Ask HN: Openly posting secure information?

There is a post on business insider which talks about the CIA investing in the creation of data capture software:http://www.businessinsider.com/the-cia-just-put-a-ton-of-cash-into-a-software-firm-that-monitors-your-online-activity-2011-7---I had the following idea:What if one was to post information to sites which was already strongly encrypted - such that each post is the secure encrypted hash...

Ask HN: Dropbox as a platform? (Yet or ever?)

HNers,As I posted in another thread, I am looking for the best cloud backup option for a virtual team. I have been a dropbox user for a while, and while I love it - I think that Drew may be missing a HUGE opportunity of not (yet) realizing that dropbox is a potentially game changing platform.Hear me out:I have dropbox on my phone and my machines. I travel for work and incur expenses, gather...

Ask HN: Best backups/sync for virtual teams (DropBox or CrashPlan or??)

HNers,I work for a consultancy where my team is 100% virtual (First time working 100% from home + travel -- best decision I ahve ever made) - and I need to find a good way to share, sync and backup my data and the teams data.I have been encouraging others to use DropBox, but it is so focused on individual use and completely not designed around multiple users accessing the same data, that I am...

Heh, techcrunch writes every article as if their validity is wholly dependent on a techcrunch article.

I.e. Techcrunchs only reason for existence is to suck their own dick.

What is the morale after that board/earnings call where Carol was really taken to task?
>Not sure I want to deal with the overhead of putting a server in my house.

Interesting username then...

But I think that if it is an appliance rather than a server -- this thing is great.

Re:VCs are now selling their ideas to entrepreneurs on Thursday June 30, 2011 @12:52PM (#2714776)
No, he is specifically looking to create a social network for Douchbags.

FaceDouche.com

The examples of "dishing" above seem innocuous enough in print - but the reality of such an 'app' would be far more harsh.

"This dumb slut let me blah blah blah to her!" and other douchebaggery...

Re:Solar-Powered 3D Printer that Prints Glass from Sand on Sunday June 26, 2011 @12:26AM (#2697375)
GLegos. Glass LEGO made from sand and printed out.

The machine needs to be scaled and cheapened - but it MUST be made to make bricks - over time, the bricks will be refined and they will be available for sale in the Organic or Fair Trade aisle of Home Depot.

A smaller version shall be made and refined to allow girls in west africa to make beads and cups and such.

PSY-OP MOTHERFUCKER, CAN YOU HACK IT?!

This is NOT script kiddies going at it, this is bio-stux....

See the following:

Watch these in this order: http://vimeo.com/25118844 - brief overview great animation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS01Hmjv1pQ - ted talk on stux http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOwMW6agpTI&feature=youtu.... detailed analysis of stuxnet the last one is long and Bruce appears to be an arrogant prick, but it is clear - cyber war has been here for a while.

---

As I have mentioned, cyber war is here - and the legislation is lacking in its awareness - but becuase we have incompetant douches in charge of tech legislation, we will have physical war used as a metaphor to cyber warfare and thus have draconian influences from physical imprisonment being applied to digital situations.

Utterly broken.

Re:House Keys copyable from 200 ft away via camera on Friday June 24, 2011 @03:52AM (#2691423)
@cloudwalking At first I thought that fake keypress would not work if you were expected to open the door; meaning youd actually have to perform the correct press to get the door open... But you could conceivably either fake a press before - or do a bunch of presses afterward to fake the sequence... I guess this really needs to be tested - specifically against the ability of the camera/viewer to be able to tell when the 1/4" depression of a key really occurs. I think the take away here, though, is for anyone using a keypad to act like they pressed 10 keys rather than the requisite 4# sequence. Ideally with the 4 numbers non sequntial in your finger movements.
Re:House Keys copyable from 200 ft away via camera on Friday June 24, 2011 @03:29AM (#2691378)
>I fail to see how this is news at all.

I'd just like to point out both that I forget things some times and other people are new to stuff all the time.

So, while it might not be NEWS - it is always good to keep stuff conscious.

As an example, I was actively training to lock sport some years ago - but havent done anything in a long time (though I still lie to myself and believe I am into it) - but honestly have never thought of using a secret hidden webcam sized CMOS to zoom in on a lock waiting for the key to arrive.

Fuck, that is actually brilliant.

Now - instead of anything - I need to worry about a secret camera pointed at a keypad (rather than lock).

I ONLY use the keypad to enter my apt building.

At my, now previous, office - I have used the keypad to code entry to the door for 10 years.

I was caught by some anon who lived in the building and she interrogated me as to who I worked for, why I used the code, why not a key etc...

She stated "someone could see you entering that code!" - I replied "I'd see them close to me!" - obviously though I am wrong now.

I thought she was a crazy bitch - but thinking of this, now not so much.

In fact - a small device with a cam and a 3G card with periodic pic uploads is perfect and can be built for cheap if not on the market.

Even my new office has keycode access, where when I went for the interview (over by pixar) I found myself trying to spy on workers of the building entering their codes as they returned from lunch...

---

You know what would be an interesting defeat of such attacks: in addition to keycode - you have a timing around the entry. i.e. first keypress, wait 2 seconds, second wait 1, third wait 4....

Re:Should I Change My Password? on Thursday June 23, 2011 @10:56PM (#2690783)
Then it makes it COMPLETELY useless information. You know how many thousands of sites I used various email addresses on, clearly everyone else is the same.

It should tell you which sites were compromised such that you can ID if you used your email at any of said sites.

Just saying ambiguously that there was a site which may have been compromised out of the 2 billion sites online is laughable.

Re:Should I Change My Password? on Thursday June 23, 2011 @03:07PM (#2689347)
my passwrod, HUNTER2, is surely safe. I checked with some IT friends I met on IRC. Whenever I type my password, HUNTER2 - the rest of the world cant see it. So I am not worried.
Re:Should I Change My Password? on Thursday June 23, 2011 @03:05PM (#2689344)
you forgot your <blink></blink> tags!
Re:Should I Change My Password? on Thursday June 23, 2011 @03:04PM (#2689339)
so, can someone answer this for me?

I have a personal domain on google apps. The login ID is different than the email address I use/advertise.

e.g. my username for login is first-initial+last-name@[domain].com

But the email address I use for everything on that account is first-name@[domain].com

This service states that my account was compromised on 12/12/2010 most recently at the first-name@[domain].com though you could not login to my account with that email address...

So - how valid is such a check. Also - without it showing what information it is checking against, it feels really spammy. as if they are asking you to enter your email for a "check" knowing that you will enter a valid email - then they harvest the email as valid for spam.

Re:Poll: What database does your company use? on Thursday June 23, 2011 @02:25PM (#2689163)
It would be interesting to compare each companies profile to this list: # of employees + revenue + userbase + internal enterprise apps vs world facing web services.

Simply saying "I use XYZ" isnt really informative unless you know under which circumstance each was chosen.

Legacy requirements? New scrappy startup with no money? High performance need? Have shared DB stores across multiple departments/apps?

etc...

Re:53 VCs from 40 firms send letter opposing PROTECT IP on Thursday June 23, 2011 @02:22PM (#2689137)
At some point there just has to be a disobedience of some laws. Just everyone flat out ignoring them.

Why is it that we cannot hold lawmakers accountable for shit?

Re:Nevada passes law authorizing driverless cars on Thursday June 23, 2011 @02:19PM (#2689123)
There used to be a drive thru liquor store in Reno on the corner of Keystone and 4th street - but they closed the drive-thru window ~1990
Re:Nevada passes law authorizing driverless cars on Thursday June 23, 2011 @12:56PM (#2688619)
This should be a feature that one can enable should you have consumed any alcohol.
Re:Nevada passes law authorizing driverless cars on Thursday June 23, 2011 @12:55PM (#2688610)
Prostitution, Gambling, 24-hour alcohol sales, Driverless cars, rentable fully automatic weapons!

Come to Nevada, we are the FUTURE!

EDIT: I was not actually bemoaning any of these, uh, services. I lived in Nevada for a few years and aside from the fact that I was traumatized against it by the game Fallout - actually like Nevada. It is one of those states that actually fantastic to live in if you have enough money/your own business.

I plan to retire back to the Nevada side of Tahoe. Lets see how well those driverless cars handle snow.

Re:Nevada passes law authorizing driverless cars on Thursday June 23, 2011 @12:54PM (#2688603)
Money. Google has oodles of it - governments only exist to gain money (and power) -- so it was pretty obvious (to me) that this would happen quickly.
Re:Hulu puts itself up for sale on Wednesday June 22, 2011 @07:39PM (#2685911)
Why wouldnt netflix want it? Other than Adrian is pretty damn smart in saying that netflix will only be a cloud consumer - so if Hulu is heavily reliant on their own HW infrastructure for their current delivery - then I can see netflix stating its not a good fit for their model.
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage passwords? on Wednesday June 22, 2011 @02:07PM (#2684341)
I found I have brainspace for ~15 passwords. All complex - non words greater than 8 characters.

Though, as I get older.. I can feel this ability waning. Thus I am interested in using a password manager - though I feel a little uncomfortable about it as I have never used one before.
