So glad someone brought up this book. It a good read and full of sound advice.
Re:Ask HN: After 20 years of programming, what do I do now? on Thursday August 20, 2015 @12:07PM (#10092731)
Thanks for sparking this discussion!

I'm a senior dev, but still relatively early in my career (~8 years). I've been thinking about your exact situation a lot lately as I have interviewed several candidates from various backgrounds. I see a lot of people with lots of experience, but they didn't make the cut after taking our coding tests and technical interviews that younger less experienced devs breezed through. I wonder if I will be in the same boat in 5-10 years myself because I haven't kept up with the newest technology. Like you, I have no desire to become a manager and I'm quite happy being an individual contributor.

Also being a relatively new Dad (toddler and a newborn on the way) only makes it that much harder to keep up!

I'm considering GitLab for use at work. How does it stack up against Atlassian Stash? (https://www.atlassian.com/software/stash/overview)

"it would be tricky to get all the rules of chess into a JS file"

Check out chess.js, https://github.com/jhlywa/chess.js, it does a pretty excellent job. The combination of chessboard.js and chess.js would result in a pretty sweet browser-based chess game.

Re:Lessons Learned: A Year with a Large AngularJS Project on Thursday May 23, 2013 @11:59AM (#5757564)
I wouldn't test 50+ onclick functions. I'd used event delegation to assign the click handler to the appropriate parent element. I'm not experienced with Angular, but the last time I checked it didn't support event delegation :(
Re:You Can Now Call Into Google+ From Regular Phones on Wednesday May 22, 2013 @08:09PM (#5754603)
I tried it, but I didn't see "add telephone" in the hangout window. I also had to use my gmail address to start a hangout with myself.
I agree that animating the icons just for the sake of animation isn't useful. However, the precipitation rate of the rain and snow animations could change in response to the forecast.
Re:So You Want To Be A Breaker, Part 1: Web Security on Sunday March 17, 2013 @07:48PM (#5391629)
Is "Breaker" in the title a Dark Tower reference?
I for one welcome our new supercomputer overlords.
It cracks me up every time I see a Microsoft+Linux headline.

Are most Azure users running Linux rather than Windows servers?

Re:Why I Have Given Up on Coding Standards on Thursday November 22, 2012 @08:42AM (#4818694)
This point really stuck with me:

"Fourth, good intentions; best practices; professionalism; engineering โ€“ the seductions of process. You are chasing the same gold stars you got when you were eight years old. But how is the master craftsman judged? By results, only."

It's true that we love to talk coding standards and development processes because it feels productive. At the end of the day, delivering a working product is true productivity.

Re:Jiro's Dream on Sunday September 02, 2012 @10:46PM (#4468933)
Coincidentally, I watched "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" this evening, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see it on the front page of HN. I was absolutely fascinated by Jiro, and I couldn't stop thinking about how his advice is applicable to honing you software development skills. Jiro never stops trying to improve in all facets of his craft, including the seemingly minor details.

I agree with the Roger Ebert quote that it's clear he sacrificed much of his family life to obtain this mastery. Jiro even admits that he wasn't a good father. However, if you love what you do, as he does, then I can't fault him for it. We'd be so fortunate to have that kind of passion.

Re:Accurate remake of Pac-Man in JavaScript on Saturday September 01, 2012 @05:30PM (#4465213)
The creator of this remake gave a talk on it at the houston.js meetup this week. I was thoroughly impressed with how much effort and thought he's put into this project. He said that the Pac-Man dossier was his inspiration and seems to genuinely love the game.

For those of you who have criticisms about the game's accuracy, I suggest that you submit a new issue to his github repo: https://github.com/shaunew/Pac-Man/issues. That's what open source is all about, right?

Re:Productivity vs. Guilt and Self-Loathing on Thursday August 02, 2012 @12:23PM (#4329483)
Excellent point.
Re:Productivity vs. Guilt and Self-Loathing on Thursday August 02, 2012 @09:23AM (#4328571)
Ditto. I feel the same way about HN. I love the submissions and find it all fascinating, but sometimes I just need to take a break from HN otherwise I get too down on myself.

You have to remind yourself that people are showing off their accomplishments here. It seems like everyone is an all-star and they stamp out genius products everyday, but really you're not seeing all the hard work (weeks, months, years even) poured into those projects.

Wow HN readers, you're awesome! I didn't expect such a wealth of information when I posted this an hour ago. Keep it coming!

I'm sure you didn't intend to insult autistic people with that comment, but autism != stupidity. Just wanted to point that as my sister is autistic.
Re:Google+ users can now use Hangouts on iPhone, iPad on Wednesday July 11, 2012 @10:43AM (#4229394)
Hangouts is nice, but why did they drop Messenger from the iPad app? I used it regularly on my iPad prior to the update.
Re:Trello is now half million strong on Monday July 09, 2012 @01:54PM (#4219395)
Is it a public beta? I'd love to participate.
Re:Trello is now half million strong on Monday July 09, 2012 @01:05PM (#4219092)
I started playing with Trello a week ago. It's beautiful and I see huge potential using it for my daily todo list. One thing I really want is a dead simple way to add new items to an "Inbox" list, which I sort later. (Thinking GTD)

An Android home screen widget and maybe a Chrome extension for this would rock. This is how I currently use Remember The Milk on my phone because you can specify a default list for all new items.

Is something like this in the works? If not, looks like I should be able to cobble something together using the Trello API.

Even though I recommended the book, I completely agree with you.

Here are a couple book recommendations for those of you looking to improve your JavaScript:
