Re:I bought my first server. on Sunday July 17, 2011 @07:07PM (#2774470)
Personally, I run a server (soon two) with Virtualmin/Webmin. They simplify A lot, first of all for people who are new to hosting.

However, it does not provide you with a one click solution for your "/index -> index.php" problem.

Re:Ask HN: Why "do not reply" on rego emails on Monday June 20, 2011 @09:28AM (#2674042)
well, If you've got many many users registering each day, you will have many people writing a non-existing email. If you try to send it, you will get an email back saying that the user is not existing. So, instead of looking throu all the mails, you just dont ever look at it, and empty it every once in a while.
Re:Lulz Sec Revealed?? on Wednesday June 15, 2011 @10:05AM (#2657132)
you really think its that easy? every fool would look up the dns-records, if he would like to see their heads rolling. I'm sure you can pay people via bitcoin to buy a domain. I've seen nothing that couldnt be faked easyly
Re:Google Chrome soon to replace Firefox in Ubuntu Linux on Wednesday June 15, 2011 @09:20AM (#2656941)
exactly. I know its not hard, its just two commands. But I just cant trust a os whos browser I cant trust.

That applies somehow to windows. I think ie is bad, so is windows.

maybe we should all switch to ONE browser, which has preferences like "browser-flavor":["google","microsoft","mozilla"]...

Re:Google Chrome soon to replace Firefox in Ubuntu Linux on Wednesday June 15, 2011 @07:58AM (#2656712)
if that happens, I'm going to debian/arch/whatever.I dont want a system with a browser which is comparable to zuckerberg concerning privacy.
Re:CSS calc() on Tuesday June 14, 2011 @10:08AM (#2652985)

Re:Is my design too simple? on Tuesday June 14, 2011 @03:21AM (#2652096)
I didnt look on the content, just the design. I like it how simple it is, but the background annoyed me a bit. I got distracted from it.
Re:Skydivers watch shuttle launch on Friday June 10, 2011 @08:35AM (#2640602)

Re:What Makes A Great Programmer? on Thursday June 09, 2011 @10:24AM (#2637225)
the ability to ask good questions for example...
Re:Ask HN: How would you promote this weekend project? on Thursday June 09, 2011 @08:42AM (#2636900)
well, posting it on hackernews is a good Idea, you've got a new user :). Besides that, I have no plan of promoting

edit: 2 Ideas: you should be able to name targets, and give them a max value. So if ping time exceeds 0.5 seconds, you get notified.

Re:Tell HN: Bitcoin currently trading for $30 USD on Thursday June 09, 2011 @05:04AM (#2636483)
yeah, I think I looked at the price a few weeks ago. However, it was on 7$ or 8$. I just downloaded an app, which shows me a graph and my jaw just dropped. 48 hours: +12$ or something. I think I should buy some rigs...
Re:How can a noob know? on Wednesday June 08, 2011 @10:40AM (#2633253)
a noob/newbie doesnt has to know. But he should be able to use google, and ask good questions.

so, for your clojure example, google it, write some code, and put it on http://codereview.stackexchange.com/ . They will tell you whats wrong with your code, and what's right.

thats just... seriously, people are buying sweaters just because jobs weared them?

It's like religion, following their god, no matter what he does.

well, you probably should get a place for many computers (good aircondition), computers with low end cpus, but a few really good graphic cards inside and mine again. Then with the leftover you could start a startup, make websites or host them, or you could donate them to some great open source projects you rely on.
Re:When your job is killing you slowly on Wednesday June 08, 2011 @07:12AM (#2632672)
copy & paste: wow… thats exactly the reason why I quit. Because my boss is an asshole, freaking out once every day. And because I think I’m not born to be employed. So, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for showing me that it was right. :)
that could have ended up much worse... everyone learns to not play with the fire. But obviously the managers of security agencys not...
dude, I said Im at work, and cant download it. I didnt knew it was just the website.

And just because they havent done it yet, doesnt mean they will never hack the psn itself.

could someone verify this? Im at work, and cant download it.

If its true, I think there will be a LOT more cheaters...

ask friends you can really trust. Those who tell you "no, thats shit" or "bullshit". Then if its good in their eyes, I begin to develope some time, and show it to them again. If its still good, I show it in some IRC chanels, with similiar topics to what I've created.
Re:Need someone for a gig on Wednesday June 01, 2011 @04:28AM (#2606501)
hacker news? you mean y combinator?
you dont need 200 hours to see whether you like it, or not. You just need the basics, you dont have to be a master of the language in the end.
learn python / php. Do some small projects. A calculator, something that pulls data from a database and displays a table. Whatever, but start small, then get bigger.

if you still like it, go ahead, and try to make small website with django for python, or codeigniter for php.

Personally, I think programming isnt hard to learn, but it needs some basic skills, and passion, which you will get if you like it. You know you really like it, if you sit at work, and think "oh, I could implement feature X into my site" or "Im an idiot, thats a much better way" :D

Re:Ask HN: From programmer to painter on Monday May 30, 2011 @10:33AM (#2599488)
well, every degree is a plus. with a programming and an art degree, you're sure more welcome to the game developer scene, than with just your programming degree.
