I learned diaphragmatic breathing pretty early in childhood. Later, I noticed that whenever I got the hiccups, taking a deep belly breath early on, usually within the first two or three hiccups, would make them stop. Over time, I learned to do this unconsciously, so nowadays it's basically a reflex as soon as a hiccup starts. Since then, I haven't really had any hiccups longer than one contraction.
Re:Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h? on Thursday September 10, 2026 @10:47AM (#49644677)
Same for me in firefox. Even with the website closed I get a popup of "dmitrybrant.com controls your cursor" from time to time or if i hover over the top of the URL bar. Visiting the website again and explicitely pressing Esc, then closing the page worked to get rid of the message.
Re:Visualizing Binary Files on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @12:18PM (#49436522)
I always liked the 3D visualization in Veles[0]. It's very intuitive to make out structured ASCII or other non-compressed sections in binary data.

Re:Japanese Woodblock Print Search on Sunday February 22, 2026 @05:52AM (#47110010)
I took a class at his workshop in Tokyo and highly recommend the experience. So much thought and detail goes into preparing the wood blocks and even into "just" printing them.

If it's about intrusion detection of packaged goods lentils, beans or rice are very useful [0]. Cheap but great tamper detection.

Re:No elephants: Breakthroughs in image generation on Tuesday April 08, 2025 @09:15AM (#43621447)
These images are still created with the old model. The share link states "Made with the old version of image generation. New images coming soon." below the first image.

Re:Amateur Telescope Making Main Page on Thursday March 13, 2025 @09:30AM (#43353139)
There is a very detailed video documentation [0] about telescope building techniques, featuring insights from John Dobson, the inventor of the Dobsonian telescope mentioned on the page.

I would say this applies to more than just kids, this is the case for almost everyone.
Re:The Apple Watch as an Ammeter on Thursday September 12, 2024 @04:01AM (#41518566)
That's because Phyphox is financially backed by multiple public bodys of the German governement, mostly the RWTH Aachen and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as pointed out on the landing page [0].

I love the concept of moving walkways on large airports and always wondered why there are non with multiple speeds like this one. Is it a security aspect?

There is however an accelerating one at YYZ in Toronto [0].

My guess is that in this case the first 4 listed are main contributors (in whatever way: authors, funding, ...) , while the following are alphabetically sorted.
It's more people see prices dropping hence their money increase in relative value so they save up more instead of spending it.
Re:What happened in this GPT-3 conversation? on Wednesday August 09, 2023 @06:18AM (#37060655)
For me it generated a random title like "Translate to French", "Summarize in 4 words" or "Rewrite in short time." for the chat.

Re:Grid World by Alexander Miller on Thursday April 06, 2023 @04:26AM (#35465752)
Beautiful article, both in text and in visuals.

> Then my grid-vision exploded outwards from this center, enveloping everything, and I dreamed that the grid was the understructure to not just my own memories but to the world. I think we project grids outwards onto the world from within ourselves, shining their structure from our minds.

This paragraph instantly let me think of the theory of Lattice QCD [0] where both space and time get discretised in a lattice to be able to simulate and make predictions on processes happening on the subatomic level.

In the CES video [0] they are stating it's MEMS.

The two founders have indian sounding names [0] at least, so it might be the case that this is what they are going for.
