Re:Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament on Saturday October 31, 2026 @07:09AM (#50314911)
The current president of Romania, Nicușor Dan, is apparently an exceptional mathematician[0] and quite useless as a politician.

Nice to see another article from Mr Arion Render, always a pleasure. And of course posted by ibobev, always worth watching his HN submissions.
Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:42PM (#50186489)
Yes, I heard about that too! I really hope he does at least one more truly great Ultima, and he can name his price as long as it really is a proper spiritual Ultima 7 / Ultima Online successor.
Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @02:58PM (#50185821)
I got married in Ultima 7.
Re:Talk like Paul Dirac – fewer words is better on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:12AM (#50131360)
Dirac would never make that less vs fewer mistake.

Re:Tiny Little Office on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:04AM (#50103087)
Unfortunately "literal" has come to mean "metaphorical" and descriptivists bully everyone into accepting this (ironically its own form of prescriptivism).
Re:Intel D270 GPU AI Accelerator–Up to 480 GB LPDDR5X on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:57AM (#50066910)
VRAM isn't a type of memory, it's just RAM used for the GPU. So this LPDDR5 is VRAM, just like it can be with my Strix Halo machine.

Just neighbours, otherwise people might draw awkward comparisons to certain other warmongering nations.
Re:Show HN: Quake ported to safe Rust, playable in browser on Friday October 09, 2026 @01:57AM (#50016534)
It was smooth on a 90 MHz Pentium1 from 1996
Re:Show HN: Quake ported to safe Rust, playable in browser on Friday October 09, 2026 @01:57AM (#50016528)
The port to Rust was superfluous though, could've gone directly from C to wasm. But then you miss out being able to say Rust Rust Rust...
Re:The Mathocalypse on Thursday October 08, 2026 @09:50AM (#50005802)
It's "bury the lede" BTW
Re:I see you 4Kb procedural graphics on Thursday October 08, 2026 @08:37AM (#50005108)
I've seen this, it's basically gaussian splatting, well executed and compressed; what interests me more is... is it really you, Skaven of Future Crew?! :O

Free rein*
I use mathematical jargon all the time, but I gotta admit, getting major Turbo Encabulator[0] vibes here :D

Well, at least we know it's not LLM written.

Sadly, those won't come.
That's what I mean though- in the Core 2 Duo vs K8 / Athlon days, Intel was much slower for denormals and subnormals than AMD. I'm not sure why but I thought this was common knowledge.
This has been the case since a zillion years, since the Core 2 Duo days at minimum.
Re:South Africa is at risk of becoming a mafia state on Thursday September 17, 2026 @05:03PM (#49746525)
I grew up in South Africa, and there was this classic newspaper cartoon back in the day: a kid goes to his dad and says "Dad, I want to become a criminal!" and the dad asks, "Government or private sector?"
Re:An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @09:25AM (#49712192)
Most of them are extremely unstable, which is what the Morse number encodes - the number of directions you can roll down doing action minimisation. I don't think any N-body choreographies can exist in nature, because it requires point masses, exactly equal masses, Newtonian gravity etc.

BTW, I've wondered if it's possible to have N-body choreographies in general relativity; maybe some brave person can explore that :)

Re:An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem on Monday September 14, 2026 @09:37AM (#49696676)
I have something similar at https://gravitoy.xyz

With it I have discovered up to 11-dimensional choreographies, see https://lycium.github.io/hyperchoreography/ and code at https://github.com/lycium/hyperchoreography/

Exposition video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=sIfff10hYZA

Example rendered output from Gravitoy (not of a choreography though): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3BwCoiwsGk

Looks like I need to update my catalogue to take into account the many different 2D choreographies from the references on this site!

Spelt, not spelled; tisk tisk ;)

I love everything about this!

Re:Bespoke: A Programming Language for People Who Say Please on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @02:09PM (#49630790)
Hear, hear! I should very much like to see the Linux kernel adopt Bespoke instead of that terribly uncouth Rust manner of speaking, like a mouth full of nails.
Re:Methods for Random Gradients on Monday September 07, 2026 @03:46PM (#49602204)
The difficult part is making those beautiful colour palettes.
You definitely don't want to rock the boat and undermine the diamond industry, that much is crystal clear.
Rocket Knight Adventures!!! Immediately I can hear the music in my head, and I haven't thought about this game in a long, looooong time! Thank you for mentioning it, I'm off to get a Mega Drive emulator :)
Re:Tmp.0ut Volume 5 on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @11:49AM (#49523645)
Is the zero instead of capital O in the title intentional?
Re:Terrance Tao explains 6 essential mathematical concepts on Monday August 31, 2026 @04:13PM (#49514347)
At least spell his name correctly, my goodness...

Terence Tao.
