Re:Why I Stopped Arguing with People on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @05:10PM (#48753156)
I usually ask people straight at that point whether they want solutions for me or if they just want me to listen with empathically. Depends on the person how I bring this though, but it tends to work.

Check the podcast “Fall of Civilizations”, this is very true. This advanced civilization is actually dying.

I recently found this, might help someone here. Genius solution. https://sslip.io/
You just put words to something I felt, but could not entirely find the words for. Also, war does not solve war.
Re:The skill of the future is not 'AI', but 'Focus' on Monday April 21, 2025 @04:12AM (#43749476)
Yes and no. Although I’m a proponent of the “put the pain where it belongs” way of doing things, sometimes a more nuanced way of doing things is needed. This usually involves more communication instead of less. You can always give them feedback that (may) make them reconsider their approach of just stating things and not asking questions. Small effort for you, but you might change someone’s way of asking things, both for the good of you and them. If that doesn’t work, you can always go back to ignoring.

Haha, I genuinely laughed, thanks for this gem.
Re:Proxmox Announces Proxmox Datacenter Manager on Thursday December 19, 2024 @04:07PM (#42465694)
Really interesting, thanks for letting us know. There hasn't been a lot of new about this (not that I've been looking that long), is there a place to follow up on these developments, a roadmap of sorts?

Edit: Misread, thought this was about the "normal" Proxmox web UI. Any plans to make that Rust based?

Re:Software Disenchantment on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @03:53AM (#37995957)
Let’s hope this doesn’t get taken up by a sentient AI in the future :-)
I worked at a very locked down environment without possibility of installing other tools and I found that the openssl command was always available. $ openssl s_client -connect <IP>:<PORT>

I'm aware of most of the problems with the behaviour of Linus in the past, but reading over this post on the mailing list actually comes over pretty civilized. No name calling, no big drama (compared to the past), just giving some clear boundaries to someone who is not doing things like they should be done. As someone said here, it comes of a bit infantile to expect special treatment for your project, IMO.

And Twitter. Albeit in a slightly different way.

I found these two episodes of the “Fall of civilizations” podcast to be very informative about the Sumerians and Assyrians. It’s episode 8[1] and 13[2], definitely worth a listen in my opinion.

Maybe you know already, but you can use an IRC relay to act as pseudo client, connect to that and then read back on messages. You’ll have to find a place to host it though. For example, “The Lounge”.

Edit: typo

I suggest you check out the demoscene if you haven’t. This is “Memories” from the Revision competition: https://youtu.be/Imquk_3oFf4

For some reason, this chills me to the bone. Being forced to fight your own countrymen. Has this been done more in history?

Re:Xrdp: An open source RDP server on Friday June 12, 2020 @02:31AM (#23496621)
I used this as a solution for remote workers in my company. Set up rdp on Windows with 24-bit color and select "LAN" connectivity improves sluggishnes. It takes a bit of tinkering to get the xRDP config working well, but when it works, it's really smooth. I used X over RDP. Make sure no users are locally logged in before logging in via RDP.

Re:Get Your DNA Sequenced Anonymously on Friday September 20, 2019 @02:18AM (#21023748)
Not related to the article, but what are the benefits of having your genome sequenced? What can you currently get out of it?
Re:Ask HN: Books about industrial control systems on Thursday September 05, 2019 @02:38PM (#20889562)
Not books, but Honeywell, Foxboro are two other manufacterers.
Can you supply some more information on this?
Re:cd –, a shell feature I didn't know about on Monday February 11, 2019 @01:30PM (#19136878)
Here are some more useful shell bits. - When prefixing a command with a space, it is not logged in the history. - !$ represents the argument of the previous command. $_ should also work.
Re:Ask HN: How can I get better at bash? on Tuesday June 27, 2017 @08:47AM (#14644853)
Do some puzzles(wargames). For example: http://overthewire.org/wargames/

It will make you search for several special use cases and will give you some experience with the command line. Basically, you SSH into a box, solve a problem and the solution for that problem is the password for the next SSH connection for the next problem.

This one is for beginners: http://overthewire.org/wargames/bandit/

Re:Passing On: 100 years ago, the last passenger pigeon died on Monday September 22, 2014 @01:27AM (#8349387)
Even if cloned, these birds won't come back as a whole. The instinct and habits of the original passenger pigeons are gone. It's like cloning a mammoth from a elephant, only to see it live like an elephant.
