Re:Traffic Fatalities Are a Choice on Monday May 12, 2025 @01:11PM (#43965271)
People over 70 years old in the Netherlands have 2.8 times the fatality rate of drivers under 60 years old. [1] So the road design is not the cure-all that this article suggests since the elderly are still causing fatalities even with the improved road design. It's disappointing that age was not cited as one of the main causes of accidents.

Yes, we can and should improve the design of the roads. However, we also need to improve the driving skills of the young and elderly.

Billions of "savings" for Medicare, but the costs will be passed on to private health insurance by paying higher prices to make up for the "savings" that were given to Medicare.
"It was her whole attitude and her whole disposition that disturbed me," the judge said in interviews afterwards.

I wish I could read the transcript of what the 15-year-old girl said. I suspect it was some really disrespectful stuff, which doesn't justify the judge's actions, but does add context to why he did it.

Thank you for the background. For those with the knee-jerk reaction without the full story, this case was based on a whistleblower providing allegations to the FBI.

The whistleblower provided evidence of a contract between the professor and a Chinese university. The FBI investigation collaborated that evidence, including fifteen trips to China in three years. That is why this case was brought to trial.

He was not exonerated on the false statements charge. Instead, the appeals court found it was immaterial by a 2-1 decision.

This professor got a doctorate from Princeton and did a postdoc at Berkeley. He knew the rules for working on NSF and DOE grants. He didn't deserve all the happened to him, but he did lie and cover-up his connections with a Chinese university.

Re:Bananas Don't Taste Like They Used To. Here's Why on Friday July 19, 2024 @04:20PM (#41010691)
The Freakonomics podcast [1] did a whole episode on this topic. It's one of the more fascinating episodes in my opinion, and I can't eat a banana now without thinking about the Gros Michel.

As noted in the article: crime is down with 72% of the law enforcement agencies reporting. No mention of which agencies have not reported yet (Chicago, Baltimore, other inner city high-crime areas?)

From the FBI, the actual numbers will not be released: "The number of incidents will be publicly released when 80 percent participation levels are met."

This feels like a heavily biased article in an election year.

It seems there is a lot of overlap in the Mulesoft and Tableau Prep data integration tools that Salesforce already owns.

I wonder if there is more overlap with the Salesforce data quality, data catalog (metadata) and data governance tools?

Re:What Happened to San Francisco, Really? on Monday October 16, 2023 @08:10PM (#37908442)
As a non-resident who has enjoyed going to tech conferences in SF in the past, taking along my family so they could explore the city while I was at the conference, this article did nothing to change my opinion of SF. There is no way in hell I would go to SF for a conference or take my family there.

Wow, they still named the mission "Luna 25" even though it's 47 years after "Luna 24".
So if it is already illegal [1] for anyone under 18 years of age to possess a handgun in Michigan, what laws do you think the next generation are going to pass?

Not layoff-specific, but here are questions [1] you should be asking your manager at every 1:1 meeting:

How is your week going?

What are some of your priorities for this week?

What challenges have you been having?

How can I help you?

What feedback do you have for me?

You will get more information from the answers to these questions than if you were to directly ask your manager "Am I expendable in the next layoff?".

I believe your information is outdated. "Castle doctrine" laws have been enacted in nearly every state. [1] In states with these laws, there is no "duty to retreat" from your home or any place where you can legally be. It is unlikely that a prosecutor would even bring charges under most conditions. The conditions are detailed on the Wikipedia page.

Re:Ask HN: What to do to be healthy when old? on Monday October 03, 2022 @12:43PM (#33070013)
Peter Attia [1] has a great podcast about many aging/healthspan issues. I listen to the free version but there is also a paid version of the podcast with more info.

The book Lifespan [2] from David Sinclair is also a fantastic source. Finally, if you can wade through some of the questionable statements and claims, the book The Longevity Paradox [3] from Steven Gundry does have some useful info.

Re:Is it time to stop taking Vitamin D? on Monday August 22, 2022 @10:42PM (#32559960)
A big bottle of vitamin D softgels costs me around $5 dollars per year at Costco. Is it worth wasting $5 on the chance that this study is wrong? Yes, I'll keep taking my vitamin D.
AWS re:Invent was awesome last year but I'm not planning to go to any conferences this year. I'm really tired of the mask police and a few encounters with Karens last year really soured the experience for me. I'll wait until we are all either mask-free or wearing the scarlet letter on our chest. I really hope the social environment this year is not a repeat of the last two years with lockdowns, masking and vaccine booster mandates. As you stated, if there is no social element to the conference, then it's better to watch at home.
Re:Fake Dog for Home Security on Wednesday July 27, 2022 @04:20PM (#32256336)
In most of the United States, that is no longer true. The law previously required a "duty to retreat" if the home owner encountered a potentially violent assailant. However, most states now have "Castle Doctrine" laws which shift the burden of proof from the defense to the prosecutor. [0]

Most prosecutors will not charge a home owner due to this change in laws. Civil liability is separate factor, but criminal charges are rare.

If they want to reproduce, don't they have to search outside their tribe for a sperm/egg donor and possibly surrogate? So at least 50% or more of their reproductive health comes from outside the tribe?

1) She was detained upon entry to Russia at the main airport in Moscow (Sheremetyevo International Airport) when they searched her bags and found marijuana. (vape cartridges) If she was detained at a backwater airport or hotel room, then the suspicion of the drugs being planted in her bag might hold more weight, but instead it appears she was legitimately caught red-handed transporting drugs.

2) She was very vocal in 2020 about not playing the national anthem at WNBA games. Now that she's been imprisoned in a foreign country she wants patriotism and American values to fight for her release?
