News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I know this is a long shot but I’m gonna try asking anyway because it has been eating away at me.

I remember seeing a website with the same concept as what the OP has done but with gorillas. It was during the early HTML5 and web socket days and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

I tried googling for it but nothing came up. Appreciate if anyone can give me a lead.

Tried demo but all I got was "I'm sorry, I can't quite catch that".
The demo video makes me feel dizzy. Easy on the bounce.
Re:I regret my website redesign on Friday July 22, 2022 @01:41AM (#32188912)
Plenty of comments calling out the design as "worse".

Bottomline: "But despite all the missteps and stress, the results might justify all the pain. I expected the new website to increase sales by 10-20%, but it’s been closer to 40%."

Re:JavaScript Obfuscation Techniques by Example on Monday July 18, 2022 @05:05AM (#32136102)
I can imagine obfuscation as a useful thing for Chrome extensions where, in some cases, your business logic cannot exist on server.

Are you using any AI writing tool or just accessing the openai API directly?

Do you have an email that I can contact you? I run a headphones magazine, Headphonesty and I will love to publish an article on this topic.

Bought Youtube Premium and have no regrets paying for a platform that taught me so much.

I once let the Premium lapsed and was bombarded by aggressive ads. Immediately turned Premium back on and it was almost, I kid you not, zen-like.

The "defmarco" blog post is gold. I appreciate that he put it a quick bullet format, rather than a long fleshed-out ebook.

Most of the rules actually applies across all types of roles and not just a engineering one.

Gonna print this one out and nailed it on my desk.

Any chance we get to see that book? I constantly trying to improve my company process (we are small, < 10 people) and I like to see how others are handling operation.
Re:A practical guide to securing Google Workspace for a startup on Saturday February 26, 2022 @01:14AM (#30475555)
I was hoping that there will be something in the guide for session hijacking.

I recently seen many youtubers having their channel hijacked due to hackers taking over their Google account.

How do you train cats? I thought they are the king of the house!
Some tips to improve the readability:

- Give more line-height between each bullet point. - You use white for time and blue for unvisit links. The contrast for the time is stronger than the link, resulting in more reading effort. Change up the contrast to focus where you want the reader to look at easily

Notice how these mentioned Asian countries are countered that focus on academics.

I'm a Singaporean and we spent alot of time in our younger years straining our eyes on books and computers.

Re:Ask HN: How do you get out of a rut? on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @06:50AM (#30084400)
I was literally in a rut a few days ago. Super lethargic. Didn't want to reply to email, didn't want to make plans for the business...

Then I started surfing amazon books because, you know, anything to procrastinate working.

I came across one of Tim grover's book (Michael Jordan' trainer) and I downloaded the sample to read.

It's a little OOT but something he said rang a bell. He talk about humans overthinking especially in tough situation and gave a pep talk on being relentless. My takeway was "don't think, just do". Suppress the negative voice and just work on it. Nothing is easy. If you want something bad enough, don't think. Just do it.

I think it triggers my inner motivation on why I started my business and being hyper aware of the negative self talk.

So I put myself in robot mode and just started doing things.

I'm not sure how this is healthy for my mental health but it worked.

Nothing to do with the IDE but I just want to point out that the homepage design is sick. The 3D space in the background did not affect the scroll performance and it adds a really good vibe without affecting the UX. Love it!
Read this book called Profit First by mike michalowicz. This saved me so much time from agonizing on what to do with my money every month.

Since you are based in US, the advice there will fit you better. I'm based in Singapore so advice like taking yearly dividend from the company is not feasible for me.

[Public Service Announcement] For anyone using Wordpress Plugin – Elementor

I noticed a weird transaction while consolidating my bank account this morning.A WP plugin Elementor has been charging me for two years - 2020 and 2021.I first bought the plugin in 2019 but I turned off the auto-renewal and removed my CC details. So no way I can be charged any further.Or so I thought.I ping their Customer Service immediately for clarification. They admitted that it should not...

Your website (axiom) needs to be better mobile-optimized. Elements be cut off by other elements. Irregular spacing, etc.

Doesn't look like a VC-backed app right now.

Compared to DK website, his looks way way more polished.

Just my two cents.

I think Sahil brought up a great point with talent hiring in a competitive space (tech) that I found to be repeatedly true - flexibility. Autonomy is a helluva drug.

Now that I already have a Step 1 business that I'm surviving on. I'm looking to move up to Step 2 or 3.

I have been reading up a lot on customer acquisition especially from 0 - 100 and also tweeting abt it (https://twitter.com/p0larboy). If anyone has a good resource on this, please let me know.

If you just want to write and could care less about ownership of content, pick Medium.

A plumber open shop in a highly competitive neighborhood with thousands of other plumbers right at the customers' fingertip.

He is highly-skilled, or at least he believes himself to be.

But he doesn't believe in marketing. "Marketers are bottom-feeders."

Said plumber did not do well. Blame everyone except his ego.

Submitted one of my first few article for my web dev blog, colintoh.com, many years back. It hit the front page and it really encourages me to write more until I didn't. Nowadays, the blog is used as both a personal dev resource and a resume.
Re:How to get your first 100k active users on Wednesday December 13, 2017 @01:19AM (#15912430)
Hey Anne, my qns is with regards to getting a forum started.

I see that Winnie have great topics discussion with questions asked and answered by users.

For a new forum, there are bound to be empty-room syndromes.

How did you guys manage to kickstart discussions in the beginning? Is it all organic or is there some growth hack involved?

This qns have been bothering me a while and I can't seem to get any good readings anywhere else.
