Re:Linux Kernel Hotpatch for All on Saturday October 31, 2026 @01:37PM (#50318191)
Honestly, I hadn't seen klp-build. If your on SLE, I think this is a decent place to be.

Many people don't realize they can be live patching the kernel themselves.. if nothing else, hopefully this will raise awareness and get folks using tools that exist, or building on this for their specific needs.

My long term goal here, is an open service you can run for ay distro.

Re:Linux Kernel Hotpatch for All on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:59PM (#50317874)
CVE's are coming at a rapid pace and Linux provides the tooling to live patch the kernel yourself, across your fleet, and sometimes faster than the vendor. This tooling will be built to support all Linux distributions, and will turn into an open service to make this easier for everyone

The SmartOS release changelog for reference: https://us-central.manta.mnx.io/Joyent_Dev/public/SmartOS/sm...
Re:SmartOS on Wednesday January 21, 2026 @11:53AM (#46708221)
SmartOS is the core operating system for Triton datacenter -- https://www.tritondatacenter.com; Triton is the orchestration of SmartOS compute nodes.

Code + issues are active under https://github.com/TritonDataCenter (smartos-live, illumos-joyent, triton, etc.), and docs are at https://docs.smartos.org/.

SmartOS is released every two weeks, and Triton is released every 8 weeks -- see https://www.tritondatacenter.com/downloads

And Triton object storage will have S3 support in the next release!

Re:OpenIndiana: Community-Driven Illumos Distribution on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @03:22PM (#44892662)
While we do still ship KVM on SmartOS, we've moved development over to bhyve - https://docs.smartos.org/bhyve/

using our package manager pkgsrc [https://pkgsrc.smartos.org/], you can install the MTA of your choice too!

SmartOS is being actively developed since the aquisition from Joyent[1] in April 2022.

We've released a new version every two weeks post acquisition, and are continuing to develop and invest.

We also hold office hours events roughly every two weeks on Discord[2], and would love for you to stop by and ask any questions, or just listen along!

Re:VMware Kills Off 56 Products on Thursday January 18, 2024 @05:16PM (#39048632)
We're definitely seeing an uptick in interest for Triton Datacenter[1] from vSphere users looking for alternatives.

Aside from Triton, there's a quite a bit of interest in Proxmox and XCP-ng in the community.

While alternatives are gaining popularity, they certainly do not have the same ecosystem that VMware users are accustomed to. Organizations are going to have to pony up, or make concessions.

Over here at https://mnx.io we fit that description, and we do our best to keep our IP space clean.

Re:Introduction to Immutable Linux Systems on Monday September 18, 2023 @03:07PM (#37560543)
Our team from Triton DataCenter & SmartOS[1] is also working on an immutable Linux distribution[2] based on Debian + ZFS + LXC.

Currently this is supported on Triton DataCenter only, but our internal roadmap has us building a standalone version similar to how folks use SmartOS standalone.

The choice doesn't have to be solely on-prem OR cloud. We're seeing a hybrid approach often as a first step. More predictable, fixed workloads can move back on-prem for cost-efficiency, while keeping elastic workloads in the cloud for flexibility.

The key to success is having the right on-prem solution to help bring both teams together while driving costs down. Our solution at Triton Datacenter (https://tritondatacenter.com) has helped various enterprises tackle this issue by providing a public cloud-like experience on-prem.

Re:Linode rebranded as Akamai’s cloud computing services on Wednesday February 15, 2023 @05:29PM (#34811726)
That’s a great experience with Linode.. We’re certainly expanding our options and with our recent acquisition of Joyent’s Triton DataCenter it’s also 100% open source — maybe one day we get to talk again! Thanks for the feedback too.

I do understand.. and sometimes cheap is what you want. When you want something else -- like customer service, this is where mnx.io shines. I would consider mnx.io to be a boutique cloud provider, prioritize quality/reliability and customer service, allowing us to build close relationships with our customers. As a boutique provider, we know most of our customers by name and focus on providing the resources necessary to ensure reliable, long-term sustainability.
Re:Linode rebranded as Akamai’s cloud computing services on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @10:37PM (#34799799)
At MNX, we manage your infrastructure at your existing provider or ours (mnx.io) and provide 24x7 monitoring and response. Our customers usually have 10+ servers, and pricing starts at ~$2500/month.

https://mnx.io and would be happy to have you! We're a small team with great support -- since 2012.
Re:Is OpenStack fighting a lost battle? on Thursday October 20, 2022 @05:43PM (#33281214)
We went down the Openstack path long ago.. but ended up choosing Triton DataCenter. The simplicity in operational support is just amazing. We’ve since acquired the commercial support business from Joyent this year for Triton.

Triton is much simpler to operate, manage and support - and we’ve never looked back!

Re:AWS doesn't make sense for scientific computing on Friday October 07, 2022 @08:38PM (#33128715)
As you've seen, we're open source -- https://github.com/tritondatacenter. There are tons of repos.. Mostly Nodejs and some golang/rust!
Re:AWS doesn't make sense for scientific computing on Friday October 07, 2022 @04:25PM (#33126490)
I really like this description of how baremetal infrastructure should work, and this is where I think (shameless self promotion) Triton DataCenter[1] plays really well today on-prem.

PXE booted lightweight compute nodes with a robust API, including operator portal, user portal, and cli.

Keep an eye out for the work we are doing with Triton Linux + K8s. Very lightweight Triton Linux compute node + baremetal k8s deployments on Triton.

Re:How to pay your rent with your open source project (2020) on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @10:04AM (#32579610)
Triton DataCenter[1] is open source[2], and has commercial revenue in excess of $1M ARR. We were fortunate to acquire this product from Joyent earlier this year[3], and are now well on our way to the next revenue target.

Triton was built on the backs of giants -- so a slightly different scenario than most.. But it is clear that customers will pay for open source products, and you can more than pay your rent one day!

MNX Solutions (SmartOS/Triton DataCenter) | Senior Backend Developer | Monroe, MI or Remote (US Preferred) | Full time | $150k+ | 100% paid benefits

MNX has recently acquired Triton DataCenter[1] and commercial support business from Joyent[2], and we are working on building the next generation of the platform.

Take a look at the GitHub repo for an idea of what we're up to: https://github.com/tritondatacenter.

Ideally you'd be very experienced with Node.js to support the existing code base, and ready to explore Rust for new features.

https://mnx.io -- We recently acquired Joyent Triton DataCenter[0,1,2] and commercial business, and are expanding our datacenter footprint this year.

Triton is open source[3], so you can run it in your own facility, at home, and our Public Cloud with the same experience.

We are in the process of building this team. This is one of the core hires for the product. With the transition, we brought on 3 existing team members from Joyent, and will be adding another 2-4 folks over the coming months.
