Not true. He bought his first stock at 11 by pooling money with his sister, and sold after it dropped 30% then bounced back up to a profit. The stock was "Cities Service" which became Citgo later.

I've read this years ago in "The Warren Buffett Portfolio", but couldn't find a definitive source for this response quickly, so here (https://www.fool.com/how-to-invest/2014/03/15/the-very-first...) is the reference I used to recount the details above.

Re:The pneumatic tube mail system in New York City on Tuesday October 17, 2023 @08:41PM (#37923519)
Depending on the distance I would expect the cat to have succumbed during the trip. If the inside of the canister was not open to the outside air it probably wouldn't have enough oxygen and have suffocated during the trip. If it was open, would the amount of pressure in the tubes be fatal to a cat?

If the cat did survive, I wouldn't want to be the attendant who opened the canister.

The 2013 NOVA episode "Earth From Space"[1] gives a really good explanation of how these conveyor belt currents work, and has some beautiful computer generated graphics that depict the microcurrents in the oceans that they're able to build because of the data collection from satellites. I re-watch it every couple years, and this story prompted me to start watching it again just now.

This is correct, it attempts to check for notarization each time it is launched. In the case where there is no network connection most apps have the notarization "stapled" to the app meaning it actually carries the successful notarization authorization attached to the binary. This may short circuit checking for notarization with Apple's servers but I don't know if that happens for sure.
After initially revoking discounts in 2017 then reversing course[0], they are removing discounts once again for popular open source projects[1].

FYI we didn't have an issue open on the topic of reproducible builds until now[0]. While it has been discussed internally, we haven't focused on it. We will have to assess the work involved but will put it on our backlog.

One great resource for those interested in contributing to Mozilla, is mikeconley's live coding sessions[0], which are cataloged here[1]. These can be used to help understand internals.

"audit2allow -a" or "audit2why" will tell you what the reason for a denial is and potentially how to fix it. Pretty sure it will tell you to run setsebool to allow httpd_can_network_connect in this instance.

Donating programming books?

I am in the process of moving, and have a number of programming books that are either course materials or for languages I don't frequent much any longer. What do people here do with technical books?Would love to give them to a local library but I called and they won't even accept book donations. Is there an non-profit organization that teaches kids programming that I should consider?

This was described in depth in a recent Nova program called "The Nuclear Option"[1][2]. In it they referenced multiple other more safe methods than the most common type of reactors in use today which use technology designed decades ago. Sodium based reactors were new to me entirely and appear much more safe than existing designs, also capable of using depleted uranium.

Note: I'm not a nuke supporter just a curious guy.

I don't know how many of you have worked in or around salt water, but you can't have anything besides stainless steel even exposed to salt air without it corroding. Pretty unlikely a toughbook will last more than a few months in this environment.

Even a pelican case being opened daily will mean corrosive salt will get on the components, but its got more of a chance because it does seal tightly.

Has no one seen the parallels and thinly veiled references to Anthony Bourdain's TV shows here? In fact its referenced directly but in quotes with the "no reservations" quip. Bourdain was frequently criticized for the fact that in extremely poor areas of the world he threw money around and caused unintended consequences for the locals. Take for instance his Haiti visit after the earthquake, when he tried to buy a meal for starving kids but then couldn't feed all of them when the word got out.
