like $100
I would pay for a foss paperless ngx fork with support for running in a readonly filesystem of arbitrary file structure, and giving me full text search with ocr for images, pdfs, and ideally descriptions of video files

Ask HN: People who joined a company hoping to fix/add features, how did it go?

Whether joining a certain company or team within a company with the express purpose of fixing that one bug which annoyed you in your everyday use of a product, or if you really wanted for a product to add a certain feature. You finally joined that team. How did it go? Were you able to do what you wanted? If not, did you finally understand why it's not a priority and do you agree with it?

In your example you end up with "Hi ," instead of "Hi," if there is no name matched
Re:Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal on Tuesday April 05, 2022 @01:20PM (#30921869)
Wanted to give it a shot but got disappointed when I launched it and the following happened:

- Outgoing request to googleapis.com

- Outgoing request to segment.io

- Outgoing request to sentry.io

- Requires sign up (only via Github, mind you)

I understand the first request is probably to get some dynamic configuration, even though I'd rather my terminal ship with static configuration. But then you have segment and sentry: not interested in sending telemetry from my terminal. Finally having user accounts for a terminal is such as strange concept.

I really wanted to like it, too. The screenshots look great

tiny tiny rss because nothing comes close to it for plugins
Apple can also silently create a stealthy virtual device that will get all messages as your phone does

People like you are the reason for impostor syndromes
been hosting it for years and it has been stable
Or even better, buy it on a separate retailer, like Amazon, and then sign up with a made-up name
Re:Ask HN: What RSS Reader do you use? on Thursday October 01, 2020 @11:41PM (#24658595)
I use tt-rss as my backend with the fever emulation plugin. I use Reeder on my mac and iphone, and News+ on my android
Check out the MacRumors Buyer's Guide [1]. It has the number of days between releases for most products.

I also have astigmatism which makes all dark mode websites and apps difficult to read. As "cool" as this trend and previously "hacker" color scheme has gotten, don't remove light modes!
Re:Ask HN: Why do VoIP vendors hate their customers? on Tuesday August 11, 2020 @12:49AM (#24117262)
My first turn off when I wanted to do this was how I couldn't use the phone number in most websites/app because they checked it for being a "virtual number" and other names.

I've had some of this with my google voice number too but it has gotten much better recently (before I couldn't even use it with Signal), however I'm not sure what the state of using twilio for this is.

Re:Tell HN: YouTube fixed the dot after domain ad bypass on Saturday June 20, 2020 @04:00AM (#23582538)
To be fair this was raised on reddit and that post became so popular The Verge made an article about it.
Did they really have to choose a logo that's so similar to competitors? https://i.imgur.com/JGwS1V1.png
Very interesting. Why wouldn't I use this for normal web apps if I want to keep my react code server side instead?
Could you share the channel with us?

I do the same and to avoid this I'll abbreviate the name or use initials, just enough for it to be pronounced differently from the company name
Oh my, I just noticed that. Please tell me it can go away
Not gonna lie I wish we kept politics out of software

Seems odd to me that they would encourage allowing 3rd party sites to read all your email, but I guess this is where we're at right now
