Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026) on Sunday June 14, 2026 @07:38PM (#48534325)
I'm really interested in gamedev tooling and I'm working on a tool called PixelAid[0] right now. A lot of people are essentially discovering AI image gen as a way to make art for games, but AI is especially bad at pixel art right now. Color palettes, grid sizes, animation drift are some really big issues that basically make those things unusable. I wanted to take a non-AI approach to fix these things with some good ol' math and tools.

I'm trying to build more things around AI pixel art - honestly, I think it's crazy some people out there are charging money for things like this and seeing where I can help (and also just learn more about this stuff myself).

There are, though. Some planets and moons are poisonous, at least. Overall, the game to me is a lot like starbound, or a less-fulfilling Terreria.

Watsi, San Francisco

Watsi is a global crowdfunding platform that enables anyone to directly fund healthcare for people around the world.

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”
We’re a team of developers, designers, doctors, and marketers working at Watsi because we believe that everyone, everywhere deserves access to healthcare. We move fast, take risks, and come to work every day excited about building an organization that matters more than we do.

We’re looking for a full-stack developer to join our six-person team in San Francisco. The ideal candidate is an experienced, product-focused generalist who wants to use their skills to bring healthcare to the world. Some of the technologies we use: Rails, Backbone.js, SCSS, Postgres, Redis, Sidekiq, Heroku, RSpec, and Jasmine.

If you’re interested in learning more, please send whatever info you have (linkedin, github, personal site) to [email protected].

Re:Authy is joining Twilio on Tuesday February 24, 2015 @09:02AM (#9100526)
Interesting acquisition, glad to see authy as a service living in Twilio instead of just using it. Can't wait to see it in the portal. Make sure you read Jeff's post as well.

I got it for my PS4 and I think it controls great.

The only problem I do have is that because it lacks a manual, there is no tutorial for anything. It doesn't take many button guesses to figure out what they do, but it just throws you into the game. Took me about half an hour to realize you can run if you hold R1. But this is not a fault of the game's controls, just a lack of button layout by me.

Re:Segment is giving away free Watsi gift cards on Tuesday December 09, 2014 @05:08PM (#8726164)
Gift cards expire after 90 days, at which point the money on a gift card goes to our general fund for patients, so worst-case scenario, someone claims one of these and doesn't use it, the money will still go to patients' healthcare.

I was very surprised at the price, but with the ability to play online multiplayer now being a part of Playstation Plus, they can afford this. I was impressed by both conferences, but assuming Holiday season is November, I think the PS4 is looking really good.

Also, Kingdom Hearts 3. That alone kind of made my day.

To me, this is a much bigger issue than the possibility of always online. I can sign into my friends Xbox and we can play together, but I couldn't just let him borrow the game. And the fee can be up to full MSRP, meaning that you can't ever really sell your game because it will, by definition, cost someone else MORE than a new copy. I understand that PCs do something similar, but I don't buy PC games with the idea of sharing them with my friends, but I do with my console games. GameStop, gamefly, and others are in a real interesting position as to what they will do with the new Xbox One.

Would this affect a new repo I make if it's named after one I renamed before?
Re:Show HN: My seven minute workout timer evening project on Thursday May 16, 2013 @05:02PM (#5721119)
No! No, no, not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who works out in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.
Re:Algorithms: it's got what hopeless romantics crave on Tuesday May 14, 2013 @11:41PM (#5710037)
I think the use of these heuristics doesn't necessarily contribute to the success of these matches. Essentially, you get people who don't really believe they can be "matched," and instead use these sites as a way to meet new people. Then you have the people who desperately want to believe they work and work to make that "match" work out. Adding words like "algorithms" and "science" behind this process is nice as a virtual ice breaker (i.e. "Hey, you like Game of Thrones too? That's awesome.") but essentially, the people who end up in a relationship are the ones who can already see themselves being with whoever they're matched up with.

That isn't to say that any of this is bad. And these sites do a pretty great job at that ice breaker, but I think it's the anonymity that is really key here. Starting off with a small bit of information, and eventually learning more and more about a potential match. Let the social identity act as a means of verifying real people, I guess, but don't expose that. Let users do that for you. And in turn, it might make people find more interesting matches - people they like talking to before maybe even seeing them. Just some thoughts off the top of my head.
