Re:Protecting My Attention at the Dopamine Carnival on Tuesday July 15, 2025 @05:43PM (#44576123)
It was directly from the study that I had linked. I was complimenting them.
I use the following stack:

1. Caret (https://caret.io/) for taking notes. It's a simple Markdown note taker with some really nice features. It outputs plain .md files and works with folder.

2. All my Markdown file are in a folder synced on Dropbox.

3. I use a custom Alfred workflow which uses riggrep to search very quickly through the notes.

One thing to mention is that I want my stack to be private, so this doesn't publish anything to the web but it does sync.

The best relationship advice guide is here in my opinion: https://markmanson.net/relationship-advice

If not for the tactical advice inside of the article, it's a launching pad for other resources to dive into (such as the 5 language of love).

Am I the only one getting a laugh out of this? I also tried it on myself and the result was funny.
Re:Facebook bug 'kills' users in 'terrible error' on Saturday November 12, 2016 @11:08PM (#12941807)
When someone on Facebook dies, you can memoralize their account. The check the determined whether or not an account is memoralized failed.
Re:Ask HN: Who's looking for a cofounder? on Sunday June 28, 2015 @10:48PM (#9796165)
I'm building an online community of rappers, lyricists, and producers to write and share rap songs, collaborate, learn how to freestyle, improve their craft, etc.

Tech + creative tools (natural language processing, lyrical analysis, etc.) + community = best place to get better at making hip hop.

http://www.rappad.co

This is a side project for me, but it's been going pretty well recently and I've gotten excited about it. I'm looking for anyone that would like to help.

It is built with Rails.

Cached version, as the site is having trouble loading for me.

Re:Show HN: Twenty on Wednesday May 13, 2015 @11:23PM (#9543281)
Awesome!

1. Love the tutorial, super simple and I loved how you introduced harder concepts like linking blocks later on. 2. The objective is clear and challenging right from the get-go, as opposed to introducing levels, the game just naturally kind of gets harder. 3. After introducing the timer that's when I was like "oh shit just got real" and I felt that pressure made it more fun

You think you've done a bunch of things right here. Nice work.

Re:Gradual type checking for Ruby on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @11:39PM (#9345684)
I've been writing Ruby for a few years on a number of production applications.

Recently I've had to pickup Hack for work, and if there's one thing I really like about it is the type hinting. The best part is that it helps you handle nullable types (not sure if it's done here).

When I switch back to Ruby from Hack, I find it harder to reason about my program.

Re:Nuclide: An open-source IDE for React Native on Thursday March 26, 2015 @09:11PM (#9274234)
I guess all modern IDEs can be considered unified at this point, but the idea is that all the tools and integrations are part of it - including the build process, typechecker, etc.

Before you would have to run all these in the background + have your IDE open (ie. Sublime Text).

Of course Sublime Text has plugins itself now too, but you get the idea.

Re:Why I don’t like hackathons on Friday November 28, 2014 @12:45PM (#8671592)
I think another important point is that Hackathons are what you make it.

I like going to them to meet new people and try out a new idea. If I want to fall asleep, I can. I'm not "forced" into doing anything I don't want to do.

I usually work 14 hours or so, go to sleep, wake up, shower, then work again - doing this for 2 or 3 days hardly makes me feel like crap or messes with my sleep schedule.

Re:Write every day on Monday September 22, 2014 @11:34AM (#8350974)
I've read similar posts about writing everyday, and I decided to pick it up a little over a year ago.

I quickly realized that as a student my day's were simply not that interesting and my entries looked more and more like "went to school. studied. went home. slept."

Instead I started writing every week.

This is much more manageable and forces you to take time to reflect on your life. I look forward to writing every week.

I now have the last year of my life documented in these entries (by the way, I create a filter and email them to myself with the subject line Write: MM/DD/YYYY) and it's SO rewarding to go back and read them. It really doesn't take that long - maybe less than 30 minutes per entry.

I would highly recommend it.

Re:Bypass t.co, go straight to real links on Twitter on Tuesday July 22, 2014 @06:45PM (#8072018)
What's the value of this?
I agree - I use Reddit and I was still confused for a little while. I ended up finding another site [0] that did a similar thing and they explained it well.

"monitor all new comments, submission titles and self-texts posted to reddit for a word or phrase."

Re:Counting Syllables and Detecting Rhyme in PHP (2012) on Sunday June 29, 2014 @05:52PM (#7962599)
If anyone is interested in detecting rhymes in lyrics, I built a lyric visualizer + analyzer a while ago.

http://www.rappad.co/blueprints/1064

It goes a couple steps further to try to use the information to determine a "lyrical grade" of how poetic the song is.

I was surprised that HBO allows you to watch the episode on YouTube. For those that haven't seen it, I think it's really good satire.

Re:Orders projected to begin shipping 4/21 on Tuesday April 08, 2014 @08:11PM (#7556889)
I've been watching Soylent for a while now, including following the different home-brew recipes[1].

The verdict is still out on whether you can actually live off this stuff. If you're curious about the experience, there have been a number of journalists who have gone on the stuff for a short period and wrote about it. [2][3].

EDIT: To clarify, there haven't been any long-term studies that I found on living off a nutritional shake like this and the effect that it has on your overall health. It's akin to the same stuff they feed people who won't/cannot feed themselves[4] except a lot cheaper and (hopefully) tastes better.

Neat concept, I rather enjoy the website design. However when I'm looking for reaction gif, I use the album I've bookmarked on IMGUR which is already hand curated by Reddit.

Wow, HackerRank is amazing! Can't believe I've just heard of this -- I literally was going to build the same idea (with the same name) at a hackathon. I just wish they had more challenges in Javascript/Ruby.

In general I think the list is really great.

Re:7 Sins of Doomed Teams on Monday November 04, 2013 @10:48PM (#6673114)
I disagree. I actually really liked it. It was concise and the seven sins format made it actually easier to remember in order to catch yourself committing one.
Re:Create a font from your own handwriting on Thursday August 08, 2013 @01:00PM (#6180197)
A little while I go I did this in HTML and Javascript, it won't let you extract a .ttf but the basic idea is there. http://fontsie.herokuapp.com/
There should be an automated button for this: "hug"
Re:Is it too late to be awesome? on Wednesday June 26, 2013 @11:31PM (#5950599)
As a university student I'm surrounded by brilliant people, a lot of whom excel in academics. This has always been really frustrating for me.

I think the takeaway message I've learned from school, and in life, is that there will always be someone who is better than you at something. I'm always envious of my peers who are better at (X), and I forget that if I reflect on my own skills, I'll find (Y) that I can do better.

You'll likely never find someone who is better than you at EVERYTHING.

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. I think there's a certain beauty in that, because by working together, we get the benefit of being good at X and Y. This is why cofounders who have complementing skill sets are so successful.

Find something you like, and just do it. Connect with people that do things you don't like to do or are not as good at. The rest will fall in place.

Re:Show HN: Rappad - Write better lyrics on Wednesday April 10, 2013 @10:40PM (#5529643)
Yeah, my bad. It's been mentioned before, but the landing page video is completely irrelevant, it's really just a placeholder. I don't know what other video to put there, maybe one day I can pay someone to make a tutorial vid.
