If someone uses wine, would you be so kind to post here for what programs?

Wine would be interesting for Photoshop due to the GIMP CMYK problems. I run Photoshop on Wine many years ago. I just needed it recently and did not get it to work. I had to use a Virtual Machine.

Could you please elaborate? I had infomaniak email with external (non infomaniak) domain. They don't seem to offer plain email hosting anymore. Please advise.

So whats bad about it?

Screamers anyone? Bladerunner? Natural City? Alien Resurrection?

I take them all!

Why the downvote. To which of the artificial ladies would you say no?

I was told publishers dont promote a good book anymore these days. They ask how many instagram followers do you have?

Maybe the self-publishing and BoD will decline in the long term due to ML white noise and publishers are a sign of quality again.

Re:What Is Dimensional Analysis? on Friday September 15, 2023 @06:38AM (#37521011)
Agreed. A plain number as an answer could give you zero points. It is always UNITS UNITS UNITS. 10 what? Kg? Apples? kW?

I remember actually a chemistry test where I did not use units in an important calculation but only in the answer. If I had used units I would have realized that I totally fucked up. I went belly up. :-(

Dimensional analysis was part of my degree but honestly, I remember little.

How to recover (digitally) when you are out of prison?

This is not a joke. I have been in prison abroad for nearly two years. A total nightmare. I have nearly lost everything. Not made CC payments in 2 years etc. The US embassy was of little help, mainly because I am a dual citizen. Be assured that this is something that will change very soon. Some things would count as torture that I experienced in this prison (I was 5 month without any contact to...

I will re-post later. Please understand that I am still very confused and that I want to keep many things private. And while I understand your curiosity, this is not an AMA.

No, not China. I was imprisoned in a western EU country. The things that happened I had considered impossible in a rule of law country. I am a dual citizen, otherwise it would have been impossible to arrest me. I have family here and I am still in this country. Not in the same federal state but still in the same country. When I was released out of the blue I felt like leaving immediately but after some hours decided to travel to my family. I have 2k USD in cash with me. So no worries. I have a place to sleep for a few days and money. I expect to have a EU CC working within 1 or 2 days. I will fly to the US in 1 month, maybe two. Don't know yet. Everything is difficult. I had a fiancee before I got arrested etc.

Re:Old towns eager for new blood sell Italy homes for $1 on Sunday October 31, 2021 @01:27PM (#29058615)
Well, we all know these houses a in bad shape and require a major investment but I don't think this is a problem.

Fact is, you will create a tax liability there since most of this programs don't only require you to renovate the house, they also expect you to move there. . As much as I love Italy, I would not take the house with 50k USD on top of it for free.

Don't worry. Other countries will follow soon as online work becomes more available and the societies overage more. For some countries a collapse may be unavoidable. Crazy real estate prices? No retirement for you but please pay the retirement for the boomers? Sky high taxes? Good luck!

Re:Lumina Desktop Environment on Sunday October 31, 2021 @11:12AM (#29057538)
This "old version" is alive and well and has been since many many years. It is my daily driver on my laptop and my desktop. It is extremely lightweight, snappy and beautiful.

There is talk of switching to a newer version of Enlightenment since it is getting more stable again.

Re:Lumina Desktop Environment on Sunday October 31, 2021 @07:40AM (#29056275)
Exactly. This is why I use the Moksha Desktop.

Re:Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on Thursday October 21, 2021 @10:24AM (#28944871)
"Thanks Google. Think I’ll be buying this."

Well I wont. I will look for an accumulator replacement for my Pixel one.

700 USD every few years? Quite a bit of money.

Screensize? We had a joke in our (European) high school to tease someone: You shoe size develops like 10, 11, 12, coffin for children, coffin for adults, motorboat... Looks like the same thing is happening to cell phone screens.

"The test for patent-worthiness is: “would it be non-obvious to someone who is skilled in the art?” "

Well, nothing is harder to say than if something is "obvious". Locking backward, basically most things are "obvious".

"someone who is skilled in the art?"

This is another questions. What is "skilled"? Most patent courts assume an average person from the field of the invention and not an extraordinary specialist.

I don't know about the Panama Canal, but the rest is true (mainly UK).

" ... transporting porcelain and whatever other goods China exported at the time."

China exported Silk, porcelain and tea like the is no tomorrow but did not buy anything. At one point China accumulated a huge part of the world silver reserves, sucking liquidity out of the western economy. Opium "solved" this problem.

It was my understanding that the Opium trade was mainly a GB thing. I was not aware that the US was involved.

Re:Are there more surviving ancient writings in Greek or Latin? on Sunday September 26, 2021 @03:41PM (#28663948)
See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quipu

and

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_codices

"Bishop De Landa, a Franciscan monk and conquistador during the Spanish conquest of Yucatán, wrote: "We found a large number of books in these characters and, as they contained nothing in which were not to be seen as superstition and lies of the devil, we burned them all, which they (the Maya) regretted to an amazing degree, and which caused them much affliction." Only three extant codices are widely considered unquestionably authentic."

Not long. Lets assume we lose the ability to manufacture modern IT equipment. How long do we have? Estimated live expectancy of HDD, SDD and tapes?

Most digital data would be lost within 10-20 years. Maybe sooner. We could at least try to pint out wikipedia.

Good idea for the wrong product. Does not make sense to make food out of it, at least not on earth.

The methanol can be used as fuel.

Re:Using RSS to replace social media on Saturday September 25, 2021 @01:44PM (#28654859)
For Twitter I use this Bridge to get RSS

https://github.com/RSS-Bridge/rss-bridge

Just saw, it works also with other websites like youtube. But I have never tried this.

Exactly. And I doubt that this device is used in any lab, except in a clinical lab setting. I have seen it in clinical trials. Focus on the word "arterial blood", this gives you an idea. :-)
Maybe. But maybe you don't know how SBIR grants work. I consider them highly corrupt and I was told by people who got them how they got them and they even advised me, not to waste my time (two person, both hat P1 and P2).

The solicitation was for non-invasive BGM. Of the accepted proposals, nothing came out. Big surprise. At least I got a very high rating for "originality" of our approach.

Doubt it. There are so many issues with any technology regarding non-invasive. Is it still accurate if the individual has a fever? etc. etc. There were at least 50 companies that tried to build such devices, some start-ups had funding in the 50-100 million USD range - and failed. Samsung abandoned it. Apple is rumored to work on it.

Also, without clinical trials you really can't claim this device is reliable. You would also have to compare to real blood glucose and not the finger prick test.

Yes. Basically. This item is available for a lab setting with many fancy options. Cost: 50.000 USD

If 10.000 units of a customized simple version are ordered, the cost is 500 USD, give or take a few hundred dollars. This was not my estimate, this was the quote given by a company.

non-invasive. Any investors here? I could offer non-invasive blood pressure monitoring (no, not based on pulse wave velocity).
"A few times every year, there's a ton of hype about some new noninvasive device, and the newbies get a bit worried, but the old timers just shrug it off"

This.

But a buddy of mine may surprise you soon. And I worked in the field too.
