I'm currently working at a startup that has a very bad code review culture. People either treat design/coding-style comments as annoying or not respect them at all. Needless to say, the code base is beyond shitty and new developers are finding it tough to understand the logic and figure out why the code is doing what its doing. I started out by suggesting minor design changes, better...
This article is just fart in the air.
Pinging is a lot different from sending data. Its not just about words but also your actions. Try uploading an image to Imgur or a video to youtube! Humanoids probably have to do them. So entirely on the cloud is certainly not possible. Maybe do some precomputation on the humanoid and send the data for comparison with a larger dataset to the cloud makes sense.
I don't use email to have lengthy period conversations.. Didn't even know it was a thing until now!
Almost all of my conversations are over chat and my primary usage of email is to sign up with sites or receive updates on my orders on Amazon/whatever. I haven't felt it as a curse so far. YMMV
This is exactly why I change email addresses every 1/2 years. I've forwarding setup from 3 of my old addresses to my current address and for all financial transactions I only use my current email address.
This was mostly my opinion too. At this stage of my career, I feel like investing in myself and learning as much as I can is the best thing I can do.

I've recently graduated out of college and have been working in the industry for a year and half. While I might've spent a portion of my salary earned so far, I'm starting to think about what I should do with the money that's left back. As of now, I haven't given any thought to it and its just sitting there in my Savings account earning a 0.5% interest.I would like to know how you've invested...
Honestly this looks like an advertisement to ADP.
In my case, yes absolutely you can say that. I don't use Facebook so that I can remain ignorant to a different personality that my friends and family have over there.
To give an example, one of my friends makes posts like a politician and thinks his views are always right - sometimes they are sometimes they aren't. But he is a friend with whom I don't want to have political discussions. I don't want to be the one criticizing him on his political views, but if I'm on Facebook that information is going to flow through me - I can't ignore it. So I choose to remain ignorant by quitting Facebook altogether.
I don't use Facebook. But I'm noticing these trends elsewhere - in online Ads. I was browsing for "interesting things" on Amazon recently, one such thing was a hand powered torch light. It was interesting because it recharged via mechanical energy but I knew that the dynamo would be crappy and it would stop working after a couple of days. So just left it there.
Then, magically, when I was reading a blog which had Google Ads in it, I saw an Ad on the right which showed "Hand-pump based rechargeable batteries" and I was like "That's so cool! I want to buy it", then realized how Google's algorithm was influencing me to buy things that I didn't even know existed.
Somehow Google was able to make out that I'm interested in things that are hand-powered. I'd like to think it was random, but I know that's not the case.
I'm actually exploring the usage of Redlock in one my projects and the first question I've is - How can you count on a program to end in a given time? That feels similar to Halting problem. The only option I've is to use an external program to kill the program that's using the lock after the lock's expiration period.
Not to mention if they try to use it internally, then might end up with package name conflicts..
How did you figure out which salary bracket you fit into?
This is bang on. Anyone here willing to share how you convince yourself to ask for a pay raise?
Coming to think of it, ION was actually pretty great. Chris Suver's brain child!
Pretty interesting I must say. Maps? Oh my I'm just entrenched into Google products.
I'm surprised, you don't Google everyday? Not even once?
Ah I do this with if() block folding in Vim.
In this case, the developer actually has return statements inside some if blocks. A general point that has stood out from all comments is to first understand how the function achieves what the function is trying to achieve.
Makes sense. So step #1, get 100% coverage for that thing.
Thanks, that came out of frustration from looking at similar long-sized functions for an extended period of time.

I'm working with an archaic code base and I'm stuck at trying to add new business logic into a 2000 line function that is absolutely crappily written with nothing but if() conditions in it. Given such a scenario, how do I go about adding a new functionality to this mess? Should I tell my manager that the function needs to be refactored and take time to refactor it?Edit: Removed offensive word

At the place where I work, it looks like more the number of years you've put in the corporate industry, the better your salary negotiation. I don't understand why this disparity exists. For instance, in my opinion, I've done way better work than a colleague of mine who is easily getting paid almost 1.5 times more than what I get paid. It is to be said that he has 4 years industry experience...
With onx.ms I built an engine that would allow my GF to set a timer and then receive a call automatically at that time. The only time she loved me for being a computer programmer.
TL;DR - Categorize your spendings to at max 5-7. See where you spend max money and try to optimize for it.
If there's anyone coming to TN, India - ping me up! I can offer suggestions.
This is fantastic, I wanted to donate - but do not have a Bitcoin wallet. Any other options?
I honestly don't know why this comment is being downvoted to hell. I am not an investor in Slack and heck I've been an IRC user all along. I use Slack because my company forces me to. This was a genuine appreciation - I now know better to not praise good things on HN.
Not sure whatever happened to the post about "Less negativity" a few months back.
I jokingly commented a few days back to a friend of mine that Slack is probably the last company I would bet a billion dollars on, to succeed. To be honest, I was very very wrong - Slack is incredible! Anybody can definitely build a Slack clone - its not an out of the world engineering challenge, but it will never be Slack, it will never have the love that Slack pours into its products and dev APIs. <3 Slack!
No its not about classist opinion.
I'll tell you how it'll go. You would probably as a way of casual conversation(in What's App or FB messenger) , mention that it would be nice if you bought an Air Conditioner. Now, normally FB won't(hopefully) read those messages because of its privacy policy.
Take free basics now, they're explicitly static that they can decrypt traffic. So now that you've mentioned an Air Conditioner, FB will start showing ads the next day saying "Air Conditioners at a discounted price". You get influenced and buy it(remember, you did not impulsively go to a shop and seek to buy one, you just mentioned it as a way of casual conversation). Do you see where its going?
That's one part of the problem. The rest is already summarized nicely by IIT professors.
