Feels like now we're just redefining our rules so that the people we don't like are out and the people we like are in. Does the content creator have the right to determine how their work is used or not?

What's the worst-case scenario they're trying to avoid from being 100% dependent on SpaceX? Perhaps it's something like the present scenario. If the vaccine is as bad as the disease, then skip the vaccine and just chance it.

It's too bad that asking "source?" comes across as hostile unless clarified to be otherwise. Maybe the internet should adopt something similar to the "/s" tag that signals that sentiment.

It can be one way for many subs, and another way for others. Go to a sub that deals with controversial issues, find a threat with a lot of deleted posts, and look up that thread on unddit.com. Often times you will see mods deleting all dissenting opinions and not allow any discussion about it to even take place.

The masses got stampeded into supporting the protest because people like to feel that they're taking part in some righteous battle. Sucks for spez that he got outmaneuvered by a cabal of mods who derive their feeling of importance (and oftentimes a side income) from having control over a bunch of popular subreddits who are upset that their status is being threatened. Hope Reddit comes out of this alright.

It's a reasonable policy if we're talking about a very niche hobby. If it's /r/news or /r/nfl where the name serves as a natural Schelling point, then it will attract power-hungry people who are able to indulge their drive to control others with a large natural constituency that continues to flow into to their subs without any awareness of its governance.

They took the ball and went home. Some went through the motions of having a poll to try to legitimize it, as if the community would rather just shut down their subreddit for good because the mods feel disrespected.
Re:What Reddit Got Wrong
on Wednesday June 14, 2023 @03:32PM (#36331341)
Reddit should allow shadow moderation teams to fork a subreddit--easily findable on the subreddit's page rather than through the grapevine about the alt's existence, which users can opt into--to address the issue of name squatting and overbearing moderation. If a critical mass of users vote with their feet, they can flip the subreddit. It would also let users be aware of what the issue in contention are and choose what they want to read, whereas currently the mod teams are pretty quick to squelch all dissent so that their captive audience isn't even aware of the drama.

Re:Robots Aren’t Killing the American Dream
on Tuesday February 21, 2017 @07:59PM (#13701914)
The problem with robots comes from the fact that you don't own the robot that replaces your job. When I write a script to make a job that took one hour take one minute, I benefit from that. When someone else creates software that does my job for cheaper, I might be out of a job. We don't yet have a mechanism for sharing the wealth gains with people whose labor is obviated by technology.

Seems like a microcosm of the gentrification controversy. I'd like to see BM fork, just to see a social experiment play out, as it might be instructive for other issues that are not so conducive to experimentation.
Have a BM2 where the original ethos is more strictly enforced, and see if all the rich people now find BM1 too phony and want to move to BM2 where they can get a more "authentic" experience, then proceed to ruin that with their money for the "artistic class". Or maybe everyone just prefers nicer things. Honestly curious.
Re:EU Referendum Results

You have it backwards. The English are on the fence about it, but the Scots want to remain by a huge margin. If the UK votes to leave, it's very likely that it will trigger a re-referendum for Scotland to leave the UK and rejoin the EU.
