Do these new processors mean anything for those of us who need to run x86 VMs or is Apple Silicon still a no-go?

MacBook announcements are the opposite of slow news days. Consumer tech outlets are literally scrambling to cover every aspect of these things because there is so much interest.

Edge is my browser of choice. Chromium base, great features (collections, vertical tabs), performant, and allows me to automatically clear all history and caches every time I close the browser.

> The assumption that I need help buying a book is the biggest insult...

Insult is too strong a word. Like many here, I think something like this should be opt-in. But I also think the same about "smart recommendations" that try to auto-complete a word I'm typing or add something to my calendar based on recent emails.

I dislike them all and want them all to be opt-in. I think it's predatory by design -- but why anyone would be "insulted" is beyond me.

Another popular thing people like to do is map something like <k-j> or <j-j> to Escape. This can be easily done in your vimrc.

While the <Alt-[a-z]> mapping is great and enabled by default, it does have the side effect of logging an extra key press based on the [a-z].

Brilliant! If this was all I learned today, it would not be a wasted day. Thank you.

I just read the review. The specific gripes they had are: (1) subpar battery life, (2) middling performance compared to others with the same CPU/RAM configuration, (3) loud fan noise akin to a gaming laptop, and (4) uncomfortably high temperatures on load.

Could you please share the exact screen measurements? I purchased one but strongly prefer matte screens so I’ll be trying to look for a matte screen protector that fits.

Somehow this is the first I’m hearing of this, and yet I have never hit buy so quick.

Even if, heaven forbid, this company is no longer around in five years when I need new parts, just the ability to upgrade RAM, SSD, etc is so valuable.

This is also the behaviour of the mobile site on iOS. I don't know what the mobile app is like but it sounds like it could just be a webview to the mobile site.
Taking ELI5 to another level!
You can. It just doesn’t seem as clever to say “‘noun’ verbs”. It doesn’t have the property where the term is an example of itself.
Some practical advice on how this can be put to use from Barbara Oakley: https://youtu.be/vd2dtkMINIw
Does it use any programming language in particular?

I enjoyed these over several lunch breaks last year. Recommend it for both beginning and experienced developers/CSers. It’s casual and highly approachable.

Not necessarily perverse but the irony is not lost on me. It’s the Joja-playthrough, where you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
Re:Docker Desktop for Mac (Apple Silicon) on Friday April 16, 2021 @02:16AM (#26830198)
I’m just dreaming out loud here but I would love for the iPad to allow for a developer workflow similar to Fedora Silverblue. Perhaps not the layered OS images but the containerized sandboxes (toolbox) and the App Store instead of Flathub.
I suspect I’d need something more mature and performant but I appreciate the recommendation!
I have only two nitpicks with my M1 Mac: (1) it's not a good fit for virtualization (whether docker or VMs) -- but this limitation is well-known, and (2) the only time I see slowdowns is occasionally when opening a new tab in Safari -- even when almost nothing else is running. The second one also happened on my Intel Mac, just a bummer that the issue hasn't magically gone away.

Beyond that, I wouldn't change a thing about this machine. Very easy to recommend!
