The open internet is so back. But also I'm very worried for my privacy :)

Happy to see Trenchbroom love :) I made a high school project using it with Godot and it was such a breeze even as someone who had never done Quake / HL / Source mapping before.

most interesting footgun ever
I got it from here: https://www.clearway.co.uk/news/how-many-cctv-cameras-are-th... - it seems to check out?

(I admit, this was just the first result on Google :))

London has a dozen cameras per person, totalling to almost 1 million cameras.

As an ancedote to, they recently trialled face recognition cameras in the area I work in.

Given that, why did the police not do anything when my friends phone was stolen?

In comparison, in the much smaller city of Cambridge, the police assigned an officer to the case and went and tracked down my friends' stolen airpods. In London I don't think they even lifted a finger!

If the west is going to go down the authoritarian route, I'd rather it actually worked. I think we have a more fundamental issue that no one is willing to address--because it's not profitable. Removing our privacy achieves nothing for citizens.

Cool! Is it based on KhiCAS for the CG50 (the one with the extremely confusing documentation)?

Also doesn't this pose a risk of being used in math exams? I remember hearing a kid in my high school trying to cheat through the aforementioned.

Is this the tool that they're using for the new round in Google interviews (in the US)?
Re:GitHub's new dashboard experience now the default on Saturday October 03, 2026 @12:36PM (#49945706)
I agree, I'm sorry but the github home page infuriates me to no end.

I ended up making a userscript to redirect github.com -> github.com/<user>/repos in the end :P

It's really a shame when I stumble across an old (8y+) reddit post from search results, and I see that the useful replies are either from [deleted] or [Removed by moderator]. :(

And Mocktail (which is open source)! https://github.com/komaruworld/mocktail
Unfortunately, this would actually catch shitheads and improve the country, so the UK would never do this.
A lot of banks in the UK have mobile-app-exclusive features / services. I imagine this is because of security, but it also makes little sense. If you don't have a smartphone it is about 5x harder to do anything online-banking related here. I remember when I went camping a bit ago my phone died and I was unable to unfreeze my card.

Also, cool username =)

Does this I can finally add it to my NixOS config without having to use `permittedInsecurePackages`?

Re:Steam Frame starts at $1059 on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @04:28AM (#49723553)
I think it's a little dishonest to say they don't care. They made proton, they put out patches for their games on Linux fairly frequently.. in comparison to 80% of companies they go above and beyond.

I think this is just a symptom of Valve neglecting their (old and new) games as a whole.

> Left 4 Dead 2 has major frame pacing and stutter issues on the Native Build

Is this a common problem? I've never had it :P

Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it =)

So industry experience is more valued than a proper degree in CS?
Re:Ask HN: Which offer should I take - 18 years old. on Wednesday March 05, 2025 @06:28AM (#43265298)
Thank you!

I am thinking if I get a London role I will take it 100%. If I get Manchester I will have to weigh up the two some more.

Can I ask - did you use to live in London? Is it feasible for two 18yos to rent together in a not shit place for like £2000 a month? I'm not really familiar with the city

Re:Ask HN: Which offer should I take - 18 years old. on Wednesday March 05, 2025 @06:18AM (#43265253)
Yeah I was unsure if I should stick around or not.

I know someone who is a contractor and it seems having a broader range of companies on your CV looks better. At least from my perspective. He previously worked at a company for 15 years and got an ok salary - after about a year contracting he doubled it.

Job with worse degree (potentially) vs Degree which might get me a (better) job in the future.

Honestly, I'm unsure. I figure if people say experience is more valued in SWE / cybersec / devops then I will go for the former. If education is valued more I will go for uni. Looking for experienced people's thoughts

Ask HN: Which offer should I take - 18 years old.

(tl;dr at bottom)Hi,I'm a 17 year old and I've been interested in computers for yonks. I don't know much about this site but I figured it would be good to ask this here. I've been thinking ahead about my career in regards to this split road I think I'm at. Some advice from here would be nice - what would you pick in my situation, considering where you currently are?Recently I interviewed for a...
