Re:Ask HN: Where do you find reliable information on diet? on Thursday January 13, 2022 @03:40PM (#29926528)
There is only 1 book you need, my friend: https://pedietbook.com/

Ted Naiman (the author) is a practicing medical doctor, and there are loads of podcasts of him discussing his protein-to-energy ratio approach to dieting.

You should maybe look into distributing this on itch.io (http://itch.io), which handles hosting, promotion, and pricing for you.
Re:An iOS Developer on React Native on Thursday September 10, 2015 @07:12PM (#10201132)
Do they not have MVC in iOS land? This isn't solely a React benefit, most every JS framework has it.

Regardless, excellent post!

Interesting...but could it be that Go is a super generic term? It's surprising that Go has more jobs than Python, for example:

Ask HN: Node.js vs. Go – which tech stack has higher freelance demand?

I'm looking to start freelancing as a full-stack web developer, but before going out to find leads I want to get to know a particular tech stack very well. On the front-end side of things, I hear Angular is in very high demand, and React is also worth looking into. However, I'm more conflicted over choice of back-end tech. It seems like there's plenty of demand for node.js skills, but at the...

Someone at work writes a lot of Python for doing this already - this is a great idea.
Hmm, that is very wise. I've never thought about things that way.

My motivation for projects has always been kinda screwy. On the one hand, I want to make an income on my side projects in order to someday move away from my rather boring job. On the other hand, I want to make fun and personal things like games, that aren't necessarily things that people would pay for. Most of the project ideas in my list reflect this split of motivation.

Wow, thanks for the insight. :)

Ask HN: Does anyone else have a hard time coming up with ideas for projects?

I work on boring enterprise software for my day job, and in my free time I try really hard to come up with project ideas that are manageable, completable, inspiring, and entertaining if not useful. But no matter how hard I try, I always end up brainstorming a bunch of ideas, then having to toss them out because of infeasibility, or because the idea already exists in some form and thus wouldn't...

Neat idea, reminds me of Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble.

You know, I read Hacker News less and less precisely because the posts are so damn negative. For those debating whether Notch is good or bad, I suggest reading every article from programming in the 21st century.[1]

This is how I learned Vim, so as far as I know it's the best resource out there.

You want to cure Facebook addiction?

Then delete your Facebook! I did it a year ago and I've never looked back.

Re:The Time Suck Economy on Saturday January 12, 2013 @04:23PM (#5048934)
By Drew's standards, Hacker News is yet another time suck. I don't mean to be incendiary, but it's debatable whether knowledge of Aaron Swartz's death has any actionable impact on my life.

I do agree with his thoughts on smartphones. While some smartphone apps are genuinely useful (e.g. workout apps, weather widgets, your smartphone's camera), there is a whole class of apps out there that facilitate mindless consumption. Every mobile game and social media app falls into this category.

Going off on a tangent, I haven't played a single, good mobile game (i.e. one that isn't a mindless time waster). There isn't a single mobile game in existence that naturally ties in with the hardware, the way that trading Pokemon was a natural fit for the Game Boy. I really wish there were these types of experiences on smartphones, because Pokemon was a significant slice of culture.

Ask HN: I live in NYC. How should I go about finding an internship?

I'm a CS major in my third year. I'm familiar with Python, C++, C, and JavaScript, though I don't have much of a GitHub to show for it. I'm open to and capable of picking up new languages. Since I normally live in NYC and since NYC is a tech hub, I figure I should look for a software development internship in NYC.But I'm kinda lost as to how I should go about looking for an internship. So I...

What would you say to a college student who's just starting out?
Re:Ask HN: Where should I study abroad? on Monday October 22, 2012 @05:16PM (#4685590)
Not at all! I've lived in the same state for my entire life, and I'm open to suggestions from those of you that are more well-traveled. :)

Ask HN: Where should I study abroad?

I'm in the third year of my undergrad CS degree, and it's only recently occurred to me that I should study abroad while I have the opportunity. I'm a native English speaker and I understand 90% of Mandarin Chinese conversations, though my Chinese speaking skills have withered away. I'm open to learning an entirely new language. Where do you think I should go?

Why not Google Calendar?
Re:Best Open Python Books on Sunday August 26, 2012 @07:16PM (#4436624)
I would disagree. I personally used Dive Into Python to learn Python. If you know programming, Dive Into Python is a great Python primer. Besides, reading is useless. You want to write code as soon as possible.

Paul McCartney does programming? Woah.

Nothing beats the Breaking Bad Cooking Meth Soundtrack.
