Re:Design better databases on Friday April 08, 2016 @08:00AM (#11453985)
I really hope you're using SELECT * as an example and that you don't really do that.

Damn you. I came here specifically to say the same thing.
Re:Wordpress.com serves 70k requests/second using Nginx on Wednesday September 26, 2012 @06:15PM (#4578312)
Don't forget the version of Wordpress that you download is very different from the version that's on Wordpress.com
Re:BBC adds opt-out statement for cookies on Thursday May 24, 2012 @06:11PM (#4020856)
I always thought that the ICO cookie law stuff was opt in, rather than opt-out like the BBC were doing.
Re:Migrating from EC2 to Rackspace on Saturday April 21, 2012 @04:41PM (#3872946)
It seems that they (Rackspace) are just about to launch something that might fix some of the issues that are being talked about: http://www.rackspace.com/blog/next-generation-rackspace-clou...

Has anyone used Bonobo in production?

https://github.com/jakubgarfield/Bonobo-Git-ServerBy production I mean as in a working environment rather than just playing with it or testing it.I want to get away from TFS to Git but I want to keep the repositories in-house rather than using something like github.

Ask HN: What other good mail providers are out there?

Just read this: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3581613There were a couple of providers mentioned, but nothing seemed to stand out as being better than GMail.I've been using GMail since (approximately) 2004 and I've not come across anything better. I need to be able to send email from my domain. I want decent spam filters. And a way to pick up email from my phone. And a decent UI.Other than...

Re:Free HTML5 Kindle Book on Tuesday January 10, 2012 @07:43AM (#3446726)
Just to confirm, it is free (if you're in the UK) but the link above is for the US version which isn't free.

You might want do something about the bad security message (or change the above link)
Re:Julian Assange loses appeal against extradition on Wednesday November 02, 2011 @08:35AM (#3186357)
And can you link to reliable sources with that stuff?

And there's a different between a rape trial being held in private (see fun2have's post here: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3186245) and some secret committee.

Personally, I think there are too many contradictions (like the fact that the stories have changed) for this to be something other than politically motivated. But we shall see.

Re:Ask HN: Why don't more UK graduates want to join start-ups? on Wednesday October 26, 2011 @06:27AM (#3157915)
It also might be worth getting in touch with Student Unions as some students might have entrepreneur societies that have final years that would be interested. As well as Math and Computer societies.

Generally I've found that the Unions might be more willing to spread the word to the students than the universities.

Re:Check Out The New Blue Screen of Death in Windows 8 on Wednesday September 14, 2011 @07:58AM (#2995851)
That as well

Looks like they've finally realised that few people read what's on the BSOD so there's no point in displaying it.

Looking for a room

I know this might not be the ideal place to post it and I'm sorry if this is the wrong way to go about it, but...I'm currently looking for a room somewhere in London where I can live for the next 6 months - 1 year. I've put adverts on Gumtree and I'm about to start looking on easyroomate (where I got my current room) but I thought I'd ask on here as there may be someone on here who has a...

Re:TechCrunch Comment System Kills URLs on Thursday July 21, 2011 @06:51AM (#2789061)
I posted the same on the blog post.

I would question that it could be the user (mikecane02)'s browser as it looks to me like what would happen if you didn't support the character set. Could be some linkbaiting on the OP's part.

I got confused as well. I thought the Google App Gods had smiled down upon us and enabled profiles. But my happiness was shortlived.
Is this error message saying that the admins of domains should be able to turn on Google Profiles? But in fact they can't as it doesn't exist? Have I got that right?
Re:WHOIS for Twitter on Sunday July 03, 2011 @07:46AM (#2723531)
So this is basically a front end for the Google social graph API?
Where was it advertised? I heard about it on twitter DURING the event, but I would have been interesting in going.

Nor is it a crop circle. Looks like a sports track to me.
I'm not having a dig at the site. And I didn't know that about the product token.

Could you not do something with the user agent or do you get that already?
