unidentifiable, but the surprising thing (so far) is that every new model release is followed by two reactions: "This is incredible" to "I recognize this style. It's AI. They're all the same."

It takes only a few weeks. I've been amazed with our mind's ability to move the goalpost.

I love my whoop band. Has noticeably made my day to day life happier than before I owned it. The insights pushed me to sleep much better, which makes each day brighter and less overwhelming. The insights also pushed me to up my cardio fitness metrics in general, which has made me overall more athletic and capable on strenuous hikes, trips, and activities.

YMMV but for me it might be my favorite product I own

Re:Biggest dark matter detector spots a single weird particle on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @10:55AM (#49537294)
> it’s far too early to claim a discovery, physicists warn...“How do you even make sense of one event?” muses Tom Shutt, a particle astrophysicist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and co-founder of the LZ project. “We just decided we should publish and think really, really, really hard about what that event could be.”

Very hard to manage jumping the gun by reporters. Sounds like they saw some new data. No idea what it is.

Looking forward to the follow up.

I have claude just label at the top of all the notes it's generated "Generated by Claude". I also put them into specific claude folders. I agree with the downsides of not being able to distinguish your own writing from an AI's in the future, but don't see why it's a unsolvable problem.
I’m not certain that an AI agent itself is going to cure cancer. But I am certain that millions of scientists using AI will make lots of progress.

I guarantee someone at Moderna was using Claude in some capacity.

Re:Being Ambitious and Being a Dad on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @09:43AM (#49361501)
Strauss Zelnick the TakeTwo CEO has talked about how there’s two periods to go hard at your career ambitions: before kids and then after they are older and have their own lives. In between, my frame on this personally has always been that no matter how much money I make in the future, one day I would spend all of it to have another day with my kids at the age they are right now. And so for a period, that’s the focus. It won’t be forever but it is right now.
Re:Ordinary Abundance on Thursday August 13, 2026 @01:35PM (#49289312)
It's true. The negative takeaway is that is no matter what miracles come in the far future (free energy, perfect health care, infinite resources, infinite intelligence), people will eternally be wanting, take things for granted, focused mainly on the things they don't have and can't do. It's the human condition.
The US wields incredible negotiating power and hegemony because the dollar is the world’s reserve currency. Like the British pound and the Dutch guilder before it, if that loses reserve currency status it will be harder to borrow on favorable terms, which would affect the entire US economy. This is a big step in that perhaps starting to happen over the next few decades.
For those old enough to remember, this is like dial up internet to broadband. So fast it creates new markets
Re:Mosh in a Lift (2012) on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @10:52AM (#49169827)
I can't see the lift obviously but in the movies they punch out the ceiling and climb out

Don't give up, friend. People care for you. If no one else, this person online does! I hope you are able to find help.
Re:The World's 2,400 Castles on Monday July 27, 2026 @02:27PM (#49073693)
I'll have to look these up! The staff definitely strongly proclaim that Dalhousie is the oldest. I wonder why they omit these
This is incredible. This was the promise of the proclamations of "the metaverse" or interchangeable crypto game items/characters, but is using none of those things. Like Ready Player One come to life without the hype.

Curious how easy the setup is for gamers who are non-engineers

Re:The World's 2,400 Castles on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @12:33PM (#48994627)
We just stayed in Dalhousie Castle, the oldest in Scotland. Very beautiful and well maintained, with lots of spooky history.

If you want to leave a legacy, build something out of stone.

Tim Sweeney’s interviews on the uses of GenAI for game development have been some of the best takes I’ve heard. He’s mentioned how GenAI is great at filling in the gaps or treating assets, but no world simulation means no deep persistence or authoring for a whole new unique game world.

What is the conversation like within Epic now? Is this still the view? What is the future for simulations like this?

I made a hard switch from all digital to all physical (when available) after I tried to introduce old games to my kids. I found many of them were no longer downloadable.

What are the odds that PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox servers will be around in 2040? 2050? It’s certainly not 100%. Those companies may not even exist. If there’s any dependency, there is a chance that one day you won’t have access any more.

Re:Printing Gaussian Splats on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @05:35PM (#48651793)
Incredible. I may be the only one in the dark, but until this moment I had no idea 3D printing at this high a fidelity was possible. It looks like a real bee.

Last I knew, the best 3D prints still looked like hardened play dough

Maybe a dumb question but since 2B2T (as I understand it) is a single instance of everyone modifying it to their heart's content, why does the download look like the standard biomes of a fresh minecraft map?
Re:Brent Crude hits $119.56/barrel peak today on Wednesday April 29, 2026 @07:12PM (#47955919)
I’m going to bookmark this and check back periodically this year to see if I am truly not able to buy milk due to plastic. Interesting prediction.
If you don't like this, physical books are wonderful.

Unpopular here but: This won't bother non-techies who aren't religiously against DRM. They love their kindles, old ones should be thrown away and they will buy a new one (with cool new features like blue light blocking mode).

Re:The Last Quiet Thing on Monday April 06, 2026 @04:32PM (#47666626)
I used to work in the games industry and this is a large split between older games and newer games. Traditional games like Super Mario don't "reach out" through notifications for you to play them more like Roblox. You are in control of the on/off switch
Re:Illinois Introducing Operating System Account Age Bill on Tuesday March 17, 2026 @04:38PM (#47417969)
but how can you remove adult-only features for children only without knowing the age?
Re:Illinois Introducing Operating System Account Age Bill on Tuesday March 17, 2026 @04:22PM (#47417793)
"so full of holes as to be meaningless"

what is the solution then to age gating apps that the public feels should be age gated? (TikTok, Instagram, etc). it seems like every app implementing its own guessing system would have even more holes, right?

this is one where I am sympathetic. the moment when someone, with their parent, is setting up a device seems like the best point to check age. right?

am I missing something?

This is the correct read of this acquisition.
Re:Triplet Superconductor on Friday March 06, 2026 @03:38PM (#47280773)
"Scientists may have...that ability could...early experiments suggest...if verified, it could..."

I have become jaded with publications that hedge like this. In my experience most of these discoveries never pan out, they just disappear. And not being in the field myself, I don't know how to judge.

Does anyone in quantum computing have a read on how big a deal this is (or isn't)?

Re:Don't make me talk to your chatbot on Tuesday March 03, 2026 @06:04PM (#47240381)
The key thing here is not whether it's AI. The key thing is quality and signal. No one wants to read to a low quality human comment either.

If the AI output was actually better than talking to a real human, more useful, more concise, serving the job to be done, then no one would have a problem with it. In fact they would appreciate it. That future is not here in many areas.

The problem is people are wielding AI right now and either [a] the models they are using are not good enough, [b] they aren't being given enough context, or [c] they are deployed in a way that makes it sloppy

(Insert joke about whether this comment is AI. It's not, but joke away)
