To avoid the android type mess Chromeos is and was always in the iron grip of Google. That is the way to keep things secure. And I am glad it is so. Once you expose important APIs to the main google account - there will be tons of crap ChromeAPPS (not android but the chrome apps) that will be difficult to supervise (i.e) repeat of playstore.

Though painful and slow the aim is to move everything non-google to PlayStore. That way all crap is isolated into android.

For the commandline or linux person, the VM is always there.

Re:Ask HN: Why are there so few fanless laptops with Intel/AMD? on Tuesday April 26, 2022 @04:54AM (#31165342)

I do in fact have that acer swift N6000 bought for €200 - it is perfect for all my tasks (usually CI/CD, ssh) except may be Zoom. It does not allow changing background owing to paltry CPU/GPU. My boss therefore gave me €1000 to get a better device and I cannot find anything silent.

from the ask-hn dept.

One would assume after 10 Gen chipsets, and 10nm or shorter designs large heat sinks would suffice. But most of fanless devices are Celeron/Pentium-M chipsets in Chromebooks or Windows laptops with 4/8GB RAM and eMMC. Is it impossible to passively cool i5, i7 (integrated graphics)? Due to OS needs I cannot go for Apple M1.

I perhaps think MS may sue this site as they are rebundling and making MS lost money.

I still cant believe how people with 6,7 digit salaries get convinced that more money is better than some amount of society responsibility. Dont they think that in 10 or 20 years down the line, many people (including them) will feel the pain of their actions.
