Hey neat! I use Nibabel in my work! Small world. :>

You might be interested in the concept of the relationship escalator, then.

(Disclaimer: I'm not poly, but I really like how poly folk interrogate relationship norms. Don't be scared off by the poly blog!)

(Off-topic tangent here, sorry.)

I have an ASD diagnosis. This is the first I've heard of "condition". Neat! Is this to move away from "disorder" because of stigma/negative connotation?

I'm really sorry for this off-topic reply, but... is that a useful article from Goop of all places? ...What? Huh.

I see this article more as a resource for curious people who want to improve their interpersonal skills and provide more helpful feedback. (I especially feel this way based on the author's blog, and their activity on Twitter! They create a lot of kind, supportive, educational material.) I _don't_ see this as a prescriptive piece trying to impose constraints on other people's behavior. If the specific advice doesn't resonate with you, then that's okay!

Re:Data science is different now on Thursday February 14, 2019 @05:58PM (#19166894)
4th year EE undegraduate student here, taking both "Data Analysis/Pattern Rec" and "Computer Vision" electives this term. My early courses prepared me more for a path focused in circuit design, but I jumped ship through exposure to wonderful, wonderful DSP. A lot of what I'm learning now is very new to me, so, I appreciate comments like yours that give a sense of potential gaps in my learning. Thank you.

I'm currently working on an assignment for CV in which we extract Histogram of Oriented Gradient features from the CIFAR-10 dataset using python, then use them to train one of three classifiers (SVM, Gaussian Naive Bayes, Logistic Regression). I had asked about preprocessing, but was told it was outside the scope of this assignment, so we're just using the dataset as-is. :(

The nice bit is, I have a research internship coming up in a lab that will have me working on actual datasets, rather than toy examples. And, there's a data science club on campus that has an explicit focus on cleaning data which I plan on regularly attending. So... hopefully I'm on the right track!

I'm not sure I understand the leap from "I don't like taxing people excessively because they have more" to "I don't like the middle class being taxed."

Doesn't the "because they have more" bit exclude the middle class by definition? If the taxman comes for me, then we're no longer following the initial plan.

If you're suggesting that a country will run out of wealthy people to tax... I'm not sure how that would work logistically. Is that a thing that could happen?

>The problem is that a lot of the original 4chan users either moved on or just grew up and at the same time 4chan got over taken by alt-light type folks.

This is relatable. I was a pretty notable figure on /mu/ for a few years, and my tripfriends WERE my social circle when high school couldn't do that for me. Then I went to college and realized how much toxicity it had instilled in me, and moved on.

It's interesting to reflect on that bit of my teenage years!

Ask HN: What lessons were most valuable to you as a new grad in the tech sector?

In about a year and a half, I'll have my B.Eng in EE (w/ focus on MATLAB/Python-based DSP/AI courses, and co-op work terms incl. a research internship in a computer vision lab). I'd like to think I've got at least a little self-awareness -- what I've learned in the bubble of academia probably isn't all that reflective of what things will be like once I'm working with a degree under my belt. ...

Yes! I'm so glad you took the time to acknowledge that your personal lived experiences aren't necessarily representative of the experiences and perspectives of office employees as a who-

Oh. Erm... I hate to break it to you, but a lot of us _do_ prefer this!
