Re:Thoughts on Asunción, Paraguay on Wednesday June 25, 2025 @01:26PM (#44379785)
A couple of reasons why Paraguay is a great place for remote workers:

* Friendly people * Great food (soups like Vori Vori, delicious BBQ) * Decent internet * Cheap rent * Low taxes (no taxes on foreign income) * Timezone alignment with the US * Economic stability

I’ve been here over 10 years and as long as you learn to not rely too much on public services, you’ll be fine.

I’ve worked on the Day One & WordPress iOS mobile apps for the last five years.

I just shipped a new iPad experience on the Day One app: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBSv1sHOZX4&t=412s

  Location: US-timezones
  Remote: Yes
  Willing to relocate: No
Technologies: SwiftUI, Swift, Obj-C, UIKit, Core Data, Xcode, iPad, macOS, release management, TestFlight

I also have experience in health and wellness apps (WeightWatchers) and financial apps (Itaú bank and BBVA bank).

I studied Electronic and Computer Engineering at Griffith University, Australia.

Re:OpenAI Brings ChatGPT to iOS on Thursday May 18, 2023 @01:21PM (#35991221)
It's not available on the Paraguayan App Store yet. The same thing happened with ChatGPT itself, it wasn't available in Paraguay for a couple of months and no explanation as to why. I get that it's a free research preview and they don't have to, but it would be nice if I could get these things when most others do.

I can switch stores but would need to cancel subscriptions.

Re:Amazon more than doubles max base pay to $350k on Monday February 07, 2022 @11:58AM (#30247532)
Does this affect contractors, or just employees? This year, I noticed Amazon hires international contractors for engineering roles and I don't think I saw that before. I wonder if Amazon is opening up more roles internationally (via contractors), while increasing wages of employees to retain folks in US/Canada/etc. I don't have any data to back this idea up, it's just a thought.
Re:Life before smartphones (2020) on Monday August 02, 2021 @01:04PM (#28039375)
This is eerily similar to videos forwarded on WhatsApp about "things you'd only understand if you were born in the <insert decade here>" :)

I did relate to it though. It would be apt for a video about things you'd only understand if you're a millennial.

> Moreover, I feel like it's going to be a big problem that the architecture you're deploying your code to is different than the one you are developing on.

iOS apps—which run on ARM chips inside iPhones—have all been developed on Intel-based Macs.

I think that the test cases included with packages might have the advantage of being able to obfuscate URLs or other strings as benign test dummy data.

This would be especially easy by using the technique called string sampling that the author mentions. I could choose a "Lorem ipsum" like text for use as dummy data, but ensure that the first letter of every word, when combined, forms the domain name of a server that will be used to download a second malicious payload.

Inverse: "A schrödinbug or schroedinbug . . . is a bug that manifests itself in running software after a programmer notices that the code should never have worked in the first place." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisenbug
Nice to see Paraguay present here on HN, I live here in Asunción.

I also heard of some people near Luque without power Sunday and Monday, but I'd guess it was an unrelated ANDE incident.

According to Paraguayan news [1] (Spanish), the failure was on the Argentina side of the Yacyretá hydroelectric (which is shared by Argentina and Paraguay), not at the plant itself. Only a few Paraguayan towns close to the hydroelectric itself were affected, while Argentina and countries it resells electricity to were out of power.
Slightly confusing how although the article's opening paragraph currently says "...an explicit order" from the state education department, it goes on to quote it later where it can be seen to be just a recommendation.
I found Susan Fowler's story quite interesting, as told on her blog: https://www.susanjfowler.com

Re:How to drive in India (2015) on Tuesday December 04, 2018 @11:51AM (#18601118)
A couple more from around the world (esp. Paraguay): 1. To drop a passenger off where there is no street parking, just turn on your hazard lights and stop in the middle of the road. 2. In the seconds before a red light turns green, the cars behind you will honk to get you moving. 3. Be prepared for squeegee men at traffic lights who clean your windscreen for coins even if you say no. 4. Most city parking spots are controlled by guys who "take care" of your car while you're away for notes (really your car would be better off without them, they sometimes scratch your car if you don't pay). 5. Asphalt streets have preference over cobble stone. 6. Speed bumps come in all shapes and sizes (and are not always marked). 7. Drove through a pothole? Hey, you should've been looking where you're going. 8. Pedestrian crossings (zebra crossings) have no real significance.

Re:A newly discovered moon tunnel on Sunday October 22, 2017 @10:49PM (#15530341)
You worked on this actual data? It's amazing how Hacker News brings together people from such diverse backgrounds.
It's standard for banking apps to go through all sorts of testing including penetration testing before going into production (here in Paraguay that's how we do it).

That this went unnoticed suggests that:

- the API architect (assuming this web site obtained data via an API, not directly from the database) forgot to validate that requested account belonged to the provided cookie

- the web developer didn't think to test this

- there was either no penetration testing (the author mentioned that this feature was likely released in a rush), or it was not properly performed

If the Unabomber had been smart enough he would have realized that these fears are actually contemplated by others and regarded as known risks.

I love it when I find an article about something that has crossed the edge of my mind, but which I've never given proper thought to.
Re:Employees Line Up to Get Microchipped in Wisconsin on Wednesday July 26, 2017 @12:41PM (#14857783)
Switching jobs would incur a slight penalty of 1) removing chip, b) re-programming chip, c) leaving chip. I think this is something a lot of people would like to avoid.
I like how the number 42 is weaved into this.

At 177 light minutes into the journey, there is the following message:

Emptiness is actually everywhere. It’s something like 99.9999999999999999999958% of the known universe.

leaving 4.2E-21 or 0.0000000000000000000042% non-emptiness in the universe.

I can't find any sources backing up this figure, but I wonder if it was the author's intent to smuggle in a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference.

Edit: Just saw the second reference to this at 208 light minutes.

Nice, as an Australian I concur.

I live in Paraguay, could anyone shed light on what stereotypical views/biases I would experience in a job interview as an Aussie living in Paraguay?

Re:Prophet: forecasting at scale on Monday February 27, 2017 @10:49AM (#13745042)
For a corporate credit analyst working at a bank, what are some good introduction material for getting into forecasting using tools like these?

I see this being applicable to analysts when deciding on on a company's credit worthiness.

Ask HN: Most extraordinary people of 2016

Who is the most extraordinary person you have discovered in 2016? Sometimes in life we come across people, often online, whose work or life inspires us. Preferably this person should have an online presence such as a blog or website where readers can find out about them. One person per top level comment.
