News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

phoghed

Wasn’t all that obvious to anyone who read the original post when they got to the section that explicitly explained what the author of this post is now summarizing?

Sure if you only read the title and brief at the top you’d walk away without the full picture though.

Uber for talk therapy / psychology is dog shit, I’m sure this will be too.

> Somewhere

Great plan, glad someone with your wisdom is thinking so hard about these kinds of problems.

We’ll take millions of displaced truckers and put them “somewhere” and they’ll do “something”.

Luckily picking up a new trade will be as easy as switching from JavaScript to Python for them.

They’re already overqualified for DoorDash and uber after all.

Well good luck turning them all into welders and pipe fitters and whatnot

I’m sure they’ll love starting from scratch as basically an apprentice making beans compared to their previous wage

Yes, you have a moral obligation to Sam Altman’s trillion dollar business.
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:19PM (#50306108)
AWS, Azure, GCP, etc could already do this more effectively. Your bank even more effectively.

At least for LLM absolute worst case scenario you can run models yourself.

Re:Backdoors in official Claude Code extensions on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:57AM (#50303969)
Yes, food poisoning from restaurants happens constantly. There are recalls on physical products constantly. Doctors misdiagnose constantly. What point are you trying to make?
Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:18PM (#50295239)
Ah yes my mistake to respond to the spirit and reasonable implications of your comment rather than just the literal words contained in it.
Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:59PM (#50293272)
Yes certainly if you discount the 20 years of development, the creator tools, the advertiser tools, monetizing creators, live streaming, completely rewriting the whole thing, etc. Google didn't develop YouTube much.
Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:13PM (#50292520)
Same with YouTube
Well OP is asking about a specific paper and you are asking for it to be disproven, different requests and the LLM is just doing what you want.

Classic "you're holding it wrong" (maybe enhanced by exercise/nutrition science being what it is with a study and expert representing every side of an argument)

I'd personally probably do it like

> Someone told me about a recent paper which showed that sleep deprivation had surprisingly little impact on muscle hypertrophy, and that mechanical stimulus seemed to be the dominant factor.

> Can you comprehensively fact-check this, and let me know what the general scientific consensus on the topic is?

Even then you can't be certain of course. Even reading the cited studies you can't be certain unless you know enough to interpret them. But you'll probably be a bit more informed than you would be if you were just going off news article titles you see on social media like the average person.

Re:Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:25PM (#50291631)
The style / design in general looks AI. Generate enough sites, reports, etc and you'll recognize it without even being able to articulate why it's AI.

But imo it's not a bad thing. Most sites looked like shit in the past. The content is usually where I focus my changes when dealing with LLM generated HTML. And if I want it slightly less LLM flavored in terms of design I just pick a random design system to tell it to use. Apple HIG, IBM Carbon, etc.

Usually just picking your own palette, a design system, and making it remove all the stupid details it decides to add will improve your end result by a lot.

Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:03PM (#50291241)
I could be wrong as I’ve never used it, but was under the impression instacart had people do the shopping part, not just pick up an order.

Still very similar

John Formlab here, I check the referrer and charge extra to people coming from wealthy people websites
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:27PM (#50277332)
I liked the Touch Bar for custom app actions, but I didn’t like that it replaced the physical keys. Not that I use any of them much besides volume.
Reddit is undoubtedly “social media” and never had anything to do with connecting to your friends.

It’s basically synonymous with user-generated content site. It’s why TikTok is social media and Netflix isn’t, and PineDrama is somewhere in the middle because even though it’s studio content there’s still emphasis on the comments and whatnot.

Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:56PM (#50265688)
And that’s not even close to the short form 90 second micro dramas that are already super popular in China and are ramping up elsewhere. And this category is now dominated by AI
Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @04:55PM (#50265670)
There’s no end to games with near or actually 0 story/narrative.
Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:53PM (#50263997)
Yeah if they cared they could create their own captions for sure. They probably didn’t even think about it. Maybe some intern will do it after reading this thread
So the claim is basically “OpenAI's Navier–Stokes work benefited from unpublished scientific research submitted by its users”, Buckmaster and Alpöge more specifically

This is of course unsubstantiated, and probably impossible to do so from the outside.

OpenAI said

> Following an investigation, we have confirmed that Buckmaster’s Codex prompts over the two months preceding this announcement and paper on September 8, 2026, could not have influenced the system in any way, including through training.

OpenAI initially said it was uncertain whether or not it could have happened. Following investigation they said the above. And that no user input beyond whatever date could have affected the system.

So the question is do you believe this or not? Short of an external audit the answer will be “no” for many people who will continue to repeat as fact that OpenAI stole and laundered the solution. Even if an external audit found nothing, there’d still be people who didn’t believe it and kept repeating the same lines they read from other commenters. Even the original researcher isn’t making claims as strong as the average HN user is doing on his behalf.

The only thing that’s really substantiated is that OpenAI’s research on Navier-Stokes was done because of knowledge of competing work.

Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:28PM (#50261643)
The volume of content on YouTube is enormous, I’m kind of surprised they offer auto captions at all given that they have little to no competition in the space.
Re:UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:38AM (#50260086)
Not even remotely close to 600k lol. Looking at my situation, the federal tax rate is probably like 26%.

That’s without oasdi, Medicare, state taxes, city taxes, and insurance.

44% though was high, you’re right about that, because some of that tax was paid up front off of bonuses and will reduce over the course of the year.

I’ll probably end up around 35% without counting retirement and of course without counting all the other nickle and diming taxes that are paid post tax

Re:Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:23AM (#50259857)
Another problem with user content sites, these numbers are completely pulled from the ass and are a meme that just gets repeated ad nauseam. They mean nothing, but there will be people that take it seriously.

Is 80/20 ever generally correct? Why is it favored over the 90/10 meme? Why would it apply to this? Why wouldn’t the numbers be vastly different for different domains of content generation? Etc.

If you pay attention, so much user content is just repetition of something they read on the same fucking website and uncritically checked into their brain.

Current HN top post is Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking. I fully expect to start seeing comments to the tune of “Roblox is stealing porno to train AI for children” within the day in any discussion Roblox comes up in.

Why would these folk’s contribution to any other user content site be any more thoughtful?

Re:Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:12AM (#50259694)
The models are already trained on model output on purpose
Re:I will no longer upload to NEW on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:24AM (#50258074)
Same reason I can explain how to clean my house but I pay someone to do it? I want the end result, I don’t want to do the whole process myself.
Sam, pay this guy for his shitposts please
Re:UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:17AM (#50258018)
It’s around the same in the US tbh. Just looked at my paystub and it’s saying 44% of my gross pay comes out. That’s taxes, oasdi, insurance (and I have a pretty good rate), etc. That’s not including 401k contribution. Then you have of course sales tax, property tax on house and car, insurance on those things, insurance on the mortgage itself
Yes, as of now, you can do exactly what you assume that Roblox did. How is this still surprising to people?
Never, it gets new players constantly. This is like saying I wonder when YouTube is going to turn into Pornhub
