Re:The Advantage of Generational Knowledge (2022) on Saturday August 24, 2024 @05:34AM (#41336852)
Not op but I guess the assumption here is that people would rather have less responsibility so need to be compensated to have more? I'm not sure this is true, but don't know if responsibility is its own reward. Maybe the status that responsibility conveys is?

I think the exercise is more about exposing you to other solution options (to 'break your anchoring bias'). You still have to exercise judgement as to which solution is right for the situation.
I don't think he's saying 'it cannot be physically made to work (given enough effort and discipline)'. The impression I got was more like 'if you go down this route then the incremental path of least resistance leads somewhere bad'.
Re:Choosing Java instead of C++ for low-latency systems on Tuesday February 23, 2021 @03:42PM (#26242610)
but if any of those common libraries allocate short lived objects, doesn't that ruin things?

You can make that argument about anything. How about betting on a timeframe?

Re:Health Effects of Coffee on Monday June 22, 2020 @11:08AM (#23601056)
350f sounds too low to me. First crack (beginning of a very light roast) is around 200c/392f. Most coffee is roasted quite a bit darker than that - e.g. 220c and above

depends on the price

He's saying that by getting stock grants the workers own the means to production (=socialism, sort of)
What about order cancels - would you similarly limit those?
Re:Plastic bag sales in England halved in past year on Thursday August 01, 2019 @03:38AM (#20581815)
I think the point is that the quantity of CO2e dumped into the atmosphere when you make a cotton bag has a much worse environmental impact than the plastic bag dumped in landfill.

[1] https://medium.com/@tabitha.whiting/should-you-swap-plastic-... "The study estimated that a cotton tote bag’s total carbon footprint was 598.6lb of CO2e. This compared to 3.48lb of CO2e for a standard plastic bag. That means that you would need to use the tote bag 172 times for every 1 time you used the plastic bag."

Crashed markets reflect a real difference in what people are prepared to pay for assets. That has a real direct impact on how people plan and behave.
To be fair, if it hadn't been upvoted we wouldn't have got your awesome response.

This is going to sound stupid, but after a while of shaving with a double-edged razor I found I could shave in the shower with no lather.

I just wait until I'm done washing and the steam has had a chance to soften the hair, then shave directly in the shower. It took a couple of weeks of shaving daily for my skin to get used to it but now I get it done with no irritation. An advantage of no lather/gel is that I can keep putting my face under the shower to keep the hair soft.

(I shave without a mirror, and then clean up afterwards)

This isn't going to be for everyone, and it certainly isn't as close as a gilette, but I can get the shave done in a couple of minutes.

Re:Kung Fu Typing on Tuesday February 02, 2010 @07:27AM (#1094767)
I switched from qwerty to dvorak about 10 years ago but I did it for RSI reasons rather than speed. I'm not sure if it was the dvorak that cured the RSI or the fact that the switch made me really slow for about 3 weeks.

Also I'm not sure if my speed was vastly increased or not - my dvorak is 75-80wpm on tests, but I didn't test my qwerty beforehand. For the first few months I think I was typing faster but I was also making more mistakes owing to the decreased movement required for each keypress causing letters to come out out-of-order. It took a while to get that under control.

One thing that does improve: you realise that remapping individual keys isn't a big deal, which is quite liberating. For example I've moved a bunch of punctuation keys about (e.g. parens) to make programming easier and more comfortable. It takes a couple of days to adapt per key.

Re:Stop Blogging. on Tuesday January 12, 2010 @04:20PM (#1048572)
Totally agree. I use blogs to document stuff at work for this reason. You can't rely on people frequently going back to increasing numbers of old documents to update them, so you must leave clues for the reader as to what the context was when the article was written. Date is a really important part of that.
Re:Thunderbird 3 released on Wednesday December 09, 2009 @07:04AM (#985671)
I suspect you might be mistaken.

Do you just mean you've configured multiple email addresses into thunderbird and get to pick which one to use, or have you really found out how to do "reply using the same 'from' address that the mail was sent to." in thunderbird?

(I use a different email address for each webapp I sign up to but obviously don't want to have to add each one to thunderbird, so this feature would be awesome)

There's every chance I'm being sloppy with the term reentrant. The factor vm obviously isn't functionally-pure as it accepts user input so I guess it can't be called reentrant by that definition. You can start multiple copies of the program running in different threads though.

Definitely. This is one of the things that attracted me to factor
That's smells a bit of architecture astronaut to me if you don't mind me saying. Sharing information between systems is a tradeoff (vs arch complexity), not something to be avoided at all costs.

Re:Ask HN: Historical Market Data for use in webapp? on Monday January 19, 2009 @11:19AM (#440579)
Thanks lpgauth. I scanned their faq and they mention that opentick doesn't currently allow redistribution of the data http://www.opentick.com/index.php?app=faq&event=index#b8...

I'd guess that because my planned webapp is public this would be construed as redistribution of the data - does that sound likely?
