It's two different sets of creators -> two content pools. Also, there are many, many users outside of US or China, with their own regional content pools.
On a side note, this change's author is from ByteDance. It's great to see everyone working together on open source.
Serious question: Why does this have so many upvotes? As a layman I have never heard of J or Jd before, someone please provide some context?
Good for Huawei. Finally, an affordable alternative to Remarkable.
It's winter right now, go for a run outside, especially if there's snow. You can watch some YouTube videos about how to layer up properly. The air is extra crisp right now and almost nobody runs so the world is yours. I find it extra relaxing and a huge runners high afterwards.
I've worked with the accessibility team at YouTube. That team has brilliant engineers who are themselves blind or deaf, so they really do understand their customers, even if that community is relatively small. If this a grassroots decision from that team, I'm sure they have thought long and hard about it, and I respect that decision.
I still believe Alphabet is a company that truly wants to make the world a better place -- I hope they're living by their principles, and not letting the profits (of which they have plenty) get in way.
Wouldn’t this be better handled by a more sophisticated solution like some kind of law or governance organization? Banning specific apps is like whack a mole. There will also be other countries with opposing ideological beliefs - we probably shouldn’t want to play whack a mole country by country either.
This is so cool! I'm curious, how much does it cost to run a server that does deep learning inference on the scale of hugged-by-hn-frontpage?
Truly sad. When HK was handed back to China in 1999, did we know this is inevitable?
Does anyone know when we will likely hear the result of this trial?
Does the new EO override the previous EO? Technically, if it’s allowed “no transactions” in 45 days, then it can’t really sell anything in the latter half of the 90 days.
Maybe a correction: The article mentions that Amazon asked its employees to delete the app. But Amazon later retracted that decision.
Can we split screen vertically now?
Can someone provide an ELI5 on what are yield curves and why is it an indicator of a recession?

For logging into slack, they just email me a link, then I click on it to sign in. This is very convenient as I don’t have to remember another password. Why don’t more websites/apps do this? Is it due to some security issue I’m not aware of?
Looks great! How did you align audio with text?

Hi HN, there is an option to get symmetric gigabit fiber internet (same download and upload speeds) at the new building I'm moving to. I'm debating whether I actually need that kind of speed (versus, say, 250 Mbps). What interesting things do you / would you do with really fast internet?

When I browse HN, I usually pick out a few articles I want to read from the front page, then email the links to myself to read later. This method works out pretty well for me. I’m wondering if people have other strategies that work better?
This will be a great affordable option for students who want to use a surface to take notes!
Paper clearly cites 5 people died from this before from not doing it safely.
Can we harvest this methane gas and use it as an energy source?
Yes, but there's no guarantee that lambda will reuse a connection / won't continue to request new connections against your database :( Currently, it seems like there's no "concurrency limit" or "per-function throttling". It would be amazing if requests are just magically queued up in SQS and lambda just processes them... like a traditional queue-worker system except now we don't have to manage the infra.
How do you use database connection pools with lambda? I thought it wasn't possible.
The whole google cloud platform doesn't get enough cred. Would be nice to add it to the list.
Peer5 is a brilliant idea! Glad to see they're doing well.
Invest it in your education

Are there are online classes one can take to become a professional data engineer? That is, become good at data modelling, data cleaning, building pipelines, monitor data quality, etc? This question is inspired by the Google Data Engineer certification exam: https://cloud.google.com/certification/guides/google-certified-professional-data-engineer.pdfMore detail on exam here:...
Great site! What inspired you to create this and how will you afford to keep it running?
