Re:Google Home (in)Security on Tuesday October 30, 2018 @06:07PM (#18341693)
Wish I was clever enough to figure this stuff out.
I read the title and immediately thought: 'duh!'
Re:Ask HN: What paywalled content do you pay for? on Friday October 26, 2018 @04:48PM (#18312601)
Netflix, Amazon prime.
Iron Bru and Inca Cola whilst being orange and yellow respectively actually tasted pretty much the same.
Re:Ask HN: What are you favorite tiny tools? on Monday October 15, 2018 @04:53PM (#18223640)
Sounds like autohotkey.
Re:The true power of regular expressions (2012) on Sunday October 14, 2018 @02:04PM (#18214173)
My takeaway from this, since the majority of it went over my head: I can continue to parse HTML with regular expressions.
That's what I thought. Just like making sure the phone doesn't connect to the internet so it can't be remotely wiped. I don't own an iPhone so I might be wrong but can't the cop just tape over the camera/sensor?
Just out of interest because I've never thought of this before. Would this protect the content from the heat of a good going fire?
Re:What to do during break from work? on Thursday October 11, 2018 @01:10PM (#18195215)
Just started an office job, I go to the gym. Brilliant way of switching off from work.

Re:What Made Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem Hard to Prove on Monday October 01, 2018 @03:24PM (#18115941)
I felt like the article was just getting going, then it finished.
Re:UK Surveillance Regime Violated Human Rights on Friday September 28, 2018 @05:51PM (#18097353)
There's no accused person.

If it were illegal it wouldn't be in place, full stop. This is the crown prosecution service, what ever you may or may not think of them, their procedures have to be legal. If a procedure that is in place is challenged in a court and found by the court to be illegal then fine, it gets changed. But those following said procedure beforehand are not breaking the law and are acting in good faith.

But data retention isset in law (at the time under the 1998 act, and now the gdpr and 2018 act) and the cps follows those laws like everyone else must. Their procedures follow these laws.

Re:UK Surveillance Regime Violated Human Rights on Friday September 28, 2018 @11:21AM (#18094111)
Oh dear.

'Could be' and 'are' are two different things.

Where's your actual evidence they are illegal? You don't have any.

What reason do you have to assume this procedure is illegal? Other than some kind of irrelevant association with the surveillance program of a different part of the government proving to be illegal.

I'll gladly accept the procedure is illegal provided with proof it is, so... over to you.

Re:UK Surveillance Regime Violated Human Rights on Thursday September 27, 2018 @03:38PM (#18087870)
But they're not illegal so the point is moot. Also illegality does not mean jail. The severity of an illegal action dictates that.
Re:UK Surveillance Regime Violated Human Rights on Tuesday September 25, 2018 @05:18PM (#18070561)
And also no reason to expect their procedures to be illegal either. True enough about the surveillance, but the two things aren't connected, just because one procedure was illegal doesn't make all government procedures illegal.
Re:UK Surveillance Regime Violated Human Rights on Tuesday September 25, 2018 @01:15PM (#18068289)
To be fair I don't think deleting emails in accordance with their procedures is a crime. And that being the case why would anyone go to jail?
Lack of backbone, cowardly backstabbing behaviour, condescending opinion of all the people he managed. He was a bully and oppressive. He was of the opinion he would progress if he disciplined someone so he was always trying to screw someone over.

On the flip side I'm now untouchable as far covering my own ass when it comes to these wankers.

Re:Ask HN: What convinced you to apply for the current job and why? on Wednesday September 19, 2018 @03:02PM (#18026797)
The job, no provable skills.

The department within that job a better work/life balance and an actual interest in what it does.

Re:Firefox Reality Now Available on Wednesday September 19, 2018 @07:58AM (#18023527)
Is this just another Firefox OS? It strikes me as another side project they'll abandon later.

I can understand Firefox OS, I wish they'd persevered, but I don't really get this.

On its own I don't think this makes sense. Maybe in the context of an in game browser.

But then who am I to comment.

Re:Ask HN: What made your favorite manager/supervisor/CEO so great? on Wednesday September 19, 2018 @01:19AM (#18021865)
Letting me get on with my job, no micro-managing; trust really.

Knowing they had my back if the shit hit the fan.

I've only experienced this once unfortunately.

Re:Ask HN: Which book(s) did you read this summer? on Sunday September 16, 2018 @02:00PM (#18000148)
Well worth it. It's a long slog. I've never read anything on this scope before. There are so many characters and story lines I can't imagine how the author kept track! Brilliant series, nothing else like it.
Netflix is paying an ISP to be connected to the internet. The Netflix user is paying an ISP to be connected to the internet.

Now the ISPs want paid again to provide the service they're already being paid to provide at both ends of the pipe, to make sure the pipe works properly? Extortion plain and simple.

Best analogy I've seen so far. Wonder if it could be improved by substituting an ISP instead of Netflix.
Re:Ask HN: Which book(s) did you read this summer? on Saturday September 15, 2018 @09:34AM (#17994234)
Just finishing up Malazan book of the fallen series.
Re:Ask HN: How do you organize your home directory? on Friday September 14, 2018 @09:05AM (#17986889)
I have my 'home directory' on a separate drive to the system drive which I simlink to from the home directory in the system drive. It means I can install OS's anytime without touching my files. I symlink to some dot files too. Once I learn bash better I will automate it like I have with reinstalling all my favourite programs.
Reference statements the solution is simply to write out the statement and sign it physically, keep the original, and provide copies.

I think technologies like deep fake may affect things like CCTV evidence, especially if it's veracity is thrown into doubt. I can see courts, where I live, having a hard time with this as currently CCTV evidence is treated as a truthful and objective account of people's actions beyond reproach.
