On Aug 5, 1891 Puck magazine published a cover related to privacy.

Does anyone at HN know where I can get a copy of this magazine? I'm willing to pay. The title is linked to the picture of the cover.

don't sweat it. not all, but lots of people here expect to be treated with kid gloves and get outraged at even the mildest criticism
Re:Why I care about Firefox OS fading away on Tuesday January 26, 2016 @09:13PM (#10977768)
This is something I never understood about Firefox OS. Why did they not package it up in a way that it could be easily installed on someone's existing smartphone. I was eager to give it a try also but there was nowhere to buy the hardware and I never found a way to install it on a spare smartphone.
I agree, its totally out of control. Kind of ridiculous when you go to a concert and the majority of people are watching the show on the screen of their phones rather than directly
I doubt that's the rationale. No offense, but you sound like someone who only knew about him because of his show. He's been doing a lot of different things and I would say that arguably his career is doing better than ever.
Re:A mobile, desktop and website app with the same code on Thursday November 05, 2015 @06:04PM (#10516766)
I'm not sure if it works that way in real life. Dreamweaver made it really simple to create websites but look at the quality of what was produced. Any good developer would not use this tool even though it did make things simpler
Re:A mobile, desktop and website app with the same code on Thursday November 05, 2015 @03:48PM (#10516010)
This is a taste of the future. More and more people are creating things using tools and frameworks but not really understanding the underlying concepts. When I pick up a bookshelf at IKEA and put it together, I don't start calling myself a carpenter because of it.
Re:A mobile, desktop and website app with the same code on Thursday November 05, 2015 @03:40PM (#10515974)
I don't think it was dismissive at all. When a post rises to the front page of HN people are going to post comments both agreeing or disagreeing. In my case, I don't see what all the hoopla was about or how this was upvoted to page 1
Re:A mobile, desktop and website app with the same code on Thursday November 05, 2015 @03:14PM (#10515838)
Hasn't this already been done? It's called a web app using html, css and javascript
Re:Signal for Android: RedPhone and TextSecure in one app on Tuesday November 03, 2015 @04:01PM (#10502613)
Wouldn't that be a huge security flaw? Someone with access to your phone could uninstall the app then read all the messages.
Re:Google timer on Monday September 23, 2013 @01:15PM (#6432451)
it looks like some default limits are in place for this. Here's what I found:

Max for seconds: 999 Max for minutes: 999 Max for hours: 23

When did this happen? As of March 2, Rap Genius was still seeking to get money refunded.

If its only a few customers that are bent out of shape, how come you haven't quickly offered them refunds?

I've already tried that with no success
Re:Colleges and Employers Demanding Facebook Passwords on Tuesday March 06, 2012 @08:32PM (#3673835)
Thats not true. I've had several employers tell me that not having a LinkedIn account was amateurish.
Re:Colleges and Employers Demanding Facebook Passwords on Tuesday March 06, 2012 @12:22PM (#3671925)
It will probably get to a point where employers think you are lying because "everyone" has a facebook account.
Re:CorkboardMe now an "app" -- all in HTML 5 on Tuesday January 31, 2012 @11:26AM (#3533920)
I know I would be very interested. The company I currently work for is attempting to do something similar, so it would be good to see how you guys did it and what the pitfalls are.
Re:No New Accounts Today on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @03:05PM (#3481588)
Why do you assume he's not being honest and then criticize him for that? Could it be that pg is trying not to be a dick?
Re:Why you Should Bury your Sign Up Button on Friday October 21, 2011 @02:16PM (#3140951)
right, but wouldn't low numbers to begin with indicate problems beyond just the website? What's the metric then? If the site is generating 100k a year and you bump conversions by 10% is that success? If the site is only generating 10k per year, then does conversion need to go up 50% to be considered successful?
Re:Why you Should Bury your Sign Up Button on Friday October 21, 2011 @12:26PM (#3140495)
Am I the only one who thinks perhaps his expectations were too high. I'd be extremely happy if the redesign I'm working on increased the conversion rate by 20%. How is that failure?
Re:Ask HN: Can an Iphone app just link to a website? on Thursday October 13, 2011 @08:57PM (#3109468)
Basically, I'm trying to appease higher ups who insist that we need an app, but dont understand all the complexities about maintaining separate codebases, app store approval process, etc... As long as there is something installable in the app store, they're happy. And I can code the site in such a way as to mimic a native app, so the end user wont know the difference.
Re:Ask HN: Can an Iphone app just link to a website? on Thursday October 13, 2011 @04:07PM (#3108567)
Right, I understand that part, but it still sounds like it converts your site into a native app. If I then made a change to the site, I would have to do the whole process over again. I'm looking for something that points to the site, so I can update the site all I want without having to change the app at all.
Re:Ask HN: Can an Iphone app just link to a website? on Thursday October 13, 2011 @11:20AM (#3107479)
Thats great, I'm going to check them out. Could the same thing be done for android apps as well?
Re:Ask HN: Can an Iphone app just link to a website? on Thursday October 13, 2011 @11:17AM (#3107464)
Yep, I've seen phonegap, but I'm not looking to port the website, just have an app that could display it.

Ask HN: Can an Iphone app just link to a website?

I've created an HTML5 website which when viewed on the Iphone, is able to mimic the look and feel of a native app. Is there anyway to create an Iphone app that can be submitted to the app store, where the only functionality is that it launches the site?Basically, I need the end user to not be able to tell that they are working with a website instead of a native app.

Re:An open letter to NetFlix (or how to treat your customers) on Sunday October 09, 2011 @03:02AM (#3089892)
Can you explain exactly what devices they wont stream to? I have Netflix also and am able to view it on my PC and my TV thru Roku or XBOX.
Re:Netflix Splits DVD And Streaming Businesses on Monday September 19, 2011 @08:49AM (#3013300)
What's to stop you from switching to Amazon? Have you tried watching a movie on Amazon? Way less usable and its hard to find movies sometimes. Netflix has a way better interface and what I find myself doing is checking on Netflix first, and then only if they don't have it, do I go to Amazon.
