That really does stand out. There simply has to be something wrong with their JS numbers.

That puzzle is optional, and definitely the 'hard' way to get past that challenge
Do you guys still work with a predominantly Perl stack?
He's impressed at the caliber of Oracle's sales team since they can actually sell Oracle products. Frankly, I agree and would like to know what kind of jedi mind tricks those guys use on their customers.
Sarcasm? On my HN?
It's meant to be. No different from an "app" showcasing whether you should or should not have bought apple stock in 2004.
I'm an Oz fanboy and this is as close to objectively wrong as any subjective value judgment can get. Even the best of Oz is barely as good as the worst of the Wire - and Oz just got progressively worse as the seasons went on.
Which flamewar are you referring to?
I personally do not avoid women, but I do deny them my essence

Suits and ties are a step in the right direction, but I think what many of us would really like to see are non-gendered company uniforms along with well defined personal style guidelines (hair, makeup, et al)

The direct respondent can't downvote you. You were downvoted and flagged by multiple other users.

> You redefine what having power over someone means.

If anything, you're the one operating with a non-standard definition of 'power'.

This is some of the most ridiculous phrasing I've ever come across.

Not remotely. Just look at any of the recent Fox News harassment scandals, or literally anything involving the current POTUS.

Re:I'm a creep. I'm sorry on Saturday July 01, 2017 @10:31PM (#14680514)
This is an interesting blend of rigid paranoia and moralistic finger wagging.

If he were truly sorry he would retreat to a mountain lair to live out the rest of his days as a monastic hermit. Clearly the fact that he still has a keyboard to type on proves his insincerity. /s
Re:NYPD is canceling its Palantir contract on Saturday July 01, 2017 @04:57AM (#14676163)
100%. I suspect the original statement is actually laden with a fair amount of bias : Palantir unequivocally does have an ML strategy given that they're selling data analysis in 2017. It's literally unthinkable that they don't.

Whether that strategy is well reasoned and sophisticated is a completely different matter - but to imply that said strategy doesn't even exist is deeply misleading / straight up wrong.

Re:NYPD is canceling its Palantir contract on Saturday July 01, 2017 @04:48AM (#14676124)
Yeah, frankly I agree. There are reasons to criticize Palantir, but including Java in their stack isn't one of them.

> I can assure you it probably has the worst overconfident brogrammer culture

Everyone I know at Palantir has at one point or another mentioned to me (boasted about?) how difficult it is to get a job at Palantir. Sample size < 5, but I'm starting to think this isn't a coincidence.

It's far more widespread in both those industries. It gets reported on every now and then, but literally no-one is surprised so those stories never get traction. It's expected, plain and simple.
Fair point, which I suspect will eventually lead to all major tech companies radically scaling back their investment in Europe. The cost of doing business was already high, now it's prohibitive and tyrannical.
My point is simply that none of that should come as a surprise. There is an element of community here, but this forum first and foremost serves a business function - and is moderated accordingly.
HN is first and foremost a promotional and growth tool for Y Combinator, and only secondarily a discussion forum for technology enthusiasts. However, HN's branding has been so successful that the public perception of HN / news.yc is the complete inverse.
> Do you think Facebook has no servers in Germany?

They might have some leased servers, but afaik none of their custom built data centers are located there. Compared to abandoning a bespoke facility, packing up and moving out of a server farm is little more than a hassle.

http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/the-facebook-data-center-...

I don't follow your reasoning. Please explain how either WWI, WWII or the cold war were caused by limitations on free speech in Europe (which in this context largely means western Europe).
Germany wields a ton of power within the EU, so it's reasonable to assume that if FB decides this is worth a fight they have to take into account that the fight could end up expanding beyond just Germany.

Even so, it's debatable how much actual authority the entirety of the EU has in this matter. They're not guaranteed cooperation via US courts and public institutions. They could threaten to wholesale block Facebook (or [insert other tech property here]), but I'm not sure that's realistic.

All in all I suspect we'll soon find out whether or not the EU is in fact a complete paper tiger : if they lose against Google & Facebook, they'll be unmasked as weak chest thumpers.

The only thing left to argue about is the question of scale.

That is almost certainly an incorrect analysis

The pentesting team at SEI-CERT cares about it.

> You're advocating for people to shoot for average, I'm suggesting to not settle.

From my perspective, I'm advocating that people don't inadvertently shoot themselves in the foot. They might not yet be qualified to work at Matasano or [insert top tier security shop here] : not everyone is.

Assuming someone isn't (yet) qualified to work with their dream employer, what do you suggest they do? "Don't settle" in that scenario sounds a lot like "be unemployed". I'm straight up saying it's better to build up skills at a job - even if that job isn't their endgame.

> HR wall? You're applying at the wrong places

This elitism is not helpful. There are finite employers in the world, and many of them do screen based on keywords. That's reality. Applicants who are entering the job market might not always have the luxury of disregarding n% (where n most likely > 75) of their potential employers based on stuff like "oh well any real company wouldn't screen my resume..."
