One of the sources you provided has only one, clear, obvious definition: one that applies 99% of the time, and aligns with how they (and me, and I can assure you, every single reader of BBC.com) interprets the word.

The other source has practically the same definition listed as the top one, providing two alternatives, one of which is practically synonymous, and another showing an obscure alternative which is new to me and almost makes sense in the example sentence.

Yet they're loading the word.

Therefore sorry, but for me it's you who comes off as hateful. As in, unpleasant; dislikable [1]#2 :D

That's nice :)

I'm curious though - did you use tabs or spaces?

If you pointed a gun to my head, I'm pretty sure I could think of a reason why someone would want to use Tinder.

Yup, "Be Right Back", S2E1

And possibly another one, but that would be a spoiler

> You're not just saying that because the word happens to end in "butt" are you?

They're saying precisely that and they're 100% right, and it seems you're missing a lot of things.

It's a social network. Its only value is in it having people using it and coming back.

Just try and imagine any person in your IRL circles (who's not on HN) actually using a social network with butt in its name. I seriously can't believe you see no issue there whatsoever. A teenager. A young artist. A YouTuber. "Follow me on TikTok, Instagram, Scuttlebutt and Poopypants". I dare you to find a creator willing to say these words.

Or if you just hang out with smart, like-minded tech-savvy middle-ages people who see past these things, then great, we have a new "social network" for smart, like-minded tech-savvy middle-aged people.

Re:Scuttlebutt social network: a decentralised platform on Friday February 23, 2024 @06:03PM (#39487281)
When it's a DB layer, sure.

When it's a social network?

"Hey guys, have you seen Dave's new post on Poopypants?"

Re:Scuttlebutt social network: a decentralised platform on Friday February 23, 2024 @06:02PM (#39487264)
I wanted to hate on it, but I just downloaded the latest version and I see that after like 20 years, they finally realized that each tool window doesn't have to be a separate application.

Good for them, for once I might be able to try actually try it.

Someone at last, thank you!!
Re:Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @07:28PM (#39448780)
I don't get why people who are so paranoid about someone associating their Telegram handle with their phone number simply don't go and grab a burner SIM at Tesco.

I mean I'm all down with the idea of tech companies respecting our privacy. But here we are, complaining that corporations that are at least trying (and that are operating at a loss since their conception for our convenience) aren't giving us "Snowden hiding in Russia" level of security out of the box, for free, just because we deserve it. All while we could easily implement it ourselves for like $8 and with no online trace whatsoever.

It's like, Tails Linux exists, but FUCK GOOGLE for forcing me to Ctrl+Shift+Delete in Chrome if I want to erase a cookie. I'm so significant and certainly not a criminal, why do they hate me so much??

Re:"Wherever you get your podcasts" is a statement on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @09:30AM (#39288986)
If I follow a podcast, I follow that creator.

If I follow a YouTuber, I follow that person's channel on a particular, closed, privately-owned platform. If YouTube decides to kick them out, I no longer follow them.

Yesterday I actually learned about an app trying to solve that problem [1] through an absolutely bad-ass video response by one of its creators to a takedown notice from Google [2] (the mic-drop part starts at 3:29)

[1] https://grayjay.app/

[2] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ42f-tV_3w

For me as well, and I didn't even read the headline.
Pretty much this, end of thread.

I did not expect to read hantec on HN today. Enough internet and about time for a škopek I guess.

I mean, yes.

For desktop, Avalonia, hands down.

https://avaloniaui.net/

Open source, powered by Skia, backed by JetBrains, and quite battle-tested at this point for small to medium-sized apps. In theory perfectly capable for enterprise as well, since it's basically a spiritual successor to WPF, which has been an industry standard for about 15 years.

They're diving into mobile and WASM well, but that's more of a recent effort and I haven't tested that yet.

Isn't .NET Core pretty much what you're describing at this point?

> Let's say the French government decides that OpenAI must change something about their business practices if they want to continue operating in France. OpenAI says "nope", and blocks access to French users.

That's one possible outcome. (ETA: You DO have a point here, but...)

The other is, you know, something like every website explicitly telling me, via an annoying popup, how much they value my privacy. Also, me not being able to access half of US news sites to this day.

The last time EU raised their finger, every technology company (FAANG included) shat their pants.

And that was simpler times, times when a cookie stored in your temp folder without websites shouting they're about to do so, was somehow the biggest concern of an EU netizen. It almost seems ridiculous, compared to the damage AI could do (the extent of which which nobody really knows).

If I can download and install Discord on my PC, I would describe it as a "desktop app". We have the desktop, we have mobile, and we have the web.

The word "native" shouldn't even be in a user's vocabulary. And I believe it wasn't until Electron polluted the world with inefficient wrappers around a Chrome tab with a custom icon slapped on top.

Once we were living that nightmare, developers of apps aimed at power users, who actually bothered to create a good experience, started differentiating themselves by offering "native apps", as in, "we actually coded an app for your OS". And as the time went by, the Electron web app resellers adopted the term as well.

Right? One of the many things (and I mean this without any hate whatsoever) I simply can't and will never understand about the US. A bank account number is your mailbox for receiving money. How does that country even operate when they build those mailboxes underground?

One could argue that it seems strange to charge X for anything when free alternatives exist.

Ultimately, it is up to anyone to decide whether the "package looks pretty" and the proposed value seems worth it, or whether they want to keep on searching and/or try to build some GitHub repo.

Haha that's cool!

For me, it correctly guessed Inception from [hourglass clock], [a pair of wide open eyes], [zzzz]

Did anyone manage to make it guess Superbad?

While I see where you're coming from, they really aren't just usernames. It's not like I can log into your e-mail account by typing VoodooJuJu and pressing Enter.

Screenshots wouldn't be of much help. The frequency would need to be almost like a low-fps video recording in order to capture the buttons' pressed state. At that is assuming the state is visually distinct in the first place.

I understand that some GUIs sort of become "black boxes" while trying to abstract away the complexity, but I know at least one (Sublime Merge) that always shows you the low-level commands it's trying to run.
Re:An early look at VLC 4.0 on Friday February 26, 2021 @12:02PM (#26276969)
Don't worry about that, I'm almost sure that's a bug. It's the default, fallback "GUI" for the LibVLC engine. I've been using LibVLC in a .NET app I'm working on, and I've seen it appear a lot of times when I screwed something up on my side (and LibVLC probably "wasn't aware" of the UI widget in my app's window).

So THAT'S what all the humans at Google are up to, while their bots are busy locking legitimate user and developer accounts!
