How do I take a U.S. e-commerce site to Canada & overseas?

Hey folks,I'm starting to think about expanding my e-commerce site to Canada, and eventually Europe.I know zilch about what's involved in taking a site to Canada. Can I get away with only supporting US currency? What kinds of legal issues are there?Any tips/resources from those who have been here before are greatly appreciated. Thanks!Andrew

Re:Tipfight adds competition to charity fundraising on Wednesday May 27, 2009 @01:46PM (#628817)
I could see this working really well if you did it with opposing charities, e.g. RNC vs. DNC. The charities wouldn't even need to endorse it, necessarily. Could be huge.

Rate My Startup: JoeMaps.us

Hello friends,JoeMaps is a new site by me and my cofounder, Joe Harrow. Here's the "elevator pitch": JoeMaps makes it easy to get a map that gives you directions between two places. Unlike traditional maps, where it's often hard to figure out where you are and where you are headed, JoeMaps are customized for your specific route. Just enter your origin or destination, and we'll send you a...

I agree - not a lot of utility in this (for me at least), but I'd pay $100 for something that did this for webpages.

Clickthrough rates for share badges in footer?

Anyone have any data on the clickthrough rates of share (e.g. Digg, Mixx, Delicious) badges placed in the footers of blogs or news sites, e.g. the Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-112308-allergens-whole-foods-nov23,0,241722.story) or CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/22/obama.vetting/index.html)?

I've used it - really helpful. Wish they would send their testers eye tracking monitors - that would rock.

Glad to see that even the smart folks at HN are subject to the temptation of mindless diversions.

Not playing football in 6th grade. I would have been a completely different person, I believe.
Learn to code -- that's what I did. It doesn't take much to get to the point where you can implement your ideas.

If there's one thing I believe in, it's not waiting for other people to help you or cut you a break -- just learn what you need to learn to make it happen.

Re:Ask YC: Best HTML Prototyper? on Thursday May 15, 2008 @07:33PM (#191178)
I love Axure for prototyping. I'm a mac user and it's windows only, and it's the only reason I have VMWare installed. Once you get it set up properly, the fact that it's running in windows doesn't even get in the way.
Re:Ask YC: Recommendation on a chat service/software on Wednesday March 05, 2008 @10:46AM (#129722)
We have a public chatroom in our campfire account that we use for this purpose.

Also, I heard that you can now embed gTalk widgets in webpages, allowing gTalk to be used for that purpose. I don't know the details or if that's true at all.

Re:Ask YC: How did you choose a name for your startup? on Wednesday February 13, 2008 @12:51PM (#115015)
* Use a thesaurus * Read lots about the problem you're solving. You may find obscure (but cool) academic terms that apply to your space. * Buy theburdenofdestiny.com from me for a MILLLION DOLLARS

It took us months to think of a domain name we really liked. We thought we'd have to settle for something we hated. But we didn't -- we thought of something, and we love it.

Re:Our Internal Blog on Saturday February 02, 2008 @01:22PM (#108405)
twenty thousand-ish. Finding a domain was painful. First we wanted tipit.com, but we couldn't even get the squatter that owns it to respond. Then we wanted hotpotato.com (god I'm so glad that didn't work out) -- the dude wanted like $80,000.

Luckily, once we thought of thepoint, not only did it become our favorite, the guy that owned it was cool and reasonable and not in the business of making a buck off of domains.

Our Internal Blog

Hey guys,I'm the founder of The Point (www.thepoint.com), a startup that launched a few months ago for organizing collective action and helping people make things happen. We've got a staff of 10 or so, including 5 or 6 developers. For the last several months, we've been communicating in part using an internal, password-protected blog, mostly as a stand-in for what would normally go into group...

Writing pesky account management e-mails for your site

I'm going through the process of writing all the various e-mails our site sends out to users, e.g. "Welcome!", "Reset Password," "Confirm E-mail Address," "You have received a private message."1. Is there a template for these things somewhere? All the little decisions about the best language to use are driving me nuts.2. Is it wrong to (more or less) plagurize the "reset password" kind of...
