Re:Token growth indicates future AI spend per dev on Monday August 11, 2025 @04:49PM (#44869309)
that's a good point, however maybe the difference is that kilo is not creating a situation for themselves where they either have to reprice or they have to throttle.

I believe it's pretty clear when you use these credits that it's temporary (and that it's a marketing strategy), vs claude/cursor where they have to fit their costs into the subscription price and make things opaque to you

Re:The unwritten rules (till now) of negotiating with Meta on Tuesday February 27, 2024 @04:56PM (#39530646)
maybe it's the other way around? other companies started to up level during covid and hiring mania?
Re:Driverless cars may already be safer than human drivers on Thursday August 31, 2023 @11:07PM (#37346337)
self driving cars are only good for city built around cars. I was in Marseille - France - last week and a driverless car would not drive more than 100 yards there before being stuck
Poor people can’t live in the places you’re describing so they’re going out of the public transit coverage

You’ll still have all the stuff in your bedroom-office
Basically this yes
I think the engineering management field is going to drastically change in the next 5 years (probably 2 but industry will be slower to changes in some areas). We are already seeing signs at companies like Twitter and meta.

Exciting times for EMs!

I did and the answer was yes.

Re:John Carmack Leaves Meta on Friday December 16, 2022 @10:17PM (#34024116)
I also work at a faang in a senior engineering role.

I agree with what the other commenter is saying. I’ve been in several teams with several managers and xfn partners and you have a lot of different cultures. From the toxic wasteland to the ultra focused get shit done right fast environment engineers love.

To your point about why more people complain than not, it’s the human condition. Haters hate is stronger than non haters happiness and are more than willing to share their salt

Re:Scrum has failed the developers on Saturday December 10, 2022 @09:07PM (#33939292)
fair point about needing the beginners for a place to start.

The turnover issue we're seeing in the industry definitely doesn't help with seniors leading the way. which ends up being a problem top to bottom

Re:Scrum has failed the developers on Saturday December 10, 2022 @12:56PM (#33934850)
this is one way
Re:Scrum has failed the developers on Saturday December 10, 2022 @12:56PM (#33934847)
I'm not sure why you think I've done a bad job implementing these methodologies.

I've actually done a GREAT job. These teams shipped.

But I realized that they didn't ship because of the actual methodologies but the core set of values we implemented as a team.

ergo, these methodologies are a sham.

Re:Scrum has failed the developers on Saturday December 10, 2022 @12:54PM (#33934828)
they do hold up for a while. but it's all ritualistic BS that is not needed. and to be clear, the teams WERE shipping. And were successful. But also quickly abandonned these methodologies in favor of some core values we implemented as a team. I don't think it's very graceful of you to assume my job was just a failure.

What I'm saying is that I was cargo culting too, because I personally believed in these methodologies.

But I realized after seeing many situations, that success is not linked to the usage of these methodologies

Re:Scrum has failed the developers on Friday December 09, 2022 @11:59PM (#33930019)
I don't understand why we're still talking about SCRUM.

People saying they're using SCRUM (by this I mean "literally saying 'SCRUM'") are a dying breed and if they're not then they're cargo culting and I'm not sure why this is more of a big news than management cargo culting waterfall or kanban.

I used to be one of these process experts selling methodologies to whoever was ready to pay, from SCRUM to lean startup.

After doing this full time for 2 years the only conclusion is that none of these processes hold long enough. Why?

1/ every product / team / output is different. some teams should be ticket driven, other exploratory driven, and each of these methodologies apply to one situation only 2/ high turnover in the industry. meaning that new people come and organically change the new flavor of the day, the dynamic of the teams and the throughput of the team 3/ all of the best teams I've worked in the industry (from seed stage to FAANG through late stage startups, and even F50 companies), just do WHATEVER that works for them and don't comply with the flavor of the day (except for the looks of it). They all use a shared core set of values (deserves it's own blog post), and you can find this core set of values in most agile methodologies, buried behind ritualistic behaviors

anyway. I could go on.

Just let it go, and if you're working in one of these last companies applying SCRUM unironically, you're probably not in a high performing team. Time to move

Re:Meta lays off 11,000 people on Wednesday November 09, 2022 @10:39AM (#33533125)
Not all these people have the same jobs though so I’m not sure what you are getting at.
Re:Show HN: Property Trends Scraped from Zillow on Wednesday August 03, 2022 @11:18AM (#32332913)
why though? genuine question.

sometimes sellers over or under estimate their home. Over asking price doesn't indicate how a market is doing. It indicates other things: are sellers under estimating their home to start bidding wars? how delusional some sellers are on the price of their home? etc. These are interesting things to know, but as a buyer, I'm more interested in putting the right offer at the right time, and there's no better indicator than $/sqft for a specific location. Of course it varies (how many bedrooms? how many bathrooms? other cool amenities?) but this could be a subfilter of this product.

Re:Show HN: Property Trends Scraped from Zillow on Tuesday August 02, 2022 @08:04PM (#32325964)
"over the asking price" is a useless metric, might be more interesting to elevate $/sqft.
not everywhere. you have to pick it up in san francico for example
Re:Vending machine in Kyoto serves high quality French cuisine on Thursday September 30, 2021 @02:39AM (#28703789)
most of this doesn't sound or look like french cuisine at all, but I find the concept interesting.

is this just "machine" that is filled everyday with pre made food or actually fully automated? One would actually be impressive.

Re:Peer recognition works better than bonuses on Sunday August 22, 2021 @12:32AM (#28262891)
Nah, bonus is better.
great way to make the poors poorer and make poors pay for a problem that richer folks tend to create. This would effectively create a tax on the poor, as poors are the ones that live further away the pockets of work.
I know this was a joke, but this is some sci-fi level plot.
Re:DoorDash removing 1-year cliff for equity grants on Wednesday July 07, 2021 @09:46PM (#27767713)
the question is often do you have the means to acquire that pre ipo stock. except if you join very early, it's too expensive to buy your stock with the level of risk associated.

as an example, I joined an early stage startup as an exec (potential good deal!), but I would've had to shore 300k to exercise my stocks, pay taxes on it (minimal, that's the huge advantage here), and more than probably see it fail.

now let's play the opposite scenario: you join as an engineer late stage, each ISO might be valued at 10 dollars each. how do you exercise.

this game is skewed towards founders.

in my example, I had to quit for personal reasons and the company was later acquired. however I wan't able to afford, so I got got of $100ks at the time of acquisition.

removing these 90 days time would have let me gain what I was owed.

no hard feelings, because I knew the game, but it was the moment I decided no more startups that have this 90 days BS.

Re:Rethinking Triplebyte on Thursday June 17, 2021 @07:32PM (#27545640)
10 years ago, I built chooseyourboss.com from scratch for a client of mine (with one of my best friends).

Our principles at the time were very similar to what Triplebyte is trying to do now: give power back to developers.

We build a version of "hired" (did they die?) before "hired" even exist. A matching platform that was matching people with companies that was sharing both their desires and values. Small/big company. Consulting/Product company. How much $$ do you want? What technologies you're interested in? Where do you want to work? All of this anonymously of course.

It was all fine and dandy, the company actually still exists and generates revenue, but I'm overall very bearish on the recruiting space.

It's a sales game. It's a numbers game. And on top of this the people top companies REALLY want to hire aren't hanging out in these recruiting platforms. So as a platform you're only feeding average/average low candidates to companies, and in the meantime, companies that have in house or externalized sourcing resources get better results by going over linkedin and their employees network.

It then becomes a financial game for companies.

And platforms that are not linkeding rarely win.

how do you type with low refresh screen?

why not both?
Re:Airbnb’s Stunning IPO on Friday December 11, 2020 @08:00PM (#25394017)
these are not non-engineering jobs to be done, these are internal and external products to build.
