Re:A Woman with the Seven Second Memory [video] on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @11:28AM (#48833230)
Wondering what kind of activities would be best suited under this condition, maybe even to an advantange. I mean, instead of giving an interview to a journalist, where one needs a minimum short-term memory length, a different kind of interaction where the 7-second memory doesn't get in the way.

Also, if there is anything learned from "caching" (computing) that would be useful to those dealing with this condition: this case is not about speeding up external memory access (as in a CPU), but about replacing fast-access memory with slow-access, kind of the opposite direction.

And also, of course, yes, you're not the first one to wonder if there's a "recently developed" tool that would make Junko Mizuta's life better. https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1u2494l/woman_that...

Re:I'm addicted to being useful on Tuesday January 20, 2026 @08:22AM (#46691560)
I'm probably your wife.

It could be related to the personality trait of how much of our world model is "in our mind" vs "out there":

If I speak with you while working on the world model in my mind, it looks like I just "want to be heard". But your feedback is actually very important, it's just that it should only feed my mental world model.

I am then surprised that my math coprocessor reaches for the GPIO.

Not as described. But I would appreciate a connection with certain brands that have helped me solve a problem in the past. I wish I could go to the same shop and tell them "this was the solution back then, give me the latest iteration". For example: Moto G phone, Brother laser printer, Gap jeans, Geox cordless shoes. Don't waste any money trying to sell to me, just tell me what you have when I need to replace the previous one.

No Sonic Pi, which is a Ruby dialect?
Re:No Graphics API on Tuesday December 16, 2025 @03:08PM (#46293716)
The article is missing this motivation paragraph, taken from the blog index:

> Graphics APIs and shader languages have significantly increased in complexity over the past decade. It’s time to start discussing how to strip down the abstractions to simplify development, improve performance, and prepare for future GPU workloads.

Re:This is not the future on Tuesday December 16, 2025 @11:34AM (#46290647)
For any pleasurable activity, there's always somebody taking it too far.
It is all about Christmas and New Year: cooking good healthy food for the extended family, and new year's resolutions.

Re:Cognitive and Mental Health Correlates of Short-Form Video Use on Wednesday November 19, 2025 @08:03PM (#45987469)
I was surprised that the podcast Stuff You Should Know now advertises a short firm video provider, but I couldn't explain exactly why. Maybe this sheds some light on my concerns.
As a player: What's the lag? Does it depend on the game and the gesture?

As a developer: I'd like to implement a "game" which would be ideal for Dynamicland (tens of cards with ID stickers on the corners), but this might be a simpler platform to set up and use. Would that be possible with the board as sold?

Re:The Counterclockwise Experiment on Sunday September 21, 2025 @10:07PM (#45328445)
Reminds me of the recent Hacker News post about playing 90s TV just to relive the experience of sitting down in front of it and watch whatever was on.

Mice/mouses and fish/fishes are distinguished by whether they are homogeneous sets or not.
Re:CERN Animal Shelter for Computer Mice on Thursday September 18, 2025 @09:17AM (#45289317)
Isn't it similar to fish vs fishes?
Re:Show HN: Veena Chromatic Tuner on Monday September 08, 2025 @07:16AM (#45166922)
This is a great answer. If I understood correctly: The feedback you give the user is different than a usual tuner in two ways: it is framed by the reference note, and is two-dimensional.

Setting up shop as self employed in the US

Moving to the US from Europe as software developer, with an ongoing contract with a customer abroad. What kind of professional help should I look for? I've seen that I need a CPA (Accountant) and I'm reading up on tax resources in Freelancer's Union web site.Should I try to use a web app such as TaxAct or should I make sure I speak with a human accountant, even if my set up, once ongoing, should...

Re:The worlds weirdest musical instrument on Tuesday May 06, 2025 @06:23AM (#43903467)
I recently watched her live, introducing to the Theremin "for families", with a pianist. It was ok but too verbose and dumbed down (probably not by her, by her hosts). I'd try to attend her shows for grown ups instead, even with kids.

This was a case where the novelty of the instrument stood in the way of the performance.

The foundations of Wolfram Language (Mathematica) are about transformations on symbolic expressions, at least conceptually.
Re:Introducing Our New Name on Monday October 14, 2024 @02:15AM (#41834707)
Name change solves a problem I was having just yesterday. And it is easy to use and spell in the tongue I was using it.

Thank you. I had missed that the grey icons are hyperlinks with interesting stories.
Podcast "The Rest is History" episode 355, I think.
Re:Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection on Sunday April 21, 2024 @03:49PM (#40108650)
The Android version worked very well when I installed it year ago. It was a great choice for someone who does not want to have addictive games installed in the phone, while at the same time enjoy the occasional brain teaser.
Re:Standard Ebooks on Tuesday January 02, 2024 @03:24AM (#38839387)
US Barnes & Noble can have a few meters of shelves with different versions of the Bible, and a buying guide. It is quite striking if you are not used to it.
Re:N3Logic on Thursday December 21, 2023 @04:28AM (#38718542)
I asked chatGPT and it hallucinated log:not when I asked how to represent negation in N3logic.
Re:N3Logic on Wednesday December 20, 2023 @07:42PM (#38715716)
This is Berners-Lee rule language without explicit negation. The syntax, with nested graphs of triplets, is neat. See also SparQL.
