Re:Simple circuits can create complex behaviors on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:21PM (#50328168)
I thought I did read. Could you point out the thing I missed? It seems that priorities of Tilden's laws are very much a contrast to asimovs. But I've been wrong before. Help me understand what I missed. Thanks!
I'd love to see a books and youtube thing for metafilter too. It has a similarly good recommendation history for me.

He has an interesting take on the laws of robotics:

1 - A robot must protect its existence at all costs.

2 - A robot must obtain and maintain access to its own power source.

3 - A robot must continually search for better power sources.

"X is the useful part" I hate this claudism. But a good thing about recognizing these is that you can pretty much skip any youtuber that uses any claudish phrasing. But it's damn near everyone now a days using claude to write their scripts.

Re:Get Ready for Touch on Mac on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:15AM (#50299799)
That's true. Usually apple is more consistent with UX. I wonder what advantages they saw to voice over touch style of interaction.
Re:Get Ready for Touch on Mac on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @09:14PM (#50283252)
This is how it works with voice over on ios devices, and it’s pretty natural after you use it for awhile.
I haven't investigated it much, but I imagine that LLMs have made it easier for japanese culture products to release products in English language. Is industry in Japan taking advantage of nearly free translation for it's print products?

Did you implement bank sync for you quickbooks replacement?

Re:Tiny Little Office on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:56PM (#50108510)
After exploring it a bit more, I also found that there is no way to load a document that you ask the app to save to your browser IndexDB.

Wow. I think it's easy to replace search engines with LLMs (it basically has for me), but I never considered that "News" with a capital N - would be replaced by an LLM. Do you just ask it for news directly, or do you have it collate different sources?

Re:Tiny Little Office on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:57AM (#50103785)
My disagreement is about the usage of the word, not about whether marketers or politicians have used it for other purposes. Sure, using “democratize” to mean “make broadly accessible” has bleached its political force, but that sense has been attested since the late 1700s to the present. Prescriptively, you can argue it shouldn’t be used that way. Descriptively, it has been, for a long time.

Historically wrong. https://www.etymonline.com/word/democratize

> We teach the population at the cheapest possible rate; and the aim all the democratization (if we may use the word) of literature proposes to itself in this country, is to store the minds of the many, of the anonymous multitude, with a large portion of valuable, because practically useful, facts. [Meliora, vol. ii, no. 6, 1860]

Is there no way to open saved documents? Like it won't open a .csv, .txt or .ics file for example?
nobody is downloading this w/o a video showing how it works friend.
Re:Show HN: A simple to-do app for iPhone, Mac, and your agent on Saturday October 10, 2026 @11:28AM (#50033888)
This UI is a straight up copy of Things.
I understand if people use LLMs to help them write, but damn make the sentences yours. Please don't have the LLMs write the sentences for you. Use LLMs for outlining, brainstorming, critiquing, grammar, etc. But write your own sentences. This could have been a good article.
Re:Getting the most out of Opus 5.5 in Claude and Claude Code on Saturday October 03, 2026 @05:52PM (#49948157)
I do like Opus 4.6, but I think 5.5 on medium or low is a better value. I have to steer 4.6 more and build more scaffolding around the tasks. 5.5 just does what I ask. Visual spatial reasoning greatly improved in 5.5 as well.
Re:Tiny Brutalism on Friday October 02, 2026 @01:45PM (#49936333)
Steam has some helpful features for game buyers. I can buy the game without installing it, steam keeps my save data and allows it to easily move between computers, steam allows me to keep a library of games without having to manage them on disk, and I only have to share payment info with one processor. I think these features are some of the main reasons people use app stores.
Re:The AI Race Just Got Awkward on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @12:26PM (#49910985)
What are you thoughts on it's performance compared to 4.6?
> Well, that’s because that’s not how it went.

Oh, you mean the one where OpenAI deliberately disabled the safety protcols? Where the point of the experiment was to see if it could break out of it's container? Yeah, how you describe it isn't how it went either.

Like a power cord? or a network connection? You don't use those already? Also when people talk about LLM escaping - where exactly would an LLM escape to? Cancún? Ridiculous.

I'd love to hear more about your setup. I have a single GB10 and am thinking about adding an additional one.

It also blocks my ability to talk about Emily Dickinson in other languages/scripts. Apparently, the poem: "Because I could not stop for Death" is too dangerous.
archive.is is more hostile than twitter now. It wants me to scan a QR code with my phone to prove I'm a real person.
