I did not see that or a TOS as part of sign up

If the HN communities behavior is to point to a TOS I didn’t agree to at sign up, I’ll go ahead and logout and stay away

That’s some bait n switch, end run around norms, patronizer enabling, dark pattern nonsense.

Re:Wi-Fi may be coming soon to a lamppost near you on Saturday May 07, 2022 @12:49PM (#31296261)
You should consider moving to a rural area and staying away from technology altogether. Having access to information seems to be making you insane via anxiety.

It’s nothing but upside for you; less WiFi radiation and conspiracy addled inner monologue.

Re:Material Design 3 on Saturday May 07, 2022 @12:39PM (#31296151)
It would be so much nicer if services just hosted APIs, provided a key, and users could code their own interface, share them as Docker containers (for desktop web anyway).

I don’t need a Gmail or Lyft UX as they see it, I need to CRUD records in their database for them to distribute accordingly.

Re:Efficiency is the enemy? (2021) on Friday May 06, 2022 @05:59PM (#31289995)
Right, the old supply and demand; a heavily accepted model drilled into us.

It’s not the only viable one to the species.

Given automation and first hand experience building analytics systems for VCs and investors; they’re not that much more capable. They’re humans at the same edge of knowledge as any grad of a decent university, of which there are millions.

Teaching “stay in your lane” tacitly props up apathy and disbelief in the proles.

If the roles are both equally necessary, why does the CEO make so much more than the secretary?

The CEOs entire enterprise is due to others. If anything explicitly highlighting that undermines the myth they’re the experts.

Both of your models rely on the CEO delegating to focus on the right state change for the business, so I’m not sure why you create two scenarios with squishy ideas of a CEO being efficient or slacking. Some CEOs have casual demeanors, others addiction to Adderall energy; neither is slacking if that’s just the vibe they need to “make it better.”

You seem to be circling the core meme it’s the CEOs job to improve the company and wrapping it up in subjective modals for doing so. Not sure how this refutes the article.

What does your policing add to the conversation? Unrelated syntax and semantics is not related to US housing
The EU Apple to US orange comparison you mean? What’s the EU have to do with US home values?
They could lobby their elected officials to spend more on staff, and facilities.

But you’re right, you’ve put me off on the whole idea. Good effort. There’s no way around artificial scarcity.

Don’t forget to mention they still have full health coverage in the EU.

It’s not possible to afford housing or robust healthcare in the US.

Keep in mind there’s no rule we have to tolerate either.

Imagine being a teenager in the US, having just seen how essential workers are treated, knowing in all likelihood your future is an “essential worker”.

Then watch Congress scapegoat Facebook.

The same was true with religion. There was no wonder, just gospel.

Again we’ve made a truism that we’re doing for the greater good by setting ourselves aside for the hustle. Yet no science gives anyone omniscience; we follow along because what else to do, but the high minded goals we follow along with do not have to be rockets to nowhere.

Notice how all the rich people do little real work to provide material things they need? They externalize the necessary effort required for their survival, despite being mortals who are expected to support themselves, they gossip and babble and produce little that truly supports them.

The public needs to let go of the Protestant work ethic, the mountain man struggle and become a better negotiator. The grind keeps them from imagining in detail for themselves.

Apples and oranges

A fully functional web app in a Docker image is what wg-ui is.

Web companies could probably just provide API keys for customers at this point and abandon UX teams.

Re:Tailscale raises $100M on Thursday May 05, 2022 @04:26PM (#31278017)
If agency to make a thing must be purchased the long term viability of the thing is suspect. The work becomes about payments not the thing.

If it’s a real human problem, humans will solve it. If it’s instigated due to someone with coins in their pocket to mesmerize lizard brains, it’s a synthetic solution that will vanish with the synthetic driver of the work; payments.

Just because paying for things is common throughout history does not mean it’s necessary or the best choice long term; see Netflix propping up payment flows churning out crap. It means meat based tape recorders simply LARP the past.

Re:GitHub will require 2FA by the end of 2023 on Thursday May 05, 2022 @02:11PM (#31276712)
Funny story, I did store my Github codes in 1pwd

Years go by, I need a code, they don’t work. Github could do nothing but tell me to start a new account.

Same old story; Github does not exist for you. It exists to make its workers and owners money. Whether it works or damages you is irrelevant to them.

The future has no obligation to the past. Don’t expect the codes to work if they change something that deprecates the old system they used.

There are Go and Python based packages for diagrams as well:

https://diagrams.mingrammer.com/ https://github.com/blushft/go-diagrams

I wonder what social media discourse would look like if it wasn’t full of ad spam, lamenting inequality, freedom to be oneself without old politicians being mad, and environment concerns for young people.

It’s not social media at all; it’s the reality they live in which happens to include social media. It’s plain truth; the majority don’t give a fuck about their future.

It’s presumed needlessly complicated is necessary to make the line go up; behind the scenes, they say, mathmagical forces exist that only the chosen few truly understand. You see everything is really a graph of infinite brand names, and the flow of value is determined by the taxonomy of brand ownership.

Many a study have been attempted to quantify what character qualities or technologies boost productivity. Their model becomes so nebulous no reasonable conclusions can be made.

But now of course computers learning helps us untangle that web and low and behold the same economic winners emerged! Wow!

They have to show on investor calls the line went up.

We’re propping up the wealth of a generation that has no idea how anything works, but they got there first so of course they are now the de facto deciders of our agency.

Re:Tailscale raises $100M on Wednesday May 04, 2022 @11:10AM (#31261583)
If they can do it it’s not impossible (they’re just people after all).

With an open source implementation out there, anyone can do it merely pulling a Docker container, and without paying Tailscale.

Regardless I manage a dozen users with no issue using Embarks container; once they’re setup I touch nothing.

Paying people is not working with people; it’s working with a specific group. Open source is working with people.

Re:Tailscale raises $100M on Wednesday May 04, 2022 @10:15AM (#31260737)
It’s a basic web UX over a built in Linux kernel feature

There are Docker containerized apps that manage Wireguard too

Maybe contribute to one and fret less about behavior of VC funded business and wondering if they’re actually respecting your privacy to accomplish finance goals

Re:Pop culture has become an oligopoly on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @11:33PM (#31256444)
Alice neutered the tech patent race, the pivot to copyrightable content creation and rent seeking via essentially lifetime copyright as everyone alive will be dead, began; streaming services for everyone.

What do you expect from technocrats who grew up on dystopian capitalist cyberpunk? One touch purchases was a capitalist brand itself; Uncle Pauly G has NFT bucks for cyber punks that ship!

Re:Pop culture has become an oligopoly on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @10:37PM (#31256138)
They were as the economic benefit of the taxation system of the day and chance of being young when the rest of the world was a crater are mathematically easy to see.

Any suggestion reality owes eternal deference for some greater good is laughable on its face.

Re:Pop culture has become an oligopoly on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @10:32PM (#31256102)
“families like”

Gates’ father’s legacy is founding partner of an internationally known law firm, though I believe he stepped aside before it achieved global status.

Bezos conveniently had 25 relatives and family friends that could invest 50,000.

Musk family and African gem mine abuses are easy to source online.

IBM wanted nothing to do with transistor computers that might cannibalize their vacuum tube computer business until government funded the research; forcing progress through government action is pretty well established in history, just saying.

Austerity is for those with integrity.

The benefits of collective effort are pretty clear; why agency is locked up unless a billionaire can profit further is bizarre.

Relativity implies people without healthcare or universal healthcare are making an uninformed choice without experience.

The philosophy of our system is moral relativism and sunk cost fallacy, obfuscated by government funded propaganda. IMO.

Re:Pop culture has become an oligopoly on Tuesday May 03, 2022 @06:51PM (#31254606)
True that; there’s a government paper trail detailing the transfer of military propaganda research to university marketing and advertising programs.

Check out Hyman Rickover, a proponent of a nuclear Navy that pushed members of Congress to vote mothball 10 years of thorium reactor research for uranium reactors so they had weapons material.

I laugh at the notion we have a free market since the basis of our system is 50-70 year old back room deals that boosted families like Gates, Musk, Andreesen, Bezos.

There’s zero science that explains how they’re ahead of anyone else in skill and intelligence. Plenty to suggest typical old fashion political propaganda and corruption.

Traditional values are gossip based pseudoscience. The majority will never dig deeper, so it works, but what’s more they’ll never understand the nuance so why bother? Stick with gossip.
Re:Oil companies scramble to find workers despite boom on Saturday April 30, 2022 @07:23PM (#31220457)
Adam Smith only mentions markets in the context of a free labor market.

It’s the only supply and demand metric he ever describes.

It was generalized into everything is a market, with jargon cottage industry springing up around everything; market is a hammer, and we pound nails.

Re:Is everything falling apart? on Friday April 29, 2022 @05:00PM (#31210536)
The average person actually exists. They should have reality based skills and knowledge in self sufficiency.

Low effort consumerism, freedom to, takes freedom from others.

Freedom to be yourself cannot cost others freedom from the same. We’re a caste system that uses concepts like net worth as the measure instead of religious sigils and totems.

Freedom to sit at home on a laptop takes freedom from others in measurable ways; making less for work laptoppers want to avoid but need is kind of a joke system.

Remember millions of real people are being pinched harder and harder. That’s never ended well in human history. You can’t simply point at a philosophy and demand well understood biology to deal with it forever.

What’s hyperbolic is a defense squishy meat bags very much like passed squishy meat bags aren’t just larping the same old. That somehow magically it’s all different.

Keeping stats in the right place just makes truism out of political bias.

Re:Is everything falling apart? on Friday April 29, 2022 @03:17PM (#31209525)
I don’t just use opinion polls, but the sources for the explanations are opinion polls.

Top responses to “why not get your license” point to availability of public transit, ride share, viability of walking, or biking, all of which are not an option for folks beyond the suburban fringe.

Re:Is everything falling apart? on Friday April 29, 2022 @01:39PM (#31208368)
The conversations I’m in are not simply focused on brain trauma; the resource cost of hauling around teams and gear is substantial. Conversations at homes on “Main Street” are more frequently referring to multiple reasons for a decision, not reducing it to one or another.

Same goes for traditions like coin and paper money; they consume a lot of stuff and energy. That’s become a repeated talking point when polling people why they are interested in crypto, which was unexpected.

The data models I’m asked to build include more than just opinion polls though, as it’s felt by the folks I work with opinions are biased by media, anxiety of going against the grain, and frankly, lack of imagination and considering alternatives on the part of the public.

See a quote commonly attributed to Adam Smith about extreme division of labor resulting in humans dumber than animals; there’s no exploration across contexts; a farmer is a farmer and that’s it. Proper Anglo tradition of staying in lanes dictated by aristocracy.

Generational churn won’t end reality itself, or be so dramatic we stop using English. It will curve agency away from old forms of agency to new. A lot of people freak out about that.
