good codification of the commonality between Sarah Paine, David Reich and Ada Palmer
Re:The Language of the Eyes on Friday March 11, 2022 @09:00AM (#30639959)
Interesting to think about the implications of this for people with Asperger's- individuals with Asperger's will often avoid eye contact which means that they're missing out on essential cues.
Re:How to get Confidence when you already have Competence on Thursday March 10, 2022 @11:46AM (#30628988)
TLDW: Like most things, confidence has multiple exit ramps on the highway of life. Conventional confidence advice often says...

1. "To be confident you need to have competence" (Dan Lok)- but if you're reading Hacker News you're probably already playing in the big leagues. So competence isn't your problem.

2. "The world is filled with idiots so you should just be confident" (Alain de Botton). But I do not work with idiots and alot you don't either.

3. "If you're surrounded by people who take away your confidence find better people" (Mel Robbins). But if you've ever made or coded anything, you know that you need criticism.

4. "Confidence is an inside job, you fear the things that aren't real" (Sadhguru/ Brendon Burchard). The 'all in your head' school of thought is cute if you never leave your corporate job but making your own pay check is definitely real.

Re:Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss? on Thursday March 10, 2022 @07:26AM (#30626141)
the blue zone diets are all really interesting because it really makes the point that, while what you eat is important, there are huge variances. Like that Japanese blue zone that eats spam

This nurse here made a youtube video about it, quite good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUa_c7qEgw0

I agree with drinking more water. I used to not do this because I thought it was just some urban myth and the science didn't really seem to back the need for 8 glasses.

But man does it help with weight loss and alertness throughout the day.

Agree with everything this person above said.

Re:Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss? on Thursday March 10, 2022 @07:21AM (#30626100)
some very light intermittent fasting (nothing crazy- I'm talking 14 hours off 12 hours on) has helped me. try to eat a little later in the day and stop eating a little sooner.

also if you can get into walking, I've found that to be the easiest way to lose weight, and if you combine it with a friend or an audio book it can be really enjoyable.

calorie tracking has worked well for me too- the first 2 weeks you should just be getting a sense of how much you're consuming though, don't try to cut right away

Re:The Advantage of No Funding (2011) on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @11:25AM (#30616327)
There's also the worry of having TOO MUCH funding- Chip Wilson (LuLuLemon founder) had this problem with his second company Kit and Ace. They didn't have the same edge that they had when they started LuLu.

The confine of having little to no funding forces you to be agile and creative.

cool will check it out usually good academic writing is an oxymoron
Re:Lessons from a tech job search on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @09:31AM (#30614749)
does that youtuber Tech Lead know what he's talking about? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZ4YPdu0RLo
The economist Richard Thaler is quite good at writing papers that don't make you want to off yourself.

Are there any other examples of good academic writing?

Re:The day Steve Jobs dissed me in a keynote (2010) on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @09:24AM (#30614685)
This book was actually totally worth reading (I mean not on 1x but 2x for sure)
Re:Digital Health Rules on Sunday March 06, 2022 @07:27AM (#30577107)
I liked rule 6 "treat your phone like a book". One thing I did recently was remove the news stories from my google home page. I'd go to search something and then get caught up in some horrific news story. Any advice for people using dating apps? How do you make sure you're using the dating app and not the other way around?
Re:Alex Honnold: The Soloist VR on Friday March 04, 2022 @08:24AM (#30554342)
Herzog doc about honnold would be dope. Honnold actually reminds me of Grizzly Man in alot of ways- in that you root for him but don't totally understand him. Interesting to think about whether Grizzly Man was more or less naive than Honnold- I think that's what makes them different. Honnold knows the risk he's taking, Grizzly Man didn't.
Re:The Marketing Strategy of the top OnlyFans earner on Tuesday January 26, 2021 @03:32PM (#25920705)
Belle Delphine used these 3 marketing techniques to 10x her revenue on OnlyFans: 1. The artist Banksy became popular in a niche and leapfrogged the competition to have 1 of the most expensive paintings ever sold. 2. Supreme limited supply to solidify demand. 3.Jackass polarized people into haters and fans
Re:Bella Thorne, OnlyFans and the battle over monetising content on Wednesday September 02, 2020 @12:14PM (#24354637)
Everyone claims that it was leaked, but both of the sex tapes were timed to come out during the first season of Keeping up with the Kardashians and the first season of The Simple Life.

Life has a lot of coincidences, but the real question is- were they making lemonade from lemons OR is it artificial lemon juice, something that looks like lemons but isn't?

Re:Bella Thorne, OnlyFans and the battle over monetising content on Tuesday September 01, 2020 @04:33PM (#24346730)
There are 2 very different reasons for using OnlyFans. 1. Sex workers are using it to offer a luxury service (The Girlfriend Experience) to clients, virtually. It's taking something that used to be only available to the very wealthy and making it scalable. 2. Celebrities like Bella Thorne, Tana Mongeau and Cardi B are using it as a means of publicity, similar to the sex tape strategy used by Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton.

(There's a good doc about this on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsK_6VSmlMI)
