Re:It's time to dispel the myths about nuclear power on Tuesday April 12, 2016 @03:48PM (#11482935)
Has anyone done any research on how much 'energy' is stored in wind currents? How many wind turbines can we erect before we affect the climate by disrupting air currents?
I haven't seen this approach before, and I like the idea of it. Dunno if it fits for all goals though. Would it be effective if you just measured total hours?
Re:Race Is on to Deliver Internet from Space on Wednesday February 17, 2016 @02:16PM (#11120401)
Has anyone figured out how to deal with the issue of latency for space-based internet? Things like online games and video calls will just not work if the traffic hits space. I could see an ISP offering a service where traffic that needs low latency gets routed on land, while web pages and the like get routed through space. At a cost, of course.
For retro gaming, also look at the OpenPandora and its soon-to-be successor Pyra.

Re:21.co Bitcoin Computer Now on Sale on Monday November 16, 2015 @12:58PM (#10575878)
Says it comes with a 128 GB SD card with the current blockchain. How long until a copy of the full blockchain is > 128 GB?
Re:New Initiatives for Lyft Drivers on Thursday October 08, 2015 @03:50PM (#10355610)
I wonder if there's any data on accidents/ traffic violations between the two companies. Tips are supposed to be for better service, and with driving the only way to provide better service is to be faster. My hypothesis would be that in attempts to be faster, drivers may be driving more dangerously, thus increasing accidents and/or traffic violations.
Re:CS Unplugged: Computer Science Without a Computer on Friday September 04, 2015 @02:30PM (#10172080)
Your comment made me stop and think about all the times I've seen someone complain about 'coding' on a whiteboard during interviews. Did those people learn 'computer science' entirely in front of a computer, and so sort of 'trial and errored' they're way to the correct answer? Not trying to claim one way is better than the other, but rather trying to understand why the argument over coding in interviews is so polarized.

What's the possibility someone brute forced his private key?
Re:Creatures – A simple evolution simulator on Monday June 15, 2015 @03:44PM (#9721537)

Similar evolution simulator with more complex 'physical' phenotypes.

Reminded me of a Peter Thiel quote reference in [0]: 'We wanted flying cars and instead we got 140 characters.'

Flying cars were a means to an end; we got a similar end, we just found a different means.

Re:Is the Berlin Airport ready yet? on Thursday June 04, 2015 @11:48AM (#9660063)
I'd be interested to see the opposite of this... a list of high-profile projects that were under budget. Or at least minimally over budget.

Microservices: here be dragons.
Re:The DragonBox Pyra is Nearing Completion on Thursday April 30, 2015 @01:16PM (#9466325)
I've been following this project for five or six years now. Fascinating stuff that EvilDragon has been doing, and his determination and perseverance is admirable. (CircuitCo, who makes BeagleBoards, screwed ED/Craig out of 200k euro...)
Re:A Math Problem from Singapore Goes Viral on Tuesday April 14, 2015 @03:19PM (#9376619)
I'd like to see the data on this, or a variation.

First variation is with the candidates ability to solve the problem. Like you said, Microsoft and Google seem to have determined there's no correlation between that and job performance.

Second variation is with a panel of interviewers who propose the problem. Based on how the candidate responds, the panel chooses whether to 'hire' the candidate, based on their ability to reason about the problem and communicate, rather than on their ability to solve it.

I wonder if there's a correlation between the yes/no of the interviewers and the candidate's job performance.

Re:A Math Problem from Singapore Goes Viral on Tuesday April 14, 2015 @01:48PM (#9376005)
But do you want your new employee to choke as soon as they see a new problem? To me, being able to solve the problem doesn't reveal anything; however, how they handle the problem can. I think its about context and what information you're trying to glean.
Re:F***ing Learn to Code Again (1999) on Monday March 23, 2015 @01:05PM (#9251957)
96k. Think about that for a sec. Most big name games for PC are ~10GB these days... 100,000x as big as .kkrieger.
Hopefully the article doesn't fall prey to exactly what it discusses.
Re:Usernames Are Dying – Here Is the Replacement on Wednesday December 10, 2014 @12:00PM (#8730177)
Personally I don't want to give away my cell number as a piece of identifying information.
Re:Nerd Attention Deficit Disorder on Thursday December 04, 2014 @04:58PM (#8701934)
Read through the article and found myself nodding in agreement with a lot of the points. Read the first comment. The commentor mentions adding 512MB of RAM to his.. wait WHAT? 512MB? Oh the comment is from 11 years ago... the post was written in 2003...

If the internet of '03 could be described as 'rapid-fire content,' what can possibly describe the internet of today?

Re:Hacking PayPal Accounts with one click on Wednesday December 03, 2014 @04:43PM (#8696497)
Security is hard. I think the more important thing here is that Paypal fixed it quickly and honored the bug bounty. I'd be more worried if they tried to shove it under the rug.

Can someone tl;dw this for me?
Re:Time to change on Wednesday November 05, 2014 @04:43PM (#8564451)
Most salient point, IMO: "Don't waste time. Don't waste it."

I have plenty of time to do the things I want to do, but most of the time I just don't have the motivation to get started and just do it. It's easier to watch TV or play games than to exercise your brain learning something new. 'I don't have time' is an excuse.

Re:Time Warner Cable to Upgrade to 300Mbps Down/20Mbps Up on Monday October 13, 2014 @04:57PM (#8450624)
Why are up speeds so abysmal? Is it a problem with infrastructure, or is it throttling because they think most uses for upload is illegal?
Re:How valuable was your high school education? on Thursday October 09, 2014 @01:29PM (#8433828)
I think this is a very good idea. Anecdotally, I've had many people complain about having to do things they 'didn't learn in school.' But with any good idea, it's about execution. How do you build your user base, etc.
Yeah the phrase '...the US government's legal right to control encryption' disturbs me.
I've censored things I've wanted to say, but usually out of wanting to be a decent human being rather than any particular fear of the US government. On the flipside, there are things I have said that make me wonder if they'd alert various intelligence agencies or put me on a list.
