Thanks! That's cool.

Ask HN: How to make text to look like that?

Coped from one of the comments on Bored Panda ( https://www.boredpanda.com/things-ai-cant-recreate/)It's the comment by: Everest wolfAll the magic characters are cut off by the HN filters, but the original looks like the text is written everywhere except in the line itself...ALL HAIL THE FISH

Ask HN: Building an FPV Drone: From Zero to Hero

Where would you start your adventure with building FPV drones having a background in electronics/CS?I thought about buying kits/parts from Aliexpress, reading books (not that many are available on the topics), or starting with some Udemy/YouTube courses but I am not sure if those are good starting points. The goal is to fully understand the principles, structure, and mechanics (electronics and...

Re:Ask HN: What to build (to get excited again)? on Wednesday September 04, 2024 @05:14AM (#41443526)
Learn something new. Go to udemy.com, choose one course with a practical effect, buy it on the discount ($9-$12, not more) and just follow it carefully. I can recommend Max Schwarzmueller as a teacher as I like his style and pleasent voice (https://www.udemy.com/user/maximilian-schwarzmuller/) but it's up to you. Take one thing like, CSS or Vue, as that will give you a quick win with a visual result, achievement and fun beside of trying and learning something new. Best!
That's an interesting idea!

I guess it is less the uni than the first job(s). On the uni for me it was everything from assembler, c, bash to java and matlab so rather no chances for catching an accent.

But later working with some folks and doing much coding on my own could create some style, like naming the methods or the overall way of thinking of and structuring the code.

Also the Clean Code and Thinking in Patterns books could shape that in some way.

Re:IEEE President's Note: Why Students Should Stay with IEEE on Sunday September 01, 2024 @04:03PM (#41419891)
The same here. Being a member for ca. 9 years. After they made IEEE Spectrum digital only and even badges digital only, I completly lost my interest due to high expenses and limited overall value. Those two little physical things were a real bond to IEEE.

Maybe it works for specialists in the narrow fields, but as I shifted from electronics to IT, I could not find real benefits for myself there, even in the "Computer" section.

Ask HN: Why ChatGPT loves the word: "eager" so much?

I have used English as a second language for many years, but I have never heard of this word.Suddenly, while talking with ChatGPT, it appears almost in every other conversation...Is it because I talk (sometimes) about PHP/Laravel/Eloquent, and it somehow fixed the "Eager loading of relationships," or is the language changed, and I did not notice?Did you notice other words like this?I found this...

You were right about the Memories! I found that "Memory updated" thing at one point, so that would explain the Motivation Letter examples.

But...

"Memory is disabled. ChatGPT won't use or create memories."

and nothing is stored there. Weird.

Still, the on-the-fly translation remains a mystery

Thank you for this hint. I checked both the app and the website and I don't have this feature. Or maybe I do have it in the chat but not yet visible in Settings...? I will keep an eye on this.

Ask HN: ChatGPT 4o on the app, switches language, references prev. conversation

Yesterday I was using the official mobile app for ChatGPT 4o and I realized several weird behaviors:- while asking questions in English, suddenly they were translated to Polish on the fly, and ChatGPT started answering in Polish. Later I saw in the chat text, that my question was written indeed in Polish. The conversation was about algorithms and implementations topics and not a single word was...

Darknet Diaries:

Now it is monthly, but if you are new to it, you will have much to listen every week for 2 years before you catch up with the latest story...

In full HD description there is a typo: change 30 to 60 fps as it is shown in points under.

> Recipe sites are convoluted with ads and articles used for search engine optimization. We want a minimalistic way of storing the recipes that we like and want share and to be able to read from my phone while working in the kitchen.

Well... I understand your point of view and good intentions, but... IMO you should read this article first: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40184673 / https://theluddite.org/#!post/google-ads

Cheers!

Remember that the treadmill is heavy. Mine is like 35kg. It is compact, foldable, but it is not something you want to play with every day (despite of nice promotional videos showing how easy it is to hide it under the bed). Also consider a rubber mat (like ie. tacx) to put under because of noise and weight distributed on several legs and not the whole surface.
Basically I am in a similar situation (my optimal speed was 3km/h) but I gave up as I had no space for treadmill AND the chair. I tried with the gymnastic ball but it take also much space when fully blown.

So what do you do after those 4 hours? You put the treadmill away and sit on the chair, you change the desks, you put a gymnastic ball on top on the treadmill to sit on it?

This question motivates me to rethink the whole operational strategy and to start using it again and maybe your answer would give a fresh idea how to solve my limited space issue. Thanks.

Oliwa is a district of Gdansk and not the city itself. Up to 1926 it was indeed independent but way smaller.

Ask HN: GitHub Codespaces on a tablet: I have some issues

My idea here is to use Codespaces from GitHub on the go - using an Android tablet with Google Chrome on it and a bluetooth/usb keyboard + ext. mouse.Sounds good, sets up nicely, but I have some issues, that maybe someone faced/solved already (I googled them but found no solution).1) when I type in the terminal and hit <tab> or <backspace> or even <space> I get duplicated...

Yeah. Honestly, I would wait those couple of months and fix it on the silver anniversary... :P

'churn' and 'churn rate'
Thank you for all the answers.

I guess the one saying about things happening for a reason, or going further, the reason why they happen is to give us a chance to act on them in some way, talks to me the most.

Ask HN: Please help to understand "Things don't just happen; things happen just"

Dear native english or even american-english speaking colleagues.Jim Rohn said "Things don't just happen; things happen just."Beside of my many years of usage of english as a second language, I just can't understand the meaning here.Could you give me a clue what he ment by this sentence?Thank you in advance.

Re:Ask HN: How can I get rid of addiction to HN? on Sunday March 17, 2024 @03:18PM (#39737152)
I had this issue with another website (a reddit clone). I tried blocking it on the host, on the router etc. and always found a way to go there. That was a moment I realized that was a sick addiction and not fun anymore.

So I started taking an eye on myself, and whenever I went there I closed the browser and reprimended myself vocally (I said: you went there again. Do not go there anymore.)

After some time I stopped typing the address, I stopped choosing it from the browser hints, I stopped choosing it from the search results.

That was hard, but worked. Even today I do not go there, as the addiction may return (I saw that on myself in the past).

Good luck and... goodbye!

Ask HN: GitHub Copilot in VSCode. Does it help?

I am using GitHub Copilot in VSCode for over a year now, mostly working with PHP, Java and various types of config files, Linux scripts etc.And I have mixed feelings. In general it helps me to write obvious, boiler-plate code and it shows examples (often useful) of parameters (names, default values) without looking into the documentation. This really speeds up things. On the downside, it makes...

Re:Ask HN: Who's Hiring in the EU? on Thursday February 08, 2024 @04:38AM (#39300057)
Do you know websites where the European startups put their job offers?

Beside the obvious ones like linkedin, indeed, monster.

Maybe there is a hidden hub like HN I am not aware of?
