Re:Ask HN: Losing motivation to work in the IT field, need advice on Saturday September 19, 2026 @12:39PM (#49767986)
If you architected your code in a consistent way and are good in reading and reviewing code; AI can definitely help you move much much faster than if you write the code yourself, so while the AI is working on your current prompt you can move your focus on the next thing.

I consider myself a fast coder, but there is no way I can code faster than AI. But my rule is that even if AI wrote the code I still review and own 100% the code.

Re:Ask HN: No Path from Techie to Management? on Friday August 21, 2026 @11:30AM (#49389643)
The main issue is that many managers are selfish, if you are a technical talent they prefer to keep you locked in the technical side because you make their life easier, you could state clearly your intentions for example: within the next three years I want to move from the technical side to the management side and define with your manager and future manager what should be done to achieve this goal making it clear that if it doesn’t happen you will be willing to seek other opportunities outside your company.

It is your company that should provide guidance to what you should do to achieve this goal, some companies might offer you a master or MBA.

Doing certificates and studying can help increase your knowledge and could be helpful if you seek such opportunity outside of your company but if you plan to stay in your current company it’s better to let them define what is needed so they don’t have excuses.

Read and review it!
Re:Ask HN: Having a child before career has taken off on Sunday July 19, 2026 @12:45PM (#48969638)
Based on personal experience, who ever tells you it is easy is lying to you.

Kids are amazing and you don’t realise it until you have your own, on the same time they require a lot of physical and mental energy especially if both parents work; so be prepared to lower your expectations, I don’t remember who said it but in life you can do your best in two things at most: work, family, social, sport just pick two, don’t expect to be able to do everything.

You will have some sleepless nights, sometimes your plans will drift, don’t fight it and be ready to be flexible, if you had a sleepless night the next day at work pick something easy, on good days do the complex work because you don’t know what will happen tomorrow.

You will have to orchestrate your life around things you cannot control such as when kids are ill and most importantly whenever possible to get or ask for help just do it don’t feel ashamed of asking for help.

Finally, if you plan to have a second kid, I suggest to avoid waiting too much, it’s better to have them with a two-three years distance so that once they are old enough you can focus on what you left behind when they were young and remember they grow so fast so make the most when you are with your kids personally I prefer spending time with kids rather than having an ordered house ;)

Re:Ask HN: I hate coding agents. Is this skill issue? on Monday July 13, 2026 @01:50PM (#48896244)
TDD advocates would be proud of you ;) differently from your approach I still prefer to make sure the model code is inline with my expectations and only then ask for unit tests, only exception is when I am dealing with a bug then the failing unit test is a MUST.
Re:Ask HN: I hate coding agents. Is this skill issue? on Monday July 13, 2026 @01:48PM (#48896207)
Yes, its like when you are chatting with somebody and due to the async process somehow you start chatting about two things in parallel (maybe it’s only me),

Anyhow, I think that you can keep in the flow as long as the successive prompts are still related to the major change if not then I guess you deserve a stop and pause before moving on with the next task.

Re:Ask HN: I hate coding agents. Is this skill issue? on Saturday July 11, 2026 @04:46PM (#48875694)
My process is becoming as follows:

1) I always start with a clean code base (ie. no uncommitted changes)

2) I have a text file called prompts in which I write my first prompt for my desired change, in the initial prompt I always explicitly ask to NOT generate unit tests.

3) Copy paste the prompt to the cli

4) While the LLM is working on my prompt I go back to my prompts file and start preparing the next prompts that will build on top of the previous one

5) Once the agent is done I review every single line of code and either manually fix what I don’t like or prompt minor changes until I reach my desired result.

6) commit locally the change

7) copy paste the next major prompt from my prompts file

8) Repeat steps 4-8 until I fully implement my major change

9) Once I have my major change I prompt for adding unit tests and related documentation

10) Once my unit tests are all green I execute additional manual tests if required, squash all local commits and push for pear review

Following these steps I can work fully focused and let me emphasise again on the fact that even if the majority of code is written by the LLM I still review and read every single line of code so that when LLM companies decide to fuck us or when shit happens in production I know where to look as if I wrote the code myself like the old days

All of this works for me because I know very well the programming language and the specific domain I am working in thanks to the past experience collected in past years before LLMs.

On a platform for manufacturers, currently focused on a warehouse management system, https://pragmatech.it
Of course, you might have the best product in the world, but if you are an a* then I will buy somewhere else even if that means pay more or not use the service at all.
Re:Ask HN: How Do You Relax? on Monday April 06, 2026 @11:58AM (#47662615)
I don’t understand why, some people have fun doing their job and feel joy when blogging about products they create and believe in, for me it’s a hubby.

Wish you joy and happiness in your live.

Re:Ask HN: How Do You Relax? on Sunday April 05, 2026 @06:36AM (#47648021)
It might sound strange, but the best relaxing time for me is that sometimes I go to the office on Saturday or Sunday, turn off email and phone and write a blog post or make a short video about our product.

Biggest discovery is that humans are much worse than expected, and are always rushing to the next big thing forgetting to enjoy the present.

Seriously shouldn’t the whole world slow a bit down and enjoy our lives a bit?

Re:Ask HN: How do you automate your release notes? on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @02:36AM (#46598233)
For me automating release notes is like recording an audio and play it each time you introduce your kid to somebody.

You worked hard you added all those new features and fixed several bugs and hopefully introduced no new ones, take the time and write the release notes yourself or with the team, make it a moment of celebration, read them and refine them (even with LLMs) but be proud of what you just accomplished.

For me writing release notes is a joy moment why should automate it?

Re:Ask HN: How Are You Handling Auth in 2026? on Thursday January 01, 2026 @01:32PM (#46456666)
The obvious answer would be use oauth and base it on one of the main providers such as Google, Microsoft or Meta.

However starting from last year, due to the fact that these companies are becoming too dominant and I don’t trust them anymore I started applying a philosophy of avoiding to depend on them as much as possible unless customers explicitly require to use their services, for this reason we opted to always have our own solution and if needed integrate it with 3rd party solutions, this way we are not slave to FAMGE companies and we have full control over our product, it’s a small drop in an ocean but at least I sleep with more inner peace knowing that I am still contributing to the distributed architecture of internet.

Sounds crazy, potentially less secure, and time consuming but still, I prefer this approach.

Microsoft already F** Us by buying GitHub, others by stealing accumulated knowledge of stackoverflow, and forcing everybody to be AI dependent because they poured billions in it… I am not letting it happen again.

We have always used apache as a reverse proxy and it has never been a problem from a performance point of view, performance issues has always been related to the database, business logic, network, disks and so on.

Using nginx might enhance a bit performance, but compared to other modules of the overall environment such performance gains are neglectable and unnoticeable for a normal user.

In our latest product I wanted to switch to nginx but I was surprised that for windows it is only in BETA version, and since our application MUST be deployable to both Windows and Linux environments we preferred a consistent software stack hence we stick on Apache.

The plan is to reconsider nginx once it officially supports windows, since no serious customer would accept a beta version for a production environment.

I hope time and good people/consumers will prove your theory wrong.
Re:Ask HN: Has the Gaza war affected the HN crowd? on Thursday September 11, 2025 @07:33PM (#45217188)
For you first question I didn’t have an answer, so I did some research and based on what I read, it seems a lot of expansion, land seizure and legalisation of unauthorised outposts in addition to new expansion plans for existing settlements.

For hostages it seems that neither side wants them to be released, hamas wants to keep them to bargain and Israel uses them to have a reason to continue bombing Gaza.

Any Palestinian government should have full authority on its land, people, resources and financies, I agree that the current one is full of corruption but it is also largely controlled by Israel, even their wages pass from Isreal, a government with no authority is no government.

As for the school curriculum, again I had no idea and I searched and I found that both sides are guilty: [A study titled “Israeli and Palestinian textbooks erase the other side, report finds” analyzed dozens of school books (Israeli and Palestinian) and found that a large proportion of Israeli books (75%) and Palestinian books (81%) describe the other side as “the enemy.” This suggests that portrayal of the “other” as adversarial is common]

Most of the 100K either had another nationality or left for human aid (injured people), many of gazans already left their homes in 1984 and lived as refugees in Gaza, I don’t think they want to leave a second time because leaving means no coming back, also why those people should leave their land? They should have the right to stay there.

Finally for the last comment, do you think there is a place to hide? How can you get food? Medicine? Money? I can’t imagine being put in such conditions!

Re:Ask HN: Has the Gaza war affected the HN crowd? on Thursday September 11, 2025 @01:30AM (#45208136)
Yes all recent wars, but the comment was on a question related to Gaza.

Still gaza war feels different, maybe because it’s almost streamed live on social media platforms by the directly impacted people?

I don’t agree with the statement that corporations are machines to absorb money, behind corporations there are people and people must have morale.

Re:Ask HN: Has the Gaza war affected the HN crowd? on Wednesday September 10, 2025 @07:03PM (#45205309)
Extremist groups in Israel existed since 1940s (before its establishment) or even before …

And the actions of Israel in the past 30 years, and affirmations from its leaders don’t seem to be moving toward the OSLO accords, otherwise why building all those settlements in the west-bank? It just doesn’t make sense.

anyway who cares about the past I am more interested in the future:

1) In your opinion how all this crisis could be solved?

2) If you had the misfortune of being born in Gaza, and obviously you cannot leave it, what would you do?

Re:Ask HN: Has the Gaza war affected the HN crowd? on Wednesday September 10, 2025 @06:23PM (#45204878)
I have the feeling you look at things from one side only, making one party as good and the other as evil, there are extremist groups in Israel too as there are in Palestine, each side made atrocities to the other, each side have people that really hate the other party.

Withdrawal from Gaza is very opinionated, some say it was to give Palestinians self rule as you say, many others see it as a tactical move making it an open air prison, and that Israel itself preferred that Hamas take over Gaza.

My only hope is that on both sides there are enough people that want to live in peace and prosperity with equal rights and care for each others regardless of their roots and don’t care if you call it Israel or Palestine or whatever.

Re:Ask HN: Has the Gaza war affected the HN crowd? on Wednesday September 10, 2025 @05:26PM (#45204015)
Don’t you think that what is happening will lead to a generation that hates their neighbours even more?

If I were in charge, I would create the circumstances that prevent poverty, create work, and encourage cooperation between both nations hoping that time will heal the hate and anger that both sides accumulated over the years, this requires wisdom and patience from the political party that is smart enough to understand that neither party can redeem the whole land for themselves.

But as long as each party refuses to accept the other, regardless if they say it publicly or not the hate will never end.

Re:Ask HN: Has the Gaza war affected the HN crowd? on Wednesday September 10, 2025 @05:03PM (#45203683)
Come on man, try to put yourself in others people shoes and have a bit of humanity otherwise the hate cycle will never end.

I never thought that people should be killed because of an election, today almost 50% of Gaza people are <18 which means they were not even born when the elections of 2006! are we saying that 1M are responsible for what is happening to them? Also, in the future the same argument could be used against the other party blaming them that they elected a far-right party, both parties should settle down and end this hate cycle once and for all.

And please we are in 2025 we are not in WWII anymore, if it happened to germany doesn’t justify making it happen again, we should learn from the mistakes of the past instead of repeating them.

Re:Ask HN: Has the Gaza war affected the HN crowd? on Wednesday September 10, 2025 @04:05PM (#45202876)
Personally it impacted me in a way that I have lost faith in humanity.

Everybody talks, but no body cares, no body takes serious actions. Kids, women, elderly, whole families are being killed for almost two years and no body gives a shit.

Millions of people trapped in a land and moved from north to south from south to north like animals, have you seen videos of starving people running in masses to get food from aids thrown from the air? I can’t beilieve such things are happening in 2025! Sometimes I think, what would I do if I was put under such circumstances? How much hate would I accumulate? What if something happens to my kids? What if I see my kids starving in front of me and I can do nothing about it?

Also big companies, they only care about money, ethics and morale do not exist, they only care about money money and more money.

Countries fighting for women rights in Iran and Saudi (which I agree with) but at the same time, those same countries don’t say anything about the killing of innocent people, pure hypocrites.

Re:Thoughts about latest meeting of CEOs with Trump on Saturday September 06, 2025 @03:27PM (#45152163)
Agree! I don’t understand how they convinced so many companies to move to the cloud, making them pay more than actually running physical hardware. If Azure, Google, AWS go down most of the internet will be down which is really the opposite of what the internet is supposed to be! Soon we will not be able to call it the World Wide Web anymore!

Cloud is needed for very specific scenarios such as:

1) You running a global service like instagram, amazon, netflix. 2) Your hardware demands have very high fluctuations.

Apart from that, many software solutions can be easily installed on prem, and as your business grows you can increase the compute power of your infrastructure.

Thoughts about latest meeting of CEOs with Trump

I am curious, what are your thoughts about the dinner between president Trump and the different tech CEOs?Personally I am worried that the whole tech sector seems to be owned by those gentlemen's and soon (if not already) we will all be consumers of their technology one way or another, unless you have billions in investment there is no way to compete.

Re:Ask HN: How to generate product docs E2E? on Sunday July 06, 2025 @03:30PM (#44483319)
In my experience, If you want to auto-generate your documentation then most likely is not useful, documentation should explain concepts, domain knowledge, architectural decisions and much more that you can’t have fit as a one-to-one mapping with your code.

Also, writing documentation is athat moment that makes you think about your software from a different perspective, often times I discovered and refactored my code during the process of writing down documentation.

We use Antora and VSC to write down our documentation.

Question was about old or outdated, total commander is old ;)

Don’t get me wrong, I love it! and I don’t think there is anything close to it.
