Maybe district heating will start make sense, even given the low efficiency due to low temperature gradient.

It’s definitely an experience to see the food you got thrown away and be given an apple and some bread instead.

Many kids would opt to bring in a pack of ramen, crush it up, add the seasoning and eat it dry instead. Many (myself included) just wouldn’t eat to avoid the humiliation.

But, hey, at least we had that most expensive high school football stadium in the world for a time!

Growing up, my school couldn't afford paper for math worksheets while building the most expensive high school football stadium. There are definitely some priorities in Texas.
Backups or satellite imagery is my guess.

I know it’s somewhat unpopular because of many things are labeled with insignificant quantities or are treated as a fact of life, but Prop 65 has to be my favorite ballot proposition.

I would rather know what potentially harmful substances are in something and decide if it’s acceptable than not be told at all.

I’m not convinced a human driver wouldn’t notice running over something and the additional friction from dragging somebody over a distance.
Texting and driving ought to be treated similarly to a felony DUI.
+1 for Schwab. An ATM in a foreign country ate my debit card. One call, which was connected to a real human in less than a minute, and they overnighted a new card to my hotel.
CMU has public IPv4 on WiFi. It’s awesome to spin up a server on your laptop and send a link to anybody in the world.

Only recently in response to all this anti-trust stuff.
You can get a recycled 512gb iPhone NAND for ~50USD.

You might have to copy the original SYSCFG (containing stuff like mac addresses, calibration, etc) to one of the new NANDs using something like http://www.jcidtech.com/product/product-86-806.html

All the iDevices (including laptops since at least T1) use the same NAND packages. Pre-iPhone 8 / T2 devices use a BGA60 package, while NANDs in devices after that use a BGA110 package.

For example, the NAND chip found in the iFixit teardown of the 2019 16 inch (TSB4227) is explicitly listed as supported by the programmer linked above: https://i.imgur.com/06a0KEg.jpg

I've really come to enjoy Synalyze It! while developing some media format decoders. It has grammars for a ton of file formats builtin.

Well worth the 90$ for the pro version if you spend a lot of time in a hex editor.

I've been using this on/off since early 2019. Much better than stock honda LKAS / cruise control in terms of detecting lanes, lower speeds, etc.

The driver monitoring has gotten a lot better as well. If you are inattentive (based on your gaze) and don't respond the the prompts quickly, it plays a loud alarm and disables the system (until the car restarts) to prevent something like the videos of people sleeping in Teslas you see online.

Growing up in Texas "Are you ready to have your son judged based on his suitability for a future career in football?" hit a little too close to home.

My district built the most expensive high school football stadium to one up the town south of us that previously held the title, but we were using half sheets in class because they couldn't afford paper.

However, there's a lot of different school districts and you can surely find what you want. Not sure if growing up in the Bay area would've necessarily been a better experience.

Re:Ask HN: How do you like developing on an M1 Mac so far? on Saturday January 16, 2021 @02:01PM (#25804458)
I got mine on release day. Go debugger support took a while, but now it's my dream computer.

My biggest complaint is that it doesn't warm my lap. The battery life makes up for that though.

My other computer has a 3900x and it's been getting very little use even though I'm homebound.

Re:Uhubctl – control USB power per-port on smart USB hubs on Sunday December 13, 2020 @05:59AM (#25405708)
Bandwidth might be an issue. I've played with thin clients on my local network and while one usb camera is fine, two makes the entire experience start to chug on a gigabit lan.

This has been my experience as well. Using a non-qwerty layout is an annoyance when I use somebody else's computer or somebody else uses mine.

While I don't see myself moving back, I never recommend switching to others.

Re:Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014) on Tuesday September 15, 2020 @06:55PM (#24487672)
I spent hours (dialup) downloading what I thought was powerpoint to work on a school project as a kid and it turned out only to be a viewer. Unfortunately buying MS Office wasn’t in the budget either so I was SOL.

Software in school should at least be gratis, which seems to be happening with google docs et all.

Re:Libtorrent adds support for the WebTorrent protocol on Monday July 13, 2020 @11:49AM (#23822043)
I've experimented with using youtube-dl as a backend before for my own music player. The latency to start is only about 2-3 seconds, slower than "webtorrent --mpv <torrent>" is for video.

You might want to mess around with the piece picker, there's options specifically for streaming. http://libtorrent.org/reference-Core.html#set_piece_deadline

They partnered with local issuing banks (Banco do Brasil, Nubank, and Sicredi) and payment processors (Cielo.)
This is interesting. Right now TSMC seems to provide Taiwan with guaranteed US protection because they are so far ahead technologically. Apple, AMD, and the defense industry have little alternative if they want a cutting edge node. It's unclear how long they will maintain this dominance.

Maybe the long term US-Taiwan ties of factories in the US will make this worth it strategically.

I assume that all R&D will remain in Taiwan. I think this might still be a good move in the long run since it'll give more politicians stake in what happens to Taiwan (Arizona senators, etc).
