It was a long time ago so I can't say for certain, but she and I both remember it being the Kendall Sq. cinema.

I'd heard from my wife who worked at TMs that they did this so engineers would stop "wasting" time programming animations on those lights.
Re:Jurassic Park computers in excruciating detail on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @09:48AM (#48920798)
My wife worked for Thinking Machines back then. I remember that they'd asked Cray to loan them a supercomputer for the film because that's the computer used in the book. Cray brushed them off, so they turned to Thinking Machines who were happy to do it.

To thank them, the producers rented a theater in Cambridge, MA to screen the film just for Thinking Machines and I was also able to attend. By far the biggest reactions from the audience that night were when the CM-5 was shown for the first time and then when the young actress says, "It's a Unix system. I know this"

Speaking of Victorian... I was in a fire department museum in Boston this past weekend and learned that the fire boxes around the city with the levers that one would pull in case of fire would communicate their location to one of the city's central fire control rooms via a spring wound Morse code transmitter inside the box. When the firemen arrived they'd also communicate with the control rooms with a Morse code keyer and audio device inside the fire box. So firemen, or at least some of them on each brigade, had to know Morse code to get the job.

One of my favorite post card collections is the book "Boring Postcards USA" from the collection of Martin Parr: https://martinparr.com/books/books-edited-by-mp/#gallery/8__...

This book is often out in my living room and rarely fails to start a conversation when friends stop by

Re:Aging and Eye Problems on Friday June 05, 2026 @09:15PM (#48420407)
I’ve had the same issues. Bifocals are definitely better, though I now have progressives for general around town or driving purposes because I was talked into them by the saleswoman. “Oh, they’re so much better now than they used to be”. Maybe, but they’re still not great. For reading, computer and other generally fixed focal length purposes I have different, single prescription glasses.
Yes, exactly. Or some simple text to overlay at the top of the card, it's a very easy problem to solve as far as I can tell.

I remember an interview with a basketball player while he was in Chicago for a game in which he said something like, "Chicago is so beautiful right here on the ocean"

How so? Seriously asking because it works fine for me.
Re:macOS Tahoe on Tuesday September 16, 2025 @04:27PM (#45267510)
I backed up and upgraded to Tahoe earlier today so I could fully immerse myself in the disaster of a release that is being reported here today. After a half day with Tahoe I simply cannot understand all the drama.

It's fine. Maybe a bit more of a departure UI wise and not as polished as the previous release but whatever, I don't see how this would cause anyone to throw in the towel on Apple and move to Linux. I've used both for years and would never chose to use Linux exclusively or even primarily.

Re:UK government advises deleting emails to save water on Tuesday August 12, 2025 @11:27AM (#44877553)
The only thing I can think of is that emails accumulate that that means more storage must be added at the data centres, requiring more electricity use. This seems trivial compared to AI power demands to me.
Re:The Best Line Length on Tuesday August 12, 2025 @08:10AM (#44875232)
Who’s screen though? Does everyone on the project code on the same size screen? What if someone has a 30” monitor and someone else wants to code on their laptop?
Re:Earth Has Tilted 31.5 Inches. That Shouldn't Happen on Sunday July 27, 2025 @03:22PM (#44703829)
The op was referring to the highly ungrammatical sentence, "Can we fix it back", not the possibility of fixing the tilt.
Re:Why Elixir? A Rebuttal to Common Misconceptions on Wednesday July 23, 2025 @02:21PM (#44662333)
To add to this, Erlang is a very simple language that you can learn in just a few days. I don't know Elixir but I assume that, as is the case with Erlang, the more difficult thing to learn is OTP and not the language itself.

For me Erlang was worth learning because it's so interestingly different to many other languages because of its Prolog roots.

After reading the third link I desperately wanted to install the 1913 dictionary on my mac but the DictUnifier app that does the installation crashes. Torture!

The app appears to be open source (https://github.com/ponychicken/DictUnifier) so I'll see if I can manage a patch.

Thank you for this and your wonderful article!

Perhaps, but I'm not giving up just yet.
Re:Coffee for people who don't like coffee on Tuesday May 13, 2025 @06:47PM (#43978624)
I used a French press for many years and loved it but in the past few years I've started to prefer lighter roasts and I think the Clever dripper does those a bit better. I also think that the Clever is a tiny bit more work than a French press, not less. I'm happy to have both options, and also my Hario Switch on occasion as well.

I like the bigger phones because of my poor vision and fat fingers. Easier to read, easier to type on.

Wow, yeah it happened immediately for me on mobile while I couldn't get past half way on my monitor. Thanks!
Re:How Boston City Hall was born on Friday December 20, 2024 @10:49AM (#42472100)
A friend worked there for years, she said different offices would either be far too hot or else freezing on the same day. There was never a comfortable room.

If the interior offices were kept clean and tidy, I can see how it could be kind of interesting in a retro-futuristic way. But given that these are government offices, they're often full of stacked cardboard boxes of files and other mess that ruins the look. At least the building doesn't have drop ceilings (at least as far as I recall.)

I can't install it because I have an older (2020) Intel mac and it requires an M1 or later chip. Is that an accident or is there a real dependency on Apple CPUs?
I saw it in a Home Depot in the US once. It was father's day and there was a sign that read, "Dad's Love Tools". Of course they meant to say, "Dads Love Tools".

I thought it was particularly funny and embarrassing for the store, but I couldn't get the clerk at the store to understand what was wrong.

It looks like Delta Walker's added Windows and Linux support: https://www.deltawalker.com/download
It was a reference to Arthur C. Clarke's book, "2010: Odyssey Two" https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/992255-all-these-worlds-are...

I really enjoy the Clever dripper too. My big revelation (from a James Hoffman youtube video) was that putting the water in first, made the whole process so much faster and maybe even tastier.
Re:Fairbuds: In-ear with replaceable batteries on Tuesday April 09, 2024 @09:37PM (#39986134)
I’m pretty sure my AirPods Pro have only about two hours battery life, but that’s probably because they’re at least three years old by now. I still love them though and would buy them again in a second if need be. I also don’t use them for music, just meetings, podcasts and audiobooks.

Oh boy: "Listen to me, do you want to use a computer that is always looking at your hands?" It took a second for that warning to sink in.
Re:Gen Z Never Learned to Read Cursive on Monday January 29, 2024 @08:09PM (#39185121)
I learned about this recently when my nephew got married. I wrote the card for their wedding gift in cursive and he and his wife asked me what language it was written in.
