Re:Plan Mode Is Dead on Saturday September 26, 2026 @02:00PM (#49858959)
I work on long horizon scientific tasks with expensive computational tools. In that case users are basically asking for the harness to stop and confirm the cost (and plan) before it goes ahead

Re:De-dollarization: Is the US dollar losing its dominance? on Tuesday January 20, 2026 @12:48PM (#46695191)
Curious how HN is using this information to plan your investing approach. Does the typical approach, broad market globally diversified still hold assuming dedollarization?

I'm curious how you are doing multithreaded in the front-end. You're talking about modifying your global state from a web worker?
My team is currently using this and I've been wondering if there are reasons to move to something like jotai or Zustand. The ergonomics of react-hooks-global-state with TS is quite nice already.
This. Along with a global state library of your choice for everything that is not server related data.

How would broad index funds with some bond exposure protect against this?
Interesting ideas. What does such a portfolio construction look like?
So what does the normal working class guy like me do to protect my savings? Currently investing in diversified ETFs doesn't seem to protect me.

Re:Programmers’ emotions on Saturday October 30, 2021 @12:49PM (#29050193)
Really enjoyed this piece. Many of my developper colleagues like to boast that emotions have no place in our field. However this is going against human nature and is in my opinion futile.
I wonder how the younger generation is supposed to plan for the future? Even myself as a 30 year old, I'm finding it very difficult to plan my financial future considering traditional personal finance knowledge can become irrelevant within my working life-time. Anyone have resources to guide my financial decisions taking into consideration these dooms-day scenarios? Index-fund investing seems bound to failure with such scenarios.

Web developer with a background in Chemistry here! Hit me up if you want to discuss Chemistry-related software development :)
Margarine without trans fats is readily available and can be a healthier fat than butter though. But I agree the initial, high trans-fat margarines were bad. Red meat is not very hard to beat in terms of negative health outcomes, so I doubt plant-based meats will be as horrid as the initial margarine put to market.

Re:This week’s dead Google product is Google Trips on Thursday June 06, 2019 @02:18PM (#20117363)
one google Trips feature that I really loved, was it's curated day plans. Basically, each major city in the world had a nice list of day plans per city-district. I followed this guide in Barcelona, Montpellier, Nice, Marseille, New York City, Cannes and it always gave excellent recommendations. Sure it was only the very touristy spots, but it was nice to have a curated day plan for each day I was travelling. If anyone knows of anything similar please comment :)
very cool, I find it's a bit easier to see these with a bit of alcohol
I experienced ego death on a very high dose of pot. I suffered from DP/DR for about three years after. It's not the same. In DP/DR, you feel completely disconnected from your body and "spirit". It's really not a pleasant feeling.

what's the pointy hair reference?
I genuinely like how they implemented loot boxes in Overwatch. It ONLY gives cosmetic items and delivers enough currency that feels like it rewards you for playing.
Overwatch is the only game during my adult life that has given me the same level of enjoyment from video games like when I was a kid.

these are amazing. I've always wanted to take pictures that give off this vibe. Does anyone know what type of postprocessing is required to do this?
