News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

It's depressing that this is so out in the open, and it seems like there's nothing America can do to defend itself.
I've had multiple math professors tell me to study as much math as I can while I'm young, because once you're over 30 it's a lot harder to learn math. I'm in my 20's so I'm not sure if this is true.

It also seems to me that the math you would learn in an O'Reilly book isn't in depth enough to contribute to research.

Re:Why RIM is no Nortel on Thursday June 23, 2011 @12:15PM (#2688430)
The Blackberry does have some advantages over other consumer smart phones. RIM's built a lot of infrastructure for dealing with corporate clients and security. It's probably going to be a long time before the president of the United States switches from a Blackberry.

Looks like buying the puts was a bad idea
My favourite quote: "I always have a role for talented people." "What role? Who the F knows."

Re:L - the Little Language on Top of Tcl/Tk on Friday October 08, 2010 @05:22PM (#1773446)
Might be a bit late for this, but it's a real bitch to google help for a programming language with a name like 'L'.

That's what I learned from 'R' anyways.

Re:Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (October 2010 Edition) on Friday October 01, 2010 @05:21PM (#1748807)
Holy crap, what is the story behind making a start up in Yellowknife?
Re:Ask HN: Choice of (romantic) partner - big impact? on Tuesday August 24, 2010 @01:37PM (#1630479)
Some people may interpret your words in any way that can start a conflict, but I agree with what I think you intended to say. Of course there are plenty of women capable of handling mathematical and technical discussions, but even so, in a romantic relationship people relate to each other at an emotional level.
Re:Ask HN: How do I turn 100K into 1 million? on Friday June 25, 2010 @02:28PM (#1461617)
Well then for starters maybe you should spend some of that money on life insurance.
causation vs. correlation
Re:8.75 Pieces of Highly Pragmatic Startup Start'n Gold on Friday April 23, 2010 @04:54PM (#1289447)
unrelated to the article's contents; this page's bright green background absolutely made my eyes burn while trying to read the article.
Re:NBC's broken Olympic coverage on Tuesday February 23, 2010 @02:00PM (#1146087)

Re:Times Higher Education 2009: Top 200 World Universities on Friday October 09, 2009 @04:49PM (#872419)
Yeah, no school spirit, and how does U of T lose marks on international students? I don't really see how the student population could be more diverse.
Re:Statistics and Computer Science on Friday September 04, 2009 @05:03PM (#805704)
I'm in the same boat, I graduated with a computer degree but I didn't learn much about stats. Since then I've gone back to take part time courses to catch up. I find it really interesting and useful. I wish my school made stats a part of the required curriculum.
Does anyone have an opinion on the best visualization tool?

Re:Ask HN: What happens when a founder gets divorced? on Tuesday September 01, 2009 @01:38PM (#798448)
The ex gets access half of the founder's equity, but a good incorporation (or shareholder's?) contract will allow the other partners to buy out the wife's shares before she can actually become a "partner" in the company.
Re:How A Forum Site Grew Monthly Revenue From $400 to $400,000 on Tuesday September 01, 2009 @12:59PM (#798362)

Re:America's unjust sex laws on Friday August 28, 2009 @03:45PM (#792118)
I don't think sex offenders are being punished too much, it's just America's definition of sex offender that goes too far.
Re:America's unjust sex laws on Friday August 28, 2009 @03:45PM (#792117)
Here here, how did this get to the top of HackerNews? Maybe the whole California kidnapper put this back in peoples minds.
Re:Downturn Dims Prospects Even at Top Law Schools on Thursday August 27, 2009 @01:54PM (#789649)
I can't say this is necessarily a bad thing.
Re:A Tale of Two $100,000 Jobs — A Tale of Two Americas on Thursday August 27, 2009 @01:18PM (#789582)
I can't believe a teacher can make more than 100k a year plus pension for working 8:15-3:15 9 months a year.
