Open Collective takes 5% and the other 5% goes to the non profit that provides fiscal sponsorship for the projects.

It's 10% which gets shared 5% & 5% between the platform and the non for profit that is the custodian of the funds (and provides compliance, tax filing, 1099s,etc)

Hi Chris! Open Collective Inc. is a for profit company, we develop and run the open collective platform, opencollective.com The Open Source Collective is a non profit, a 501c6 that gives fiscal sponsorship to projects so they can receive project directed funding. The value prop is having both the platform to receive and disburse funds transparently and the non profit that holds the funds, does compliance, reports taxes, etc.

You have a point! The goal though is not for one FUND to support they entire ecosystem but for many funds supporting it. 1k from one fund and 3k from another for example + recurring subscriptions from individuals, end up adding up. (disclosure, I am OC co-founder)

Hi! Pia here from Open Collective - In the FUNDS case the fees are taken when the Fund is created. Donations from the Fund are free of fees afterwards. Since the Funds are generally bank payments, there's no Stripe fees in this case.

Hi Francisco - Pia from Open Collective here. Thanks for the ping on this. We deployed a quick fix to reduce the width and we'll look at it with more time.

Re:Supporting open source with 3% of our revenue

For those projects in countries with stripe, they can use open collective with their own stripe account. Fees are half since we don’t do fiscal sponsorship (they would self host) and the benefits is that we have the whole subscription / tiers / badges system set up. If you think some of this projects might be able to use it, feel free to send them my way. I’m happy to help them.

What would an alternative be for you?

I agree, we have a long roadmap ahead and all your points should be in it. If you wish to contribute, by all means github.com/democracyos. It's an open source project.

We met Tom Atlee lately, he is fantastic. His insights on how to move forward, the importance of diversity in the process, where super sharp. I would add to the list, When People Speak by Fishkin and check Marina Gorbis' book on The Nature of the Future, specially the chapter on the future of government. Her proposal of a new large, agora of randomly chosen citizens is super interesting and challenging.

For sure! Being Open Source it's fundamental to the spirit and vision of DemocracyOS.

It's crazy what's happening in Brazil these days, as a close neighbour(Argentinean) it pains me to see such upheaval. To your point, we could set up a protocol that the SaaS version of DemocracyOS can only be used inside the limits of a constitution, but we have no control over the Open Source version. It's like twitter it's a platform for expressing oneself and it's content moderation is v. limited. It's all our responsibility to make the best possible use of the tools we create.
Re:DemocracyOS

maybe we could think about a two-tier system were we delegate only decisions that should be taken our of the hands of majority and to the citizens the huge number of decisions that we can make that affect our every-day lives. I think the only way for citizens to be responsible for the decisions we make is by start making them. We've outsourced decision-making for a far too long time.

Hi! We are trying to get enough philanthropic seed funding to find a sustainable model. Maybe OS SAS, or github's: free as long as it's open. For the moment it's all grants.

We are working to validate democracyOS votes with the blockchain. Happy to listen to any other suggestions
Re:DemocracyOS

This is exactly the type of conversation we want to have. What institutions can we design for the internet society?
Re:DemocracyOS
on Saturday March 21, 2015 @07:12PM (#9244628)
It's a super valid point. We are not claiming all decisions should be taken this way. But we can imagine a system where a large chunk of decisions can be devolved to the citizens. The constitution and the bill or rights provide a framework in the same way congress today can't legislate (or shouldn't I would say) agains our rights.

Thank you! Totally agree with the branching aspect and yesterday we were playing with some ideas to order debate in pros&cons. Also, we are looking for funding to form a blockchain team, to validate democracyos votes in bc. All ideas are super welcome! [email protected]

we are launching the hub now where everyone, even the pirate party in argentina can have their own democracyos and raise their own issues. Stay tuned

make up your mind, are we or are we not a party? if we are not, as you got tired if claiming then it's not illegal.

I agree with you. We've outsourced citizenship and thinking for a long time. It's a long road ahead the one to reverse this.

We lost representation this year, but the Pirate Party was never a political party in Argentina. They didn't even run for elections once. So please...
