Re:We Rebuilt the Linux MicroVM Stack on Apple Silicon on Friday August 21, 2026 @07:41AM (#49386640)
A suggestion to the author -- don't outsource your writing to AI, or, if you do, go over it with a fine-tooth comb and remove every trace of Claudisms from it.

I read the subtitle: "What it takes to boot the same microVMs on Apple's hypervisor, and the one capability Apple will not let you have." and immediately navigated away.

Oh boy: the AI-isms on this article are so annoying.
Re:Show HN: Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app on Thursday October 13, 2022 @11:46AM (#33192599)
Anyone have any thoughts on Craft[1] and how it compares to Obsidian as a note-taking tool? My primary work machine is a Mac (I also have an iPad and iPhone). I'm looking primarily for a note-taking app with support for images. I don't necessarily need the more "glamourous" publishing type features that craft has.

Things I like about the app:

* (Generally) good keyboard support

* Syncing (but I'm paying for it)

* Good native apps on mobile

Things that aren't so good

* Editing code blocks

* Is the ACM Professional Membership sufficient to benefit from the Pluralsight[1] (and Skillsoft[2]) courses? Or is the All-Access membership required?

* Do people feel the ACM All-Access Membership (Professional + unlimited access to ACM digital library) is worth the additional $75?

Re:INVALID URL: Shopify to lay off 10% (~1000) of staff on Tuesday July 26, 2022 @11:08AM (#32239403)
Key takeaways:

* Shopify cutting ~1000 workers: most of the layoffs will occur in recruiting, support and sales units

* First big layoffs the company has announced since Mr. Lütke started the company in 2006.

* Shopify’s shares fall 15% to about $31

* Tobi Lütke: "It’s now clear that bet (that surging e-commerce sales growth would last past the Covid-19 pandemic’s ebb) didn’t pay off... I got this wrong"

* Laid off workers to be offered 16 weeks of severance to the laid-off workers, plus one week for every year of service

Hey @JackWritesCode. We're eagerly waiting for the 1-year review you promised us when you uttered the legally binding words: "Sure :)" last year[0]

Because workers have more time to upskill in a recession, companies that offer services in this area (e.g. SIS systems, etc.) might also do well. From what I can recall, one of my former employers (https://moderncampus.com) has traditionally done well during an economic downturn.

I do try to submit the logs when I can. tbh, it takes a combination of (In/Out) text filters along with some navigation to trigger the failures. If I re-encounter, I will try to spend some time to reproduce.

You can find the last failure I submitted here[0].

From the PV man page (https://linux.die.net/man/1/pv)

^- is that a wisecrack hidden in an otherwise serious man page?

Re:New(ish) command line tools on Wednesday April 13, 2022 @07:45AM (#31013518)
Excuse my ignorance, but what does this command do?
Re:New(ish) command line tools on Wednesday April 13, 2022 @07:43AM (#31013508)
My personal go-to for intelligently tailing files is lnav (https://github.com/tstack/lnav) tho it has crashed a couple of times for me when applying a bunch of filters, etc.

Is anyone aware of any other comparable shell tool for tailing a set of logs?

Ask HN: Schema aware partial relational database copy with subset of records

I'm looking to create a partial copy of a massive MySQL relational database. The DB is too large to be able to replicate fully.I'm looking for a tool that would accept as inputs * a database * specification of relationships between the tables in the schema * a root set of records across one or more tables...and it would copy over the root records and all related records into another MySQL...

What I'd love for someone to share is the MVP Linux machine I can use to run PiHole... Starter Raspberry Pis (e.g. by Canakit) ... are >$150 CAD on amazon.ca which just seems so expensive.

A Guardian comic from the perspective of a person unemployed during the pandemic addressing the employers they applied to for jobs.
So a quick glance makes it seem fairly similar to Obsidian... as the docs note, it's built on top of VS Code vs Obsidian which is standalone...

What are some reasons Obsidian users would want to switch?
